Had this at Sour Sunday at Triple Rock. Pours a pretty cherry color, red, more of a darker cherry appearance. The head is an interesting color, kind of like a tan/creamer colored head.

Aroma kicked down some totally anticipated sour cherry notes. Taste was more of a mixture of sour and dark cherries. Not much funk, good sourness and cherry pie filling flavors. Mikkeller takes a lot of shit, often justifiably so given their penchant for super expensive beers. Glad I got to try this one at a fest without dropping $15/375. Everything cherry and sour dominates, notes of wheat or barrel are drowned out, but they're drowned out by good stuff so no complaints.

Too expensive to buy in the bottle, but I'd bang this out on draft if given the opportunity or sampling.

I picked up a bottle of Mikkeller's Spontansourcherry for $13.49 at The Lager Mill. I've been wanting to try some of these sour Mikkeller beers for a while, so lets see how it goes. 2015 Vintage. Poured from a 375ml brown bottle into a teku.

A- The label looks good, it goes well with the name and it's a little eye catching. It poured a nice crimson and ruby color that took on more of a nice bright red color when held to the light with a little under a fingers worth of bubbly light tan head that died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it didn't really leave any lacing behind. This is a pretty nice looking beer, but I wish it had some better lacing.

S- The aroma starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with a funky brett yeast being the first to show up and it imparts some nice funky barnyard like aromas and it's followed by a higher amount of sourness with some noticeable sour cherry aromas with a little bit of grainy, bready and malty aroma towards the end. This beer has a good aroma, all the different aspects work well together.

T- The taste seems to be pretty similar to the aroma and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with the funkyness still being the first to show up and it imparts those same brett and barnyard like aspects that it did in the aroma. Up next comes a higher amount of sourness that is a little mouth puckering and it's followed by some nice sour cherry flavors that are just slightly lighter than they were in the aroma. Towards the end there's slight bit of doughy malts with some lingering sourness and some cherry flavors in the aftertaste. This is a pretty nice tasting beer, but I wish it had just a little more cherry flavor and a little less sourness.

M- A little smooth, mouth puckering, on the acidic side, medium bodied with a slightly higher amount of medium carbonation, The beer had a pretty nice mouthfeel, but I wish it was a little smoother and not so acidic.

Overall I thought this was a pretty nice beer and a nice example of the style, it's pretty true to style, but when it comes to the sourness it starts to get just a little out of hand and that starts to hurt the drinkability. This beer just had ok drinkability, half a glass is the perfect amount for me, anymore than that and it would start to ware on me, What I like the most about this beer is the aroma, it's good and it's fairly well balanced. What I like the least about this beer is that the sourness was a little too high and I wish more of those cherry flavors came through. I don't think I would buy this beer again, it's pretty expensive, but I wouldn't turn one down. I would only recommend this beer if you like them really sour. All in all I liked this beer, but I didn't love it and I think with just a little more work this could be a very good beer. it's not a favorite Mikkeller beer and it's above average for the style. Nice job guys, with a little more work this could be a great beer.

375 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 8/19/2025. Pours clear deep ruby red color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy light pine head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big sweet/sour black cherry, berries, lemon, green apple, red grape, hay, straw, pepper, leather, musty funk, toasted oak, light red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, oak barrel, and moderate malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big sweet/sour black cherry, berries, lemon, green apple, red grape, hay, straw, pepper, leather, musty funk, toasted oak, light red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Moderate fruity/acidic tartness and yeast/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of sour black cherry, berries, lemon, green apple, red grape, hay, straw, pepper, leather, musty funk, toasted oak, light red wine vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, oak barrel, and moderate malt flavors; with a great malt/tart/spiciness balance and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Moderate dryness from acidity/spiciness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, acidic/tannic, and fairly creamy/bready/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding cherry fruit lambic. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, oak barrel, and moderate malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink with the balanced acidity. A highly enjoyable offering.

Best before 19/08/25. Served cold in a tall lambic glass

Appearance: Robitussin red with a nice ruby head. Spritzy carbonation and very clear

Nose: sour cherry, medicinal, candy sweetness, very fruit forward

Taste: follows the nose well, cherry, sour chery, cherry pie filling, some medicinal, lightly sour enough to cleanse the palate but not strip your tooth enamel. Very refreshing. Highly drinkable. Light body. Lemony, very dry finish

Overall: fantastic kriek beer here. This is my first from Mikkeller and I'm really loving it. I'd like to see a little more body like I remember Boon Oude Kriek having. Great fruited lambic.

On draft -- Cough syrup cherry red, minimal head, some funk and lots of fruit on the nose, properly tart for a fruit lambic but not bracingly sour. More sour than funk/barnyard, great acid and clean expression of the fruit. A great find on a work trip in the Philly exurbs.

In a teku the beer was plum colored with a small pink head.
The aroma was both sweet and sour cherry.
The taste followed the nose: sweet and sour cherry. A bit of citrus in the background.
Tart, but I hoped it would be a little more tart.
Good beer.

next to the sweet cherry edition, im not sure i get a sweet and sour difference between them so much as i get a darker cherry here. the sweet is blood red, this is more of a crimson, equally hazy and heady though. the smell is similar, honestly this might even be a little more jammy in the nose, but its definitely quite a bit more sour, less funky, in the taste. im not convinced the fruit is responsible for that that, seems like a more developed lacto acidity working, rather than necessarily a sourer cherry. the cherry flavor is awesome though, a nice pucker and a summery sweetness too, kriek like, but almost like its blended with a darker fruit too, blackberry or something. smooth in feel, definitely more body in this one than the sweet, and plenty of wood coming through as well. while both of these beers are great, they werent standouts in the series for me. i guess they are more conventional, everyone makes cherry lambic, its definitely a little harder t come across beetroot and seabuckthorn versions... that said this is of impressive overall quality and should more than satisfy even the most seasoned drinker of fine kriek.

N: very light hints of cherry tart.

T: medium carbonation, medium to light cherry flavor, light tart. Finishes like a luscious red wine.
