Bottle. Pours a clear, very dark brown. Not a whole lot of light getting by but it's not black. Smell is spicy and yeasty with dark, dried out fruits. Winter spices. The flavor isn't as sweet as I was expecting. I'm happy about that. Some noticeable roast, which surprised me but I guess it's in the nose a bit. Spiced chocolate. Dates, raisins and cola. Just a little bit of anise. Finishes surprisingly dry considering the style. The beer is kind of hot but nowhere near as alcoholic as my initial expectations. I enjoyed this. Rarely do I truly like this style of beer. This one was one of the better Dark Belgians I have had.

Wow! Right out of the bottle, smelling it you would think you are pouring FBS, except for the color, although it is not far off.

A- Pours surprisingly dark and black that lets little light through. With a light brown head that dissipated into a lasting ring with some wispy lacings 4/5

S- Raisins, Dates, Coffee, Nutmeg, Dark Cherry, Vanilla, Chocolate. Such a great smelling brew.4.5/5

T- Tastes much more like a stout. Wonderful blend of strong coffee and chocolate flavors, not what I expected from a Belgian Dark Ale. the dark fruits come through but are more subtle. Not getting much spice, just very slight cinnamon/nutmeg flavors on the finish. As it warms more caramel/vanilla comes out. 4.25/5

M- Fairly heavy body, not quite FBS but closer to that than to most Belgian Dark Ales that I have had in the past, lower carbonation, again this reminds me way more of a stout than anything. The mouthfeel complements the beer perfectly. 4.5/5

O- I am going back to buy 2 more bottles ASAP. Perfect Winter Beer. I think I picked this up for $13 and It is worth that all day. 4.5/5

Appearance - Poured into a small snifter revealing a near black brew with cola brown edging. Dark khaki two-finger head that displays fair retention before giving way to a thin, broken layer of surface suds. Leaves a decent amount of lacing around the glass with

Smell - Predominant aroma of chocolate and anise with hints of raisin on the back end.

Taste - Follows the nose for the most part, with equal parts chocolate, anise and cola. Faint hints of plum and/or raisin creep in mid-taste. Sweet, sugary cola finish. If there's any spice, it's hidden in that cola character.

Mouthfeel - Close to full in body with light, tingly carbonation. Smooth and drinkable; one wouldn't know this is 10.9% based on it's drinkable qualities.

Overall - Not too impressed with this one, and it's definitely one of the more ho-hum Belgian Strongs I've had. Far from terrible, but there's simply nothing interesting about it.

First time having a fresh batch, this beer is good fresh but much better with a few years on it.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color-only traces of dar red are visible near the edges of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a half finger high beige head that died down, leaving a thick collar of large bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of candi sugars are present in the nose.
T: Similar to the smell, the taste starts out with flavors of candi sugars and has associated sweetness. No dark fruits are apparent.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a rather smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is quite drinkable considering its strength and does a very good job of hiding its alcohol. It seems more like a Dubbel compared to a Belgian Strong Dark Ale given the sweetness.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into snifter.
A: Pours an extremely dark brown (essentially no light comes through with backlighting) with a 2-3 inch rocky dark mocha head with good retention. Nice lacing too. Well, this one sure looks like a treat!
S: Dark caramel malt, dark dried fruit, milk chocolate, light roast coffee and cream, brown sugar, hint of leather and spice (mint, cinnamon, and clove).
T: Soft molasses and brown sugar, dark dried fruit (raisin and fig), milk chocolate, light roast coffee and cream, a soft blush of sweet bourbon booze, oaky vanilla, and a subtle vinous note. With warming, more of the spice (cinnamon, clove, and mint) emerges. Very nice!
M: Oh so soft and smooth. Velvety. Medium body (ABV extremely well hidden). Sweet (but controlled) throughout. Mildly dry finish. Lingers and matures nicely on the palate.
D: Extremely well constructed brew! I really like how the spice is present (necessary for a Christmas beer), but is well in the background...only playing third or fourth fiddle to the other components. Complex and a good sipper...and yet the ABV is so well hidden that you'll soon find yourself halfway through the bottle before you know it. Seek it out!

A: Dark brown, cloudy with a finger or two of beige foam.

S: Brown sugar, much like Mikkeller's other attempts at dark or Belgian quads. Sort of butterscotch, to me its the only thing detracting from the brew. Then some dark fruits, smooth and rich.

T: Dark fruits, red fruits like cherries and raspberries, some citrus orange, all melded together in a smooth composition.

M: Thick body that is smooth due to the fine foamy carbonation. Velvety.

O: Tried this on tap at the Mikkeller Bar in Bangkok. Really well done brew. Strong, and beautiful.
