750 mL bottle with no freshness date obtained for $11.29

Appearance: Generous finger of head. Very dark chocolate brown, and quite opaque.

Smell: Whoa, the esters in this brew. I smell some substantial dark fruits and cherry, but the alcohol is very distracting.

Taste: I may not have refrigerated this long enough because the alcohol in this is just way too strong here. Maybe it would also help if it had aged and had time for the flavors to settle. But as it is, it's a bit unpalatable.... but I'm warming up to it as I drink more. The alcohol is still huge, but I can also now see the analogy to dark fruits and some of that does come into play nicely. There's also a lot of sugar; can definitely taste that candy syrup.

Mouth: Medium to Medium-high carbonation, good mouthfeel.

Overall/Drinkability: Overall the esters from this 10% ABV brew were too much for me. I love high gravity brews, but they usually don't taste like this.

A great addition to follow the Jackie Brown along my Mikkeller tour. The beer has a well-attenuated, ester-forward demeanor but lacks that 'it' that could make it compare favorably to Trappist versions.

The pour brings a wonderful raison-y colored mohogany, brown, Amber color with a purple-ish highlight here and there. Great lightly tanned head formation, very good retention, and a lot of lacing. A formitable Grand Cru look.

Deep aromas of sweeter bread malts (think fruitcake), along with strong esters of grapes, figs, dates, raisons, apples, cherries, and appricots decorate the nose quite nicely. Spices of corriander, orange peel, alcohol, white pepper, and to a lesser extent- cumin tickle the nose and give an intrigue to the beer going into taste.

Flavors are similar to the nose, favoring the esters above the malts and supressing the spiciness just a bit. Rum-soaked fruitcake lays the foundation for maltiness, esters, and ethynol profiles. Bready throughout but with heavy fruit overtones. Spices help to give complexity and variety to the beer in the absence of meaningful hop flavor.

The body might be where this beer separates from traditional Belgian varieties. Medium fullness and roundness, where the authentic ones are soundly full and robust. Still, this beer finishes quite dry, medium malty, medium on bitterness and bite, and medium on alcohol. Maybe too timid? But then we've seen American versions that throw caution to the wind and instead of increasing the intrigue, we create a mess of a beer. I think this beer is on the right track, but not quite reaching its intended destination.

Poured into my Corsendonk Christmas Ale glass, a very nice cloudy grapey color, nice carbonation, nice little fizzy light tan head, with some sticky lacing left behind. The nose is malty, with lots of grapes, raisins, figs, plums, with some caramel. The taste is sweet, malty, with lots of dark fruits. Medium body, the ABV is hidden very well for the brew. Drinkable, this is a tasty brew.

Collaboration. Pours a dark burgundy color with a rudy red hue through out. Somewhat cloudy but a bit of chill haze. A soft white head with good retention and lacing but did dissipate through the tasting.

The nose has some good and some bad notes. There is a great bready mixed with a crystal malt aroma. Some melanodian almost Special B-esk malt aroma. Noticeable fig and raisin notes as well, with a hint of banana and cloves. A light plum note as well. Some butyric aromas are really off setting and leave a dirty drains type or image. Dank. On the back end there is a light black strap molasses note as well, that has the minerally off aroma that is just a big deterrent for me.

The taste is similar. Great malt notes with a stronger crystal and caramel malt notes. Some Belgian grainy flavors with a light bready/biscuit thing. Some yeasty notes but backs off versus the nose. The same off butyric notes are present in the taste. Really hard getting past this dank flavor. Some herbal and ester notes in the finish as well.

Moderate body with good carbonation. Overall really hard to get past the dank notes. Surprised this isn't rated lower.

Pours a very dark brown in color with ruby highlights. Just the slightest of heads forming on the pour.
Smell is some belgian yeast, but the smell is dominated by rich, ripe dark fruits. Mostly plum and what seems to be black cherries as well. Very fruity.
Taste is even more of the dark fruit onslaught. Really encompasses most of the beer. Tends to get a little bitter in the middle. Still pretty full and enjoyable. Decent beer. I feel it needed something to detract from the dominant fruit flavor.

