Picked a bottle up on a whim...
popped the top on this beer, gusher. Tried to get some into a glass, poured about 3oz of beer to 9oz head. Looks ok, black and opaque, head is dark khaki. Nose is metallic, no roast, no malts. Tastes like tart nails. No malt, no barrel, no coffee. Mouthfeel is thin and watery, way over carbonated. Not sure if this was poor packaging, or infected, but what a terrible waste of money.

12 oz bottle poured into snifter

A: huge head got about half in the glass before the head almost overflowed. Mocha chocolate head with soapy big bubbles that drop down to a chunky head and a pure obsidian body

S: lots of metallic bitterness, some alcohol and some bitter chocolate

T: very muted you get some chocolate and hints of maybe coffee and some cheap whiskey but it is very faint and no sweetness its a little dry

M: for being barrel aged it is very creamy and just slightly chalky

O: its average and surprisingly tasteless. For being blended in different barrels the properties of the barrels did not transfer it really doesn't even taste much like a stout its just bland. For $13 bucks I would have rather crumpled it up and burned it just a shit beer no depth no real character just bland.

I don't leave many reviews here but I'll do so now to tell folks to avoid. The reviews below are accurate, there is something wrong here. The beer is crazy over carbonated. A BA stout should not gush out of the neck of a bottle that's at rest. When you pour a BA stout into a tulip glass, it should not be a half of inch of beer with 3-4 inches of foamy head. I feel as though I just threw money away having just spent $12 on a bottle which I promptly poured down the drain.

I did taste it, and the taste was decent, if you could get through all of the prickly carb. The smell was great, but could not follow through as the massive amount of carbonation stole all aspects of the show here. Look/taste/feel all take hits here on an aggressively carbonated stout.

Reading the reviews, I was expecting some level of carbonation but nothing that would subsequently cover my entire carpet in a sea of brown froth. I am currently sitting here, covered in sticky stout as I write this review, the thing having exploded like a champagne bottle as I opened it.

Thanks Mikkeller, I've just lost half a bottle of £7.25 beer, most of it on me.

Nevertheless, may as well soldier on. This thing pours the darkest mocha head I've ever seen; we're talking dark chocolate expresso head - four to five fingers high. Crazy carbonation.

The aroma is all over me so I can't mistake what's going on; we've got sherry, brandy, whisky, cooked cherries, stewed baked fig, bourbon, melted treacle, umami, oak and date. This is the most malted and dark fruit-heavy beer I've smelled in a long time.

Once the carbonation is done with, it drinks like a smooth, creamy malted fig liqueur. This is such a massive, flavourful stout with dark fruit, treacle, molasses, creamy whisky, and expresso. The booze is very well hidden underneath the sticky flavours. And for such a dark fruited beer, this is quite well balanced, with the sweetness nicely balanced with savoury umami malts.

Mouthfeel is moderate-full, smooth, and no hint of carbonation for a beer that exploded.

I want to dislike this stout because it's all over me, but it's actually very, very nice. It reminds me of a thick doppelbock, sort of like the vintage 2012 Aventinus Tap 6 with more savoury flavours. It isn't as thick as I was expecting, but by god is it moreish.

Bottle cap says 09/07/25
Opened 10/6/15
$11.99 for the 11.2 oz bottle

Poured super carbonated regardless of my slow and steady pour into a stemless wine glass. Could not pour the whole bottle, had to wait for the tanning head to subside.

Smell of wood, chocolate, coffee, cocoa bitterness, slight sweetness, slight mint, alcohol, blended barrel smell I guess, and a "high carbonation" smell if that makes sense. Not tart or sour, but almost.

Taste- hodgepodge of barrel, cacao bitterness and chocolate. Alcohol bitterness on the backend. I wish I could say more, but overall, not good. The only barrel taste I sort of identify are the cognac and madera, but that sweetness isn't enough to save the beer.

If you're a fan of not sweet, bitter cacao, coffee barrel aged beer, I guess this is for you. Not what I wanted nor what I expected from Mikkeller, but its stuff like this that keeps me running into Evil Twins open arms.

A- Pitch black with a HUGE head. Could not get the whole bottle in the glass.

S- Sweet, dark chocolate, booze, some coffee.

T- All over the place. I get woodiness and a incoherent range of varying barrel charcteristics. Dark chocolate.

M- Super high carbonation. Kind of burns with how high it is.

D- Will not get this one again.

Make sure you have your glass nearby and are standing over the kitchen sink, because this beer is insanely carbonated. Pours a dark, creamy, opaque brew, with an insanely tall, frothy, espresso-dark head with good retention. It looks amazing. The smell is quite nice, too - bourbon, whiskey, tequila, dark chocolate, cocoa and, of course, coffee. The taste is blander than I expected, sharp bitter with notes of brewed coffee, dark chocolate and some dry liquor, like gin or tequila.

Bottle foamed over upon opening, but didn't seem to be infected

A- Jet black with coco brown head
S- Roasty malts, dark fruit, cherried, oak, bit of booze
T- Well balanced for having 6 barrels. Still a nice roasty stout with balanced sweetness from the barrels and cherry wine.
F- Medium to thick
O- Fun beer

Black color with dark brown head. Aroma has a fresh, hoppy character and also milk chocolate. Taste follows with the chocolate note and whiskey. Definitely on the bitter side. Body is quite heavy but also has a high carbonation. Good overall but I don't think the blend works as good as the single barrel aged variants.

330ml bottle poured into a snifter
Best before 9/7/2025

A- we've got a gusher, lost a couple of ounces after opening. Pours an opaque black color with a two-finger dark brown head that sticks around long after the pour, with carbonation bubbles floating on top

S- aroma is all over the place, I can distinguish the cherry wine, roasted malts, agave, oak, dark fruit and a hint of cherry

T- as with the aroma, flavor is all over the place up front, opens with bitter dark chocolate and coffee, then the barrel treatments start to show up. Picking up some cognac & brandy, not so much the other barrels. Dark fruit kicks in near the finish, along with cocoa and more coffee. The linger brings out a bit of the cherry wine treatment as well

M- medium body with high carbonation immediately fills the mouth and continues all the way into the finish, definitely over carbonated

O- an interesting beer, definitely hindered by the over carbonation. I enjoyed it, but it's just all over the place. This is a perfect example of complex not necessarily meaning better. Every other Beer Geek beer has been a homerun for me

Gusher.
Way too high carb in the mouth.
Ruins it pretty much.
And for a damn near a dollar an ounce brew, it needs to be better. Luckily usually these guys are.
