330ml bottle - mmmmmm...Mikkeller creamsicle...or is it?

This beer pours a clear, pale golden yellow colour, with one chubby-ass finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and somewhat creamy dirty white head, which leaves a bit of approaching thunderstorm cloud lace around the glass as it very lazily subsides.

It smells of musty oranges, grainy and bready pale malt, slightly sour grapes (the fruit, not me), a touch of good ol' Euro gasohol, and some leafy, grassy, and herbal green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy pilsner malt, still stale and kind of unappealing orange essences, white wine lees, ethereal petrol notes, and more leafy, herbal, and floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is rather overwrought via its palate-bashing frothiness, the body medium-light in weight, and not particularly smooth. It finishes fairly dry, the malt shedding any hopes of sweetness, while the yeast and hops circle in for the kill.

Yeah, this is just another ill-advised attempt to emulate another brewing culture's ethos, by filtering it through your own. If there was a 'Belgian Pilsner' style, this one could be plopped right down in the middle of it - that's not to say it's a respectable version of anything, however, as the bubbles, to quote the master, are burning my tongue.

Brief impressions due to a less than ideal review environment:

A: Head is 1.5 inches. White colour. Fluffy and foamy. Soft looking. Good retention - about 7 minutes.

Body is a translucent yellow of average vibrance, but lacks the filtered clarity of most pilseners. No yeast is visible.

Sm: Fragrant floral hops, lime zest, salt, fresh pilsner malts. Smells great for a pilsner, with ample nuance.

T: Follows the aroma, but the extra flavour from the diverse hops comes at a cost: balance. The beer is a bit too bitter. Still, the added complexity is almost worth it.

Mf: Light-bodied, smooth, wet, refreshing. Suits the style and flavour profile, though blatant overcarbonation negatively impacts drinkability.

O: Highly drinkable and enjoyable, and one of the best pilsners I've had in recent memory. Not up there with Bohemia's finest, but absolutely worth trying.

A: Golden with a copper tinge, touch of haze, large and small bubbles. Two fingers of foamy head with a tinge of orange rustiness.

S: Citrus, orange, grapefruit, grapes, candied jelly or jolly rancher like. Candied orange and orange peel.

T: Fruity, orange and orange peel followed by an herbal bouquet of sagebrush and lavender.

M: Medium chewy body, medium low fine bubbled carbonation.

O: If Mikkeller's brews are hit and miss, it’s a hit. Had KIIN KIIN today, and it pales in comparison. This reminds me of Hitachino Dai Dai Ale, which I also like. Also reminds me of a Saison in spiciness and herbal quality, light sweetness, and relative dry character. Drank in Chiang Mai, Dec 13th, 2014.