Pours a straight dark brown color that is nearly opaque. Small head of loose, tan foam forms, then dissipates rather quickly. Lacing is clumpy and rather sticky.

Smell is like a fresh loaf of sweet fruit bread, drizzled with rum sauce. Huge bready/yeasty notes. Big notes of dark plums and cherries. Mild notes of semisweet chocolate. Belgian candi sugars.
It took a minute to identify a certain element of the smell, but it's almond paste (marzipan).
The nose is quite enticing.

Wow, did that nose ever set me up for disappointment. The flavors fall completely flat here. The yeastiness overpowers everything else, but not in the good way, like a tripel or something. It's just almost all that there is, to this one. It's like a big chunk of bread, dipped in caramel sauce which has some dark fruits floating in it. Huge bready flavor, light caramel sweetness and a hint of dark fruits, that you wish were more prominent.

Medium body, which is also a sort of letdown. This style should be big, thick and creamy. This one is smooth, but not really creamy, at all. Low level of carbonation kills the body on this one.

Yeah, it's drinkable, but I won't be rushing to try to track down another bottle anytime soon. I'd love to try it again, don't get me wrong. It just won't be high on my list of future aquisitions. If I see it, I'll give it another shot.
Mikkeller, you've let me down.

A - Poured from the 750ml bottle a very dark brown with a couple of centimetres of light tan head that falls away very fairly quickly.
S - Dark fruits and spicy Belgian yeast notes.
T - Dark fruit, some caramel malt, a hint of dark chocolate and spicy esters. A herbal hop character.
M - Medium bodied, medium to high carbonation.
D - A 10% beer that is rather lacking in the body & complexity that I'd expect from a Quad. Quite drinkable but probably my least favourite from this brewery and certainly not a great example of the style.

750ml bottle. Synthetic cork stamped 07/04/14.

Poured a medium brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of dark fruits, caramel, some yeast, a little woody, and some chocolate. Tastes of dark fruits, lighter yeast, chocolate, caramel, and a little bready. Light to medium alcohol burn that creeps up a few seconds after I drank (but overall well hidden).

Nice two finger, but it dissipates very quickly. Dark brown with some cherry highlights. Can't see any bubbles, but you can feel them on the tongue. Mild roasted malts and heavy tastd malts that have an undeniable sugary sweet aroma. The taste starts with Light roasted and candy syrup. The middle gets more balance with the toasted roasted malt flavors. The yeast adds more of a fruity, cake flavor. Pretty complex yeast flavors and very malty sweet. Hints of light chocolate with some earthy hints of hops.

Poured from a 750 ml corked bottle into a Chimay tulip glass. Not much pop on the cork, and not much head on the pour. I sure hope I didn't get a bad bottle.

The appearance is a dark brown with hints of crimson... what little head there was was a tannish color, but didn't last long.

A smell that brings about what I'd expect from a Belgian Quad, a little malt, a definite alcohol presence, a lot of fruit in the aroma. Very nice aroma.

The taste is more of the same, no surprises. Very well balanced but nothing that blows you away either. Fantastic mouthfeel, the carbonation is present despite the fears that I had a flat bottle.

Hard to give it more than a 4.0 on the drinkability... the alcohol presence is there and the taste is pretty strong, but I'm sure going to enjoy wiping out this 750ml of beer.

A corked and caged 750 mL bottle.

A: The quad is a dark chocolate syrup brown, very viscous with a mildly off-white head that laces all around the mouth of the glass.

S: Belgian chocolate and raisins, lots of dark aromas, drink the nose. The yeast strain screams 'Trappist' with a forboding complexity that I needed a while to place.

T: The taste is as compelling as the nose, a Trappist clone that hits all the right notes. Dark alefruits, driven by yeasty critters and an overabundance of candi sugars. Lots of raisin flavors here. A pleasant hop aftertaste settles down the sweetness.

