Pours a dark brown espresso colour, nice tan head. Has a slight red tinge. Lacing is lovely; head revives nicely with a swill. But could have stuck around better.

Smells coffee. Spicy and dark with loads of roasty bitterness. Burnt sugar caramel, astringent pepper, notes of grains of paradise. Very piquant. Quite roasty, a bit heavy-seeming. Needs more sweetness.

Taste is roasty as well, developing more bitterness on the mid. Decent coffee belt, touch of spice but nice and smoothed out from start to finish. If anything it kind of tastes weak and lacking on the finish. Again could maybe use more sweetness/malt, sort of has all the roasty characters and mercifully they don't overpower, but actually just feels a little mild instead of overpowering. There's a theoretical happy medium there, and I feel the missing ingredient is just more malt.

Still, body is smooth, fairly full, doesn't have too much heat but still feels a bit heavy alcohol-wise.

Nice, but strangely subdued.

Brought back from Anchorage and cellared for a year, served at cellar temp in a snifter. Appearance is black, and pours a big, foamy head.
Smell is iced coffee and oak.
Taste is chocolaty, a decent punch of coffee, modest acidity, and fairly oaky, cherries and a little coconut.
Mouthfeel is soft, light and slippery. The oatmeal really shines.
Drinkability is pretty good. The body really helps, and the taste is pretty good, although it had a little to much oak I think.

Pours a dark brown, Extremely dark tan colored head of about half a finger. Head fades quickly and leaves no lacing behind.

Aroma is bitter black coffee. Some roasted, almost burnt, malt. Some licorice, smoke and earthy hops.

Taste follows the aroma. Dark coffee, maybe not quite as bitter as the aroma. Heavily roast malt and some earthy/peaty hop notes. Smoke, black licorice, and mild burnt toast.

Medium mouth feel with very low carbonation. Dry and bitter on the aftertaste.

This is a decent coffee stout but not particularly outstanding in any way. Could use slightly less bitterness and maybe a boost in some of the background aromas/flavors.

Pours an opaque very dark brown with dense creamy light brown head. A few thin rings down the glass. Smell: rich dark roast coffee, earthy, toffee, cocoa, mild plum-y fruit sweetness in back. Taste: unsweet chocolate, caramel, dark fruit note, then big roast with burnt edges. Fading into graininess, some tannin-y bitterness. Might be a little drier than the original, still nice.

Buddy Doops brought this one out for beer night a while back. Cool to see how this version turned out.

From a 750 into a snifter
Oatmeal stout with coffee and fermented in oak

APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a two finger, medium looking, creamy, light mocha head with good retention. Black body with minimal carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a thick foam cap and clings to the sides of the glass.

SMELL: Lots of coffee and sweet cream initially, with roasted notes and chocolate as well. Pretty nice.

TASTE: Lots of coffee and roasted flavors up front. A bit metallic through the middle and into a big and lingering finish of sweet cream, stale coffee, bitterness and light roasted chocolate. This is a bit stale and metallic compared to the nose.

PALATE: Medium body and slightly higher levels of carbonation. A bit creamy on the palate, goes down okay and finishes slightly mouth coating. A bit too light for the style perhaps, and a touch too carbonated.

OVERALL: This is a nice beer, but not as well executed as I remember the original Beer Geek Breakfast. A bit metallic in the flavor and the carbonation is a little too active for the style, but still an enjoyable brew. Thanks again for sharing Doops!

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours pitch black with a 1/8" light brown head that dissipates to patches and a ring around the glass, leaving light lacing. Aroma is coffee forward with dark toasted malt and light cocoa. Flavor is toasted malt with moderate char, boiled coffee, hints of lactose. Finishes with light grassy hops, charred coffee and hops, long residual bitter aftertaste. Excellent creamy medium body I expect from oatmeal stouts and delivered nicely by this one. A great tasting coffee oatmal stout; I think the flavor is somewhat more intense than the Mikkeller brewed Beer Geek Breakfast, but the creamy body really seems to have a way of balancing and blending the flavors, which is true here. I found this had somewhat stronger flavor and a much better body than its breakfast cousin. Nice.
