I usually travel to Oregon once a year. Whenever I'm near Newport, I go to Brewer's on the Bay. Rogue is my favorite American brewery and what better place to drink their products than at the source?

I imagine that if I started a brewery it would look like this: cobbled together. This isn't a fancy, all-built-at-once place like some other operations. Rogue has expanded inside this warehouse piece by piece and it sure shows. But Rogue's operation shows you don't need fancy equipment to brew some of the best beer in America.

The restaurant/taproom is upstairs. (Watch for forklifts as you walk through the brewery!) The most impressive sight is the line of taps. Rogue brews about 20 beers and they have almost all of them on tap here. Their samplers are four 4 oz. glasses. You pick which four you want. I wouldn't recommend trying all their brews at once since most are above-average in alcohol content. I think all their beers are great.

Their food is nothing spectacular. Just above average. But visit Rogue for the beer, not the food. The service is usually good, and the staff know a lot about the beers and brewing. Jeff has been there for the past few years. He not only waits tables, but also gives the tours!

Smoking is allowed but I've rarely seen people lighting up. (You gotta love the West Coast.)

They have a giftshop beneath the restaurant that also sells many of their beers. Their specials are usually very tempting. (Like 12 22 oz. Chocolate Stouts for $25.)

Highly recommended.

Enjoyed my visit at Rogue. Tried a lot of beers, but the taproom is not very inviting with a weird setup. Good selection of their beers.

Not overly thrilled. I live here, and Rogue has always been the Icon for breweries on the coast. Well they have sure fallen under the "It's good enough for the Coast" philosophy.

Although the beer is genuinely unique and interesting, the food fare and restaurant ambiance leaves much to be desired. My family and I were seated downstairs in what I would describe as overflow seating for lunch as we had two small children with us. Tables from some picnic area, red and white checkered tablecloths cut and pieced together, no view of the brewery operations although given enough thought, it could be. The view of the harbor was great but the seagull excrement on the windows not only made you not want to look out but ruined the eating experience. The areas under the tables were collection areas for dropped food and the scraps wiped from the tabletops and seating areas. The kids lived their grilled cheese sandwich and naked cheeseburger (kind of hard to screw those up) and the free frisbee, but my buttermilk oysters were obviously frozen pre-breaded concoctions thrown into a deep fryer and cooked beyond done. They were little more than deep fried batter with oyster flavor. To their credit, they comp-ed the meal. The grilled ruben sandwich was reportedly mediocre.

My Irish Lager was a little too DMS, canned corn for my tastes although it would have probably been better had it been below 55 degrees when served. The Mead was excellent, however.

Low scores are not for the beer, but for the experience and poor food. It is the Pacific Northwest for crying out loud!

Go for the Beer, but in my opinion; find another place for lunch.

This was the brewery that got me interested in beer as a complex and flavorful beverage rather than simply the drink of choice among buzz seeking frat boys. I have since expanded my horizons to other breweries in other states, but I still find myself coming back to Rogue.
