Notes from 10/14/11
*12oz bottle to pint glass

A: Pours a hazy honey color with some orange hues and a one finger frothy beige head. Nice lace factor.

S: Smells of catty Simcoe hops and some sweet bready caramel malts.

T: Real nice pine and citrus hop flavors present. Some dank herbals. Malt base is lighter than expected. Sugary presence but not heavy and grainy. Moderate bitterness levels. Lighter crisp finish. This is actually pretty good.

M: Super light and creamy body. Bit of a sticky residual mouthfeel. Dry crisp clean finish.

D: Not bad at all and very drinkable. Probably one of the better, if not best, Mikkeller brews I have come across yet.

Love me some Simcoes and this one does a pretty decent job at letting the hop flavors perform. Would have again for sure.

tulip glass - no date.

a - pours a rich, murky, copper color and gives me a strong, two finger, tan head that rises up out of the glass. retention is pretty good - halfway through the glass i still have a thin cap. leaves a few tufts of lace here and there. seems to be a lot more sediment in this one than some others in the series.

s - grassy with some pale malt character. slightly phenolic.

t - toasted malt character with notes of apple or grape. hop character is leaning toward herbal, bitterness is light and doesn't linger. dry finish.

m - on the lighter side with average carbonation.

o - not as enjoyable as the other two from the series that i have tried (chinook and palisade), but still a good beer. probably wouldn't buy it again unless it were for a tasting though.

Pours amber, the head thickly lacry. Nose is sweet and floral like jasmine flowers showering in simple syrup. Double-take flavors...dry and icey in the mouth...hints of young grapefruit come to mind, with a quickly tapering minty exit that vanishes abruptly. There’s a consistent floral background riding along at all times. This is damn classy...seriously, its like champagne..

Poured into a Pint glass. Tall head foamy with a little lacing effect. It pretty much is glued to the glass... It's a delight to stare at.. hahah Golden copper tone in color. A little hazy. Smell was fruity. Lots of fruit on the palate with the hops kickin' in... Smooth IPA! I really enjoyed this one. Full Hop character through out, but with more of a fruit kick and less of the pine... If you like IPAs, you really should give it a try! Real Good!

Copper ale with gold highlights, and, because I was watching football too closely, a fair amount of dregs in the bottom of the glass. Dirty white head on top that lingers for a long time. Simcoe hop is clean and clear in the nose, but not very strong. Need a swirl to pop it up. Strong carbonation bite along with the hops bitterness. Not an overly hopping IPA, but very fun to drink.

This beer poured out as a nice golden color, the head was pretty good looking. The lacing wasn't too bad on the glass. The smell of the beer has a nice earthy yet lively aroma of the hops in it. The taste was well balanced between the hops and malts I thought. The mouthfeel of this beer isn't too bad, Overall I enjoyed this beer and wouldn't mind having it again. The only other Simcoe based IPA I've had was from Weyerbacher and I think this might be better than that one.

The single hop review series continues with Simcoe. Picked up a bottle of Citra the other day, so I have that and Centennial left.
Yep, looks like the others Great creamy off white head with decent structure. Quickly settles once it decides to go leaving the skeleton of whipped egg whites floating atop the beer. Clumpy lacing everywhere. Tan/Amber color.
Aroma is very nice. Earthy with pine notes with a background of fruit.
Earthy depth is also in the flavor. This one works. While certainly a bitter IPA, there is a harmonious balance to the flavor. Lots of fruit notes here. In the background you can be reminded of a pine car freshener.
The hop bitterness lays a little slick on your tongue
Good one… I’d drink this again. I think this is my 2nd favorite to the Nelson.

A - This beer pours a nice dark amber color. It has a big 3-finger off-white head on it. The head has good retention, and it leaves behind some nice lacing on the glass. There is quite a bit of sediment floating around here.

S - There is an earthy grassy smell and some caramel maltiness. It has a nice pine and citrus hop presence. There is also a bit of toastiness and fruitiness.

T - Taste starts off with some toasted maltiness and a big piney hop bite to it. There is a nice earthiness here as well. Also, there is a lot of citrus. Mostly, I am getting the big hop bitterness and citrus.

M - This has a medium body and good carbonation. It has a big hop bitterness that lingerings on the palate for a little bit. Has a nice creamy feel to it overall.

O - This has good drinkability. It goes down easy and the flavor is good. Overall, I thought this was a really nice IPA. It has a nice light toasted backbone, a strong hop presence, and some nice citrus flavor. I would buy this one again.

A- pours a deep amber color with a solid finger and a half of off white head. The retention is very nice as the head pretty much stays at about a finger and displays some good lacing.

S- very green fresh leafy hops hit the nose at first. Citrusy notes blend in nicely with a predominate ruby red grapefruit and pine. A touch of lemon zest is present as well. Finishes with a bit of biscuity malt.

