Finally a Mikkeller beer I like. Underrated, IMO.

oh what a slice of heaven this thing is. potentially the best of the series i have had so far, although i have a few more on deck. this is gold, rich and earthy, bloody purple red in color, but clear for what it is, and fizzy like a soda pop. i smell sour before i smell beet, lemony lacto and carbonation bombard me. beet juice is secondary, sweeter than it is by itself thanks to the grain, and yeasty as anything, weird its so clear. i get lacto and brett, sour and funk, longest lasting finish of any sour beer i have ever had. i go from puckery to mouth watering, and then what waters makes me pucker again, and so on and so on. its never ending, waves after waves of almost all the pucker i can stand, but every wave resolves. its so perfect. a little less beet forward than i wanted, but the color and the density make it beety enough for me. the sourness here seems more than in others, not sure if the sugars are more simple so they are eaten more completely or what, but here it is, a beet sour beer thats better than any expectation. reminds me of great dinners, great wines, eastern europe, and late summer all at the same time. mikkeller has taken some flack, but come on people, this is nearly perfect, magical wild ale like none other. my fullest marks for this one off gem.

375ml bottle, one of the stranger conceptual brews that I have ever come across.

This beer pours a clear, bright medium magenta colour, with one finger of weakly puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly pink head, which leaves very little in the way of lace anywhere near the glass as it quickly wafts off.

It smells of tart cherry, plum, and blackberry fruit, some minor musty beet root earthiness, estery yeast, muddled grainy and crackery pale malt notes, and a tame leafy, weedy, and floral green hop bitterness. The taste is still rather sour lemon, lime, and stone fruit acetic acids, a consistently understated Polish or Ukrainian cold beet soup thing (the actual spelling varies, so Imma not even going to fucking try), gritty and grainy pale malt, a touch of edgy wheatiness, some gently phenolic yeast, and more pleasant in their temerity leafy and dead floral verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is surprisingly quite laid-back in its quotidian frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and equally enthralling in its better than expected smoothness. It finishes trending dry, the dry stone fruit esters and that weirdly meek Eastern European winter staple root veggie thing working well to convince me that this is indeed a real boy.

Overall, this was way more enjoyable than I might have been anticipating - Mikkeller has somehow integrated this less than appreciable vegetable into its soured series, with more than a little help from its tart 'n sassy fruity friends. Interesting, robust, and yeah, those are the only hollow words I possess that can explain what the hell I'm tasting right now.

Red/pink with a good amount of carb. Blasts you with musty funk in the smell, maybe a little cherry and cranberry, very Cantillon-like. Taste is very subdued compared to the smell and somewhat of a letdown. Oak, lemon, club soda, some funk, a lingering aftertaste. More fruit than vegetable. Glad I tried it though I think there are better options for the price.

Very sour at first. Finish is long, dry and oaky. Subtle vegetal quality in the finish as well. Color is deep pink (you know, like beet juice).

Very good sour beer. Price was a little high at $12 for 375ml though.
