bottle cap read 08/01/11

pours murky amber orange with a 2 finger pillowy chunky head that had good retention and left lacing all over the glass

smells of citrus and a little evergreen/xmas tree - also has malt

taste is a bit rough - bitter sour citrus hops with some xmas tree mixed with sweet malts

mouthfeel is ok - very carbonated medium body

drinkability is so so - glad i tried this one but its not for me

Sampled this beer on draft with an almost full line-up of the Single Hop series (Amarillo, Cascade, Chinook, East Kent, Nelson Sauvin, Nugget, Simcoe, Tomohawk, Warrior. No Centennial.) at Max's Taproom in Baltimore on 4/24/10.

Definitely a much stronger hop, this hits you in the face. Spice and earthy notes are apparent alongside some citrus flavors with this Single Hop. Not the best pairing for the malt profile of this beer, but it would be near impossible to have a wort match perfectly with 10 different types of hops. Leaves a lingering bitterness and dry cotton feeling in the aftertaste.

Thanks to egajdzis & hopdog for this...
Another American IPA from our Danish friends using a hop from the good 'ol USA.
Appears a hazy, cider toned brown with a small off white head.
Smell is of citrusy orange hops, and very American.
Taste is of sweet hop resin and light traces of caramel.
Mouthfeel is ok with the sugary citrus sweetness settling on the front of the tongue.

Had this one with a friend a few days ago. Poured an amber color with slightly offwhite head that faded slow and left good lacing. Smelled of floral/earthy hops and malt. Tasted of earthy hops, caramel malt, and toasty flavors. Fizzy and slightly dry mouthfeel. Drank fairly nicely.

Pours a pretty clear amber color with two fingers of light beige head. Makes a mess of stick on the sides and keeps a thin but full lace.

Smell has a tropical fruitiness and a bit of orange, but doesn't have the citrusy aromas I'd expect from cascade. It's bready with some caramels sweetness, but not as hoppy as I expected. It is within the best by date, which is January 2011, but is nothing special.

Like the nose the taste just doesn't have the hoppy flavors I love about cascade hops. Some modest citrus flavors, orange primarily, with very modest bitterness. It's a touch on the sweet side with some caramel and honey notes. Subtle breadiness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and pretty smooth, but without the dryness or crispness of the simcoe single hop I had earlier.

I have to admit I'm really not wild about this one. It's a decent IPA but nothing special, and not as good as the Simcoe or Tomahawk, the latter of which is easily the best of the 3 that I have had. Would like to try a fresher bottle or on draft. Even though this is not past its best by date it just doesn't pack the hoppy flavors or aromas I expected.

A; Poured a deep orange color with good carbonation leaving a nice white head

S: Nose is sordove faint, some floral notes and grains

T: Has a subtle floral note, I was expecting more floral notes but a decent amount of hop oils in it. Toasted notes, nice malts backbone but not enough Cascade in this for me, not warrant the price! Hop bite mid to end.

M: hop bite present, good carbonation and a bittnerness and a light booze sting.

D: Ok but not worth the bucks!

This beer is an interesting exercise in tasting a single hop variety, but it's not really an incredible IPA on its own merits. That said, there's nothing wrong with the look. It's a dusky amber beer with an off-white head that leaves good lacing. The aroma is light caramel with a metallic note and the strong spruce-grapefruit rind flavor of the Cascade hop. The flavor is similar: a resiny, bitter and instantly recognizable hop flavor with a simple caramel malt backbone. I'm not usually one to say this, but I wish this IPA was a bit less bitter. It's not horribly biting, but the hop flavors get a bit lost in the bitterness. On the other hand, that might just be the flavor of this strong, American hop varietal.

12 oz bottle. Expensive but worth it for the education.

App: fluffy tan head over a cloudy amber body

Smell: very distinct. I would say the strongest aroma is over ripe strawberries. A bit of resin.

Taste. Subdued malt fades into Fruity hops. A bit of ruby red and a berry after taste. End with a firm, dry bitterness and a touch of caramel malt.

A: Pours a cloudy gold amber with an ample fluffy off-white head.

S: Somewhat muted, although this evokes homebrewing for me.

T: Overall, this is a clean IPA. The bittering backbone of Cascade comes across much more than any aroma hop characteristics. The finish is more bitter than some of the other hops sampled. If there is any real disappointment, it is only when matched up against some of the other single-hop varieties.

M: Medium bodied with lots of carbonation.

D: Again, on its own, this is a fine IPA and the only obstacle to drinkability is the price.

It's nice to see more Mikkeller beers here in Orange County. 330 ml bottle from Hi-Time, on to the beer:

Like my beer from earlier in the night, this beer fills up with a lot of foam into my glass. The color is bronzish orange, with the head on top staying on top thick and lush. The nose is hoppy. Well duh! More of a simpler hoopy aroma in a straightforward grass/pine mold.

Not to my surprise, it is hop dominant, with little malt showing up. Some hop juice most reminiscent of grass is the first thing to come to mind. Then comes more grass. And pine. There's a very subtle bread malt underneath all those hoppy flavors.

I'm glad to come across the single-hopped series from Mikkeller. I'm also glad they decided to put this beer in 330 ml bottles, because a larger format might be more than I'd like in a sitting. Worth a try.

Bottle: Poured a deep orangey color ale witha large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of citrus and bitter hops with a dry finish. Taste is somewhat astringent with some notes of citrus and a bitter finish. Body is quite full with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Interesting but kind of confirm that Cascade is a hops that is better used as part of a mix but too harsh by itself.

11.2oz bottle from the Potsdam IGA for 6$

Appearance - Hazy copper colour with a huge size fizzy beige coloured head. There is a low amount of carbonation and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes and there appears to be some particles floating around.

Smell - Malts, caramel, hops, grapefruit

Taste & Mouth - There is a higher amount of carbonation and I can taste hops, malts, and caramel. There is also some raisin/apple like flavours and some buttery notes with a touch of grapefruit. It ends with a malty sweet aftertaste with a bit of a lingering hop bitterness.

Overall - There's some sort of code on the cap of the bottle, but it doesn't seem to translate into any sort of bottling date. The fact that there is stuff floating in this one leads me to believe it is past it's prime. It basically tasted just like the Amarillo but with a touch more bitterness. I don't think I'll buy any more mikkeller ipa's until I can figure out their dating system.

Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a large wine glass.

A: Copper-orange in color with a white one-finger head that lingers for awhile and then eventually dissipates into a wispy lace.

S: Medium citrusy hoppy aroma. Not overwhelming but very pleasant to the nose

T: Clean and crisp hoppy citrusy flavor. The malt is surprising equal to or more than the hops which is a little unusual for an ipa. Dry smooth finish. Alcohol is present in the flavor but blends in nicely.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation

O: I like the concept of the single hopped beer. Cascade might not be the best option but I enjoyed this beer anyway. Looking forward to trying the others.

A- Amber with a milky head.

S- Bready and hoppy with a slight malt sweetness.

T- Hops run the same game across the board giving a very even experience sip to swallow. Not very intense.

M- Medium bodied, mild carbonation.

D- Not bad, but the cascades weren't flexing too much muscle on this beer. Very average IPA. At the price, it was a bit of a disappointment.