T- Big hop flavor of grapefruit and pine with a nice biscuity malt that balances out the soft bitterness that comes in the middle nicely. Lemon zest and leafy hop flavors with a hint of hemp towrds the end. Finishes is piney with a lingering leafy hop flavor.

MF- creamy smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and some pretty active carbonation.

D- super drinkable.

Overall a very drinkable smooth IPA that showcases the simcoe hop with finesse. Tons of hop flavor with a balanced bitterness. Bravo.

Got this as one from the hop series. 12oz bottle...

A: A clear reddish color with a huge off white head, 2 inch+ that fades slowly to a lace atop the brew. Very good.

S: A very nice bitter citrus scent upfront with some hints of lemon in the middle. A smooth mild grain on the backend. Decent.

T: A nice clean malt upfront quickly followed by a piney hop bite in the middle. A nice earthy bitterness on the back. Good.

M: Medium body with a hard carbonation. A slightly bitter malty finish. Good.

O: All in all, this is a good beer. This is the second I have tried in the single hop series and this is the better of the 2 so far. I'm kind of wondering what quantity of each hop they use in each single hop brew. I notice the IBU on the Willamette version was a lot lower than the IBU on this one.

On draft at Churchkey in D.C.

The beer is orange with a finger of white head. The aroma offers a combo of earthy malts, pine, and resin. The flavor could stand to feature the hop character much more than it does. Unexciting and typical of the Mikkeller single hop series. A terrific idea, but I can think of a hundred different IPAs I would rather have.

A: Dark golden with a thick white foamy head. It head sticks around for the entire time and laces the glass nicely.

S: A wonderful aroma of Simcoe hops really shines through. Simcoe hops offer a very unique hop character that are not matched by any other hop out there. There is a very clean aroma with a slight bit of citrus and pine, but not over-powering. A good grapefruit character. There is also a slight sweetness from that malt that is coming through as well.

T: Starts out with a refreshing mellow citrus flavor and transitions into a very bitter taste on the backend, leaving a bitter after-taste as well. The malt character is mild and balanced well enough to really allow the hop aroma and flavor to come through.

M: Very light and refreshing. Carbonation is matched perfectly for the beer characters to come through.

O: A very good and interesting idea on how to really experience and taste a hop profile. The malt character was mild to enjoy the full hop potential.

Pours an amber gold with a very thick inch of head. Nice lace.

Pale malts, green apple and bright citrus make up most of the smell.

The taste starts with pale and caramalt sweetness and is quickly followed by a dry bitterness in the vein of apple and lemon peel. Very dry finish.

I liked it. It's nice to know what Simcoe can add to a brew.

Appearance. Pours a hazy amber-brown with 2 fingers of sticky, thick white head that leaves some nice bands of lace.

Smell. Peaches, apples, grapefruit and floral perfume. Just a little caramel in there. Smells good.

Taste. Apples, grapefruit and lemon rinds, caramel, and a little pine sap. Bitter floral-citrus hops in the finish.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with medium carbonation.

Overall. Nice ipa that shows off the simcoe hop. Easy to drink with great hop flavours.

Thanks Sammy! Another fine choice.

Amber color, same as the warrior & columbus that I also tried. Thin off white head.

Smell isn't as much as columbus, but its hoppy, resinous pine

The taste is very strong piney hops. This was the most overpowering taste of the ones I tried. Like drinking a pine tree haha. I really enjoyed this.

Overall its really good, the piney bitterness lingers for quite a while. I want to try the whole collection for sure but I could see myself coming back to this

A: pours a hazy orange brown hue with good carbonation and tiny floaties. 2 fingers of dense head. Nice lacing.

S: nice hoppy aroma. Pine and citrus and a touch of malt

T: piney/ citrus character with a pleasant bitterness on the end

M: bitterness barely lingers a very refreshing feeling on my palate

O: I liked this single hop the best so far, Simcoe brings the goods on both ends, aroma and flavor

Tasted after Mikkeller's Sorachi Ace and Bravo Single Hop IPA's.

A-Pours out a cloudy but bright orange with a full two fingers of dense, dirty white head.Decent retention and gummy ribbons of lace.

S-This is exactly the nose I've come to associate with Simcoe.Grapefruit, peach, cat pee and pine.

T-Undeniably Simcoe!Grapefruit, stonefruit(nectarine and apricot),pine, slight orange zest and sourdough bread.

M-Light to medium bodied with a slight dryness.Tart and prickly.

O-A really solid showcase of one of my favorite hop varietals.

Pours a murky burnt orange with bits stirring about. The head is a peachy hued tan, thick and frothy, with nice retention.

Caramel sweetness to the nose with a good dose of hops giving citrus and earthy scents.

A strong pine hop presence from the simcoe, pretty strong bitterness. Getting a little pine in there as well. A solid malt backbone offering up caramel, nuts and some roasted malt. Lingering bitterness.

The carbonation is perfect; soft and fluffy. Dry bodied.

