7.0% abv, 330ml bottle into spiegelau IPA glass. consumed on october 22, 2014. best before june 19, 2016... yeah right. brewed with simcoe, cascade, and amarillo hops

a: semi-hazy rich amber, almost copper-ruby colour. 4 fingers of bone-hued head from a very aggressive pour. excellent sticky lacing going on. not quite green or gold

s: caramel malt, grapefruit, pineapple. slightly spicy, piney, and floral.. smells great, very balanced

t: malty with subdued fruit characteristics. bready and caramel-y up front, with pineapple and grapefruit following. malt carries on into mid-palate, pine introduces itself shyly, and the moderate bitterness shows itself as well. some floral notes. finishes dry and spicy

m: excellent stuff here. the flaked oats are working wonders i believe. medium-plus body with moderate carbonation makes this beer feel creamy and almost thick in the mouth. love it

o: not your typical modern day hop-forward IPA as the malt slightly edges out the hop presence, but it's still delicious

Appearance: cloudy orange/brown, like a real apple cider, tan head is fine with decent length, like sand

Aroma: excited already - unique spices, cinnamon, clove, five spice - feels like Fall; light caramel malt background, touch of banana

Taste & Mouthfeel: caramel malt and full, creamy body, with spice backing up the whole experience, and requisite hop bitterness (on the spice side naturally) finishing it off; but those five spice/cinnamon/clove flavours are the star of the show, matching the aroma and really linking all aspects of the beer; there's a woodiness too, almost like you'd find in root beer

Overall: a very unique IPA with loads of flavour and a solid malt and hop base, all of it well balanced; super interesting

Purchased at the LCBO for a steep $4.60 for a 330ml bottle. Served at 4deg C in a draught glass.

A- 4.25- Opens well and pours a nice head that stays for a minute or two. Unfiltered and almost brown

S- 4.25- Heavy malt, hops and caramel

T- 4.0- Pretty good. Rather heavy and malty good.

M- 3.75- Bit of a harsh bite here. Not an even beer. Very APA

O- 4.20- Pretty good beer but not very good once you factor in the price. Can buy just as good for $2.50/473ml can

Food Pairing

This pretty good APA went well with...... Pork in a mushroom cream sauce.

Enjoy!
