We should all be a little more spontaneous. If you're like Mikkeller's sour ale series that celebrates the wild, you'd be a little less refined but would be a lot more fun. Going with the flow, take what life gives you and taking advantage of every adventure and opportunity, we'd all benefit from this change. ...except for it's expensive, so you've got to plan ahead.

As the name would suggest, Spontanblueberry celebrates all things blueberry and sour, starting with a mysteriously deep lavender and crimson hue and settling with broken and beaded foam. Piquant and fruit aromatics fill the nose with dark wine, cobbler, and soft funk and fauna. Seemingly cobbler-like also on the tongue, the spontaneously fermented ale starts with light pastry tarts, residual grape juices, taffy and a hint of sourdough.

As the ale embarks upon the middle palate, its malt influence collapses and the blueberry flavor floods the tastebuds. Juicy, radiant and branch ripe, the blueberry character is authentic and fully fermented, reminiscent of blueberry wine, burgundy and plum. Hints of balsamic and apple come across in a slightly more acetic Flander's red kind of way.

Medium light on the palate, the robust nature of blueberry has the beer registering richer than actual while its bracing acidity breaks up the sweetness with ease; using hints of leather and oak to dry the finish and introduce a fruited lambic nuance for balance and complexity. A medium length aftertaste is due to the fruit juices that leave fruity impressions in a medium length aftertaste.

Had this at Sour Sunday at Triple Rock brewery on February 11, 2018. I always like sampling Mikkeller stuff at festivals because you get it way cheaper than paying their typical prices on a shelf.

Anyways, I tend to like blueberry more than your average fruit if that helps anything in terms of parsing my score via my own bias and preference. Cool mix of purple color with a 1/3" pink head. Looks cool. Aroma of blueberry and sourness. Wood? Didn't get it, nor did I get any funky brett or other spontaneous notes.

Taste is a little bit of blueberry and lemon. Mild wood component comes out. Mild hay like effect taste wise that wasn't getting across in the aroma. Average acidic feels in the mouth feel. Good dry finish after that.

Overall I liked the beer, but given that it costs more than $1/oz, it just doesn't rise to the level of a beer that I would buy bottles of and put in the cellar. You can get twice as much lambic or gueuze for a nicer price right off the shelf (Cuvee Rene).

A 375ml bottle with a best before date of 27th June 2027. Poured into a 3 Fonteinen stemmed glass.

Appearance: A very nice cloudy dark purple, beetroot like colour with a big just over two finger purple head that had decent retention and left some nice lacing.

Aroma: Tart, barnyard funk, horse blanket, oak, lemon and only light blueberries in the background.

Taste: Tart, sour, lemon, oak, funk and blueberry.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: This was ok, but after I’ve tried Spontantripleblueberry, it seems I just can’t go back as I feel that the blueberries in this just isn’t strong enough, especially in the aroma. Instead, the lemon and funk dominate the blueberry to the point that it doesn’t really come through.

If you are into Lambic's, this is a good one, and personally I love blueberries, especially the wild tart ones (bilberries).

Look: opaque deep purple color with an inch thick pink head

Aroma: wheat crackers and tart blueberry

Taste: The flavor is wheat crackers, perhaps a hint of oak, lemon, and lots of tart blueberries.

Feel: light a bit dry

Dark purplish-black with a vibrant, light violet head settling to a collar.

Smell is toasted cracker, woody funk and soft cheese, flipping the script on the palate to a nice soft blueberry and oak that turns acidic and sour, and slightly harsh, with a light body, medium froth and dry finish.

On tap at Underdog, Dublin.
Pink ring over deep purple. 4
Balsamic, cherry juice, and funky wood. 4
Berry hit, blast of acetic, lemon zest, cheese rind, and big chalky end. 4.25
Crisp, light, flinty. 3.75

Too minerally, dirty, and immature. But the blueberry does grow as it opens. Not Brussels, but not bad. 4