A nice single hop beer that highlights the simcoe well. Glad to have tried it as it is a well crafted brew.

Recently purchased at the liquor locker Weinbach location in Evansville, IN. Grabbed the last one. I was shocked to see this in Evansville. Had a date of October last year so I had reservations, but I think the quality was still as intended. Poured from 12 oz bottle into a tulip.

A - Cloudy orange and brown hues with a thick head of fluffy foam. Extensive lacing.

S - Nice hop aroma, but definitely more piney than citrusy

T - Nice piney hop flavor as is expected from the simcoe hops used. Not overpowering

M - Has a very slick mouthfeel with a gentle carbonation.

I am glad I got the chance to try this. These beers are intended to educate on the flavor and aroma profile of certain hop varieties. As a relative newbie to craft beer I appreciated the opportunity to sample a beer using only one hop varietal. I would not hesitate to try the others if offered.

A: Very dark amber pour with a huge fluffy off-white head. Sticks around forever and sticks to the glass well too.

S: Smells exactly like cat urine. Though, somehow in a pleasant way. I'm not sure how I can quantify that but if you've ever smelled cat urine, simcoe just jumps out at you.

T: Spicy and citrusy at the same time. Aftertastes lasts a long time and never really seems to fade much between sips.

M: Pretty medium bodied. Pretty smooth beer. As mentioned above, bittering aftertaste sticks around quite well.

D: Not bad. I think I might put this one second after the Citra single hop version. Simple but an intriguing experiment - this one (like the Citra) could almost stand on its own as a normal IPA.

A: I didn't read the bottle and therefore didn't know it was bottle conditioned. Needless to say I ended up with a lot of floaties. Other than that it looks good. A thin white head tops a hazy dark orange beer. Little visible carbonation.

S: It has a nice sweet scent backed by some little pine and floral characteristics.

T: Oh yeah. The bitterness is right upfront and lingers nicely. It is sweet, not dry; it also has a good citrus flavor of tangerines.

M: Moderate carbonation and medium bodied.

D: Easily drinkable for almost 7% ABV beer. I like this one quite a lot.

I had this at ChurchKey where they had 10+ Mikkeller single hop IPAs. It was interesting to taste the characteristics of this hop without interference from other hop types. I sampled about 8 of them and this was my favourite.

A: Orange color and 3 mm head that fades to good lacing. 4

S: The aroma was flowery and sweet. That lovely hoppiness you get with from Simcoe hops. 4.5

T: The flavour was mild with some... butteriness. There was also some metallic bitterness in the aftertaste. 4

M: Pretty thick and reasonably carbonated. 4

O: This was a really nice IPA, but honestly, I prefer the Weyerbacher double-Simcoe. 4

This beer pours a hazy caramel color with a finger of off white foamy head that retains well. The aroma has sweet malty notes and, you guessed it, simcoe hops! The taste starts sweet malty and then becomes spicy and hoppy bitter. The mouthfeel is nice an balanced and clean. Overall a pretty decent IPA.

A: Foggy Honey orange, a beach sunset in a glass. Just enough clarity to see the beer horizon. About a finger head with modest lacing.

S: Zesty! Bold citrus favoring grapefruit. Orange makes an appearance with tangelo juiciness. There's a party in the orchard, and Mikkeller is buying the drinks.

T: Deliciously smooth and spicy. A light hop bitterness that is suggestive of steamed dark veggies. Dark Veggies that are zested with a copious amount of citrus. Drink to your health!

M: The mouth dissipates pretty rapidly. I will give it the benefit of the doubt and say "low carbonation". It's there, I just have to give it some thought. It definitely could have used the help of the mouth to make this a really consistent experience. Oh well, the orchard party must go on! Despite the zephyr of a mouth-feel.

D: Overall this beer is at is says "simcoe single-hop". Not dynamic, but it's not trying to be. There is a deliciousness here, but it is not an evangelist. No one will be converted, but the simcoe choir will sing its praises.

Poured into a Stone nonic

A: Brownish amber with a pretty two finger head. Lacing is nice and foamy.

S: Tropical fruits smell on a bed of slight citrus and melted sugar. Smells unusually sweet. Nice level of aroma, not a punch in the nose but you don't have to go searching for it.

T: Surprising taste. Starts off sweet with peach and orange coming through then transitions into a short lived but surprisingly boozey flavor, and the finish gets bitter and lingers with a combination of the tastes. Aftertaste actually reminded me of Arrogant Bastard (stone)'s initial taste.

M: Carbonation doesn't stick out much in the mouthfeel but I don't think it's to the detriment of the beer. A nice viscocity and smooth drink; leaves the mouth feeling soothed.

O: A nice and interesting IPA from Mikkeller. I'm not sure I would pick it up again but for people with special interest in IPAs I must admit the uniqueness of this one. Seems to avoid the generic categories of IPA mouthfeels and flavors, and seems to bring something different to the game with its diverse multi-staged flavors.
