Pours a deep, rich black with half an inch of mocha head. Head faded fairly quickly into a medium collar and heavy wisps. Aroma is heavily roasted malt with tons of spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice), leather, wet earth and brown sugar/molasses. Taste is wet earth and cinnamon up front, allspice and a molasses sweet malt, dark chocolate, slightly piney. A chalky mouthfeel with a medium body and low carb.

High cognac flavor and feel stands high, dancing on the dry toasted porter base. But around all that alcohol swirls a plethora of complexity- fruit, dry malt, toast, and spice that all rise and fall at each sip.
Dark brown and firmly hazed, everything about the beer's appearance screams "porter". A dense column of foam pulls from the beer's body with a somewhat arid and loosely-knit texture. The beer's relatively long lasting retention simmers into broken creme as the beer settles down, leaving light lacing in its wake.
Bold spicy alcohols pierce the nose with those deep and fortified wine notes. Just underneath is a toasty, dry cocoa, and woodish char note. Woven together with threads of burnt toffee, an aura of campfire and burnt fruit waft about.
Dry malt flavors capture elements of over-cooked caramel burnt toast, smoldering embers, coffee and bitter chocolate. As its dry taste prances along the taste buds, they become saturated by the strong and spicy flavor of boozy cognac. The slim malt sweetness brings out the fruity taste of both ale and barrel with a notion of burnt grapes, currants, charred berries, cherries and earthen savory dates.
Medium-full on the palate, its otherwise smooth or rich texture is absorbed by burnt ash texture for dryness and grain-derived astringency that keeps the palate lightened. Alcohol spice pangs at the mouth with prickling and numbing effect; finishing with lingering cognac heat.
It seems that the barrel and booze amplifies the beer's roasty dryness. And likewise, the rough burnt ale flavors give the cognac a boost. But the beer comes together rather well- just so long as you have forgivences for sheer cognac flavor, heat and strength.
