Reviewed on 8/30/2011. Brewed-on date of “mid-August 2011”, poured into a snifter.

Nice golden color, well-formed head of medium-fine bubbles last down to the bottom of the glass. Yeast gives a pleasant, light rustic funk that is well balanced with fruity notes from the US and NZ hops.

Tastes pretty much like a solid saison--yeasty spice and fruity notes highlighted by the citrusy hops. Very pleasant and reminiscent of some of New Glarus’s excellent wheat-based offerings.

Great beer, and the alcohol is well hidden at 7% abv. None of the flavors are overpowering, so it would be quite easy (too easy!) to enjoy several of these.

Bottle bought in Japan, poured into a goblet.

A: Quite light colored, large fizzy head.

S: Bread, banana, lemon, sour citrus, weird but almost a smoked sausage smell.

T: Funky... starts off with a banana and sour citrus, the weird smoked sausage is still present in the taste, finish is a nice combination of citrus and bready malts.

M: Highly carbonated but the alcohol is also present.

O: Interesting.. not really a saison that I am used to but I like the funkiness. Don't really know what to make of the smoked sausage..

The pour is a hazy yellow color with a tall white head. Nose of floral hops, yeast, and bread. A touch of biscuit sweetness, light spices and fruit esters, maybe some straw. The flavor is lightly sweet with bread and biscuit malt. Some fruity esters, yeast, and light spices. Light bodied, crisp, and enjoyable.

a - clear yellow body with thin white head

s - smells like straight hay and subtle malts behind that

t - grass, lemon, raw jalapenos with no heat, funky saison yeast, slightly alcoholic, pale malts

m - thin but very carbonated

o - not my kind of saison. earthy but so overpowered by this grassy taste.

A. Light colour as one would expect. Not a great head, and fairly poor retention.

S. Not bad hoppy smell. Citrus, piney notes, but not huge. I don't get the yeast or malt I may hope for in this style.

T. Really quite bitter without any hop complexity. Finishes very dry, far too dry in my opinion, this also not bringing out the best of the hops. Unfortunately I can't get past this to any other flavour profiles.

M. Pretty standard, except for the dry bitter finish, which in my opinion in unpleasant.

O. I personally wouldn't get this again and couldn't recommend it. This beer alone proving this statement I read recently incorrect "Shiga Kogen mostly brews traditional British style ales with distinct taste and superior quality". Neither British, nor superior.

The only thing I would ad is that this might improve with a little time. The bottle I had was very fresh.
