Can they just gray out "feel" when it comes to kolschs? I mean, it's a kolsch.

Anywho, this deserves a much higher rating than 84. I understand that it's not true to form, but what from Rogue is? Frankly, it's a great pour for a late summer day sitting on the back porch. I speak from experience.

Looks like a very light lager, tastes like a club soda. Sorry Rogue.

750ml into a solo cup.

A: Clear straw/honey with about 1/2" of white head that recedes quickly. Retention & lacing are pretty poor.

S: Mild, bready Kolsch-like notes. There is a saccharine component that I suppose reads a bit like honey.

T: Cereal maltiness makes up most of the palate. The mid-palate features a minimal but detectable hop note. The honey is subtle but well-defined through the finish.

M: Carb is moderate, body is relatively light. Just a hint of sugary/syrupiness. Altogether pretty refreshing.

O: I like that Rogue put 'Kolsch' before 'honey' here. This brew drinks like a quality Kolsch with a touch of honey, as promised.

Served in nonic. Poured a lightly hazy medium yellow with about 1/4 inch of white head that had good retention and lacing.

The aroma had a low grain profile, with a notable sweet aspect taking the front. Pretty similar on the tongue, low-to-medium graininess, very soft hops, and more sweetness than is typical for the style.

The body was fuller than I prefer for the style, and was a bit sticky. It was very smooth and even though. Drinkability was decent, although I couldn't see drinking 2 in a row. Overall, a nice enough brew, nothing particularly outstanding, but solid enough to try if you see it.

Rogue Farms Honey Kolsch brewed by Rogue Ales, with an ABV of 5.90% This brew pours out a nice light amber color with a small white head. The smell is rich with sweetness. You also pick up on some grains and malts, in the smell. The taste is sweet like honey, with some nice grains and malts. The taste is light. The mouthfeel is smooth and full of flavor, but light. Rogue Ales did a nice job with this one. Rogue Farms Honey Kolsch, has a nice balance to it, there is nothing overpowering in this brew. This brew is real nice and crisp . You really don't pick up on the 5.9% ABV. I like how this brew is different from most brews on the market. Overall I'm giving Rogue Farms Honey Kolsch 4.25 out of 5. I would buy this brew again.

As part of the recent self-sustain/”grow your own” movement throughout the United States, Rogue Ales has recently released a cropping of beers called “Rogue Farms” , centered around selections that they created from scratch – literally. Perhaps the most decorated of the group so far has been their “7 Hop IPA” with the “Honey Kolsch” coming in a close second. The most striking thing about this beer is the bottle which (as I’m sure you can notice in the picture above) is bright yellow and certainly a stark contrast to the usual brown or green fare. So how did it rate? What kind of “buzz” did I get from it?

Appearance – 87: Upon first pour a half-inch thick foam head was created which slowly bubbled off, leaving behind a ring of foam around the glass with constant carbonation. A hazy pale golden color, when held to the light it accentuates the sugary texture.

Aroma – 94: This. Smells. Delicious. Obviously I was expecting a sweeter scent as the beer is infused with Rogue Hopyard and Wild Flower honey, but I wasn’t expecting quite that level of barley and hops. Most accurately described as sweet and crisp, and exceptionally clean.

Body & Texture – 86: Akin to most beers put forth by Rogue, “Honey Kolsch” has a mere 10 ingredients, but the pairing of them provides a complexity that is surprising to the tongue. The brewery’s “Farm Dare” and “Risk” malts were used to create this concoction, which sits quite light and playfully on the palate. The honey is the flavor that remains with you the most from the onset.

Taste – 87: Concentrating purely upon first impressions, initial sips provide a subtle balance between the honey and malts packed into the beer. The wheat is merely an afterthought so it seems, but the most noticeable takeaway that I had was how extremely light the Kolsch was. Sure, the ABV is a mere 5.9%, but how easy it was to sip on was striking. This would have received a slightly higher grade if the remaining ingredients other than honey and malts had made an appearance, but very smooth and delightful.

Overall – 88.6 (Great): Something has to be said for breweries that pay attention to every little detail going into their beer – in this genre, quality is everything. To that end, the Honey Kolsch was impressive – the honey complimented the malts and yeast to create an extremely easy to drink beer that would find a home in my fridge in the spring and summer. There was little to no “sting” in terms of taste, but an additional strong ingredient would have really pushed this over the top.
