This is a review of the ORIGINAL Beer Geek Breakfast. This is an expensive stout & I plan doing one review no matter how good it is. The label artwork intrigued me to give it a try. It was a birthday beer. The coffee that they use in this brew is quite luscious. One of the best stouts EVER. There newly revamped version tastes nothing like the ORIGINAL version of this beer. Cheers! A (95-99) World Class

11.2 oz bottle poured into a tulip

Appearance - dark brown body with dark tan head

Smell - fresh brewed coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts, baker's chocolate, ash

Taste - coffee upfront, dark and baker's chocolate, little bit of cocoa and char at the back end

Mouthfeel - medium bodied, low carbonation, coffee upfront, dark and baker's chocolate to follow that

Overall - Coffee dominant beer, not overly complex. decent beer that I may not re-visit due to the price point

Price Point - $4.99/11.2 oz bottle

Pours....like coffee. Very little head, no retention

Nose is all coffee, with a bit of cocoa.

Taste again is dominated by coffee, but it has minor characteristics that I'd associate with a porter...roasted malt, slight astringency (I tend to think of stouts as heavier and sweeter...I know they're functionally the same though)

Lighter bodied, minimal carbonation, very smooth.

Honestly, if you put this in a coffee mug side by side with cold brew, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Definitely leans more towards the coffee end of the beer/coffee spectrum.

All I really get out of this is cold, burnt coffee. Seems to taste less burnt as it warms to room temp., but it never improves. No head, not much aroma. Does taste better than cold coffee, which I attribute to the impact of the malt and alcohol, but the burnt coffee flavor overwhelms anything else that might be there.

It reminds me very much of the Founders Breakfast stout. While I might be able to tell them apart if I had them side-by-side, from memory they are the same; and I wasn't that found of the FBS either. The FBS I had was 18 months old at the time; and this one had to come all the way from Norway, so maybe these are much better fresher (yet the Mikkeller bottle has a best by 2020 date on it). I'd be happy to try one again fresh from the brewery (should I ever find myself in Norway), but I've had wonderful coffee stouts, and this isn't one of them.

It pours opaque black color with small light brown head. Retention is not strong as I expected. Foam leaves a thin cover on top. It smells like a cup of espresso and aroma is fully dominated by coffee. Yeast, roasted malts and chocolate aromas are in background. Taste is fairly complex and bitter. Coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, slight vanilla and lots of bittering hops.
Med-full bodied. Low carbonation. Fairly smooth on the palate due to oatmeal. Dry and slightly warming finish.
Well made coffee beer. It deserves its popularity.

Pours opaque black with a dark tan head.
The aroma is milk chocolate, roast coffee and brown sugar.
Big roasted coffee up front with chocolate and a slightly unpleasant char. Lingering coffee and a hint of dark fruit.
Mouthfeel is medium smooth.
Good but far from my favorite coffee stout.