M: The mouthfeel is very dark, loaded with rich fruit and sweet elements. The yeast has put in overtime in this beer.

D: At 10%, this is a sipping beer. I've enjoyed it over the past hour and a half and look forward to another hour.

Pours a muddy chocolate brown into a tulip with a one finger tan head, which quickly dissipates into larger bubbles with some mild lacing.

Nose has some belgian candy sugar sweetness, chocolatey and earthy with some mild sour notes. Metallic.

Medium bodied, medium to high carbonation that adds a little kick as it hits your tongue. Carbonation becomes creamy as it settles and goes down your throat, though the bitter hops dry out the overall finish.

Taste is malty and sweet (dark candy sugar) with a little bitter hop kick in the back end. Raisin/dark fruit throughout. Sour up front and a bit of chocolate and metal in the residual linger.

Drinkability is good. The high carbonation and dry finish make it crisp and refreshing and keeps you coming back.

Overall a good interpretation of the style. Would definitely drink this again. It is slightly thin in the mouthfeel for a quad, which keeps the overall impact and taste subdued but seems to increase the drinkability. I'm torn between this being a negative factor (less complex taste) or a positive one (increased drinkability and increased refreshment). Without overanalyzing, I find myself quite enjoying this brew.

Pours a super cloudy brown color, with a huge off-white head. Almost completely opaque, golden around the edges when you hold it to the light. Lacing is thick and chunky, and coats the entire glass.

Smell is unbelievable. Tons of chocolate, dark fruit, and malted milk balls. Very complex, without a Belgian edge. Sweet, but not overpowering.

Taste is sour malt at first, with good deal of alcohol. The flavor is a little thin in the middle, with a decently bitter finish. Not what the smell would lead you to believe.

Mouthfeel is good, creamy but with tart carbonation.

Drinkability is fine, but it's a little disappointing.

Overall, not worth the $14.99 I paid for the bottle.

The beer pours a dark brown color with very good head retention and fair lacing. On the the nose I get an attactive aroma of chocolate and brown sugar, with a hint of underlying spice. The flavors on the palate almost completely replicate the nose, with a moderate amount of sweetness. Mouthfeel is surprisingly light given the abv., though it's still what I would call medium bodied. The alcohol is very well disguised in this beer, though I confess I noticed it more and more as I went along.

Not one of my favorite beers from Mikkeller, but still pretty solid. Would probably not order it again, but was glad to have the opportunity to sample it.

Sold as "Monk's Elexir" in Europe.

The colour is dark brown-red, the liquid clear. The beige compact head is finger thick.

The smell is mild. I noted some marzipan, raisins and beeswax.

The taste is dry and surprisingly light. Raisins, yeast and some sweetness. The body is low. The long aftertaste is light and fresh with notes of Coca Cola, nuts, raw beef and a hint of yeast.

The carbonation is strong; the small bubbles are sharp in the mouth. The liquid is mid-smooth.

A strong Belgian-style beer without any traces of alcohol. But there is not much of anything else init either.

A - No pop from the cork, but no worries. Nice, but small, head reduces to ring. Very little sticky lacing and some cascading walls of bubbles from the rim edge. Kind of a murky, flat brown.

S - Dark fruit, brown sugar.

T - Pumpernickel bread, cooked dark fruits, brown sugar and a bit of cocoa at finish.

M - Medium body, maybe too carbed for me, good balance.

D - Alcohol isn't obvious, and flavors are not sledgehammers. For the style, pretty drinkable.

Bottle into chalice.

Pours a murky brown, dark, with a fluffy off-white head that settles quickly into a thin creamy cap.

Nose is dark fruit and brown sugar, with some yeast coming through as well.

Taste is light. Some doughy brown sugar up front, lots and lots of dark fruit/raisins. Hint of cocoa. Very light, earthy bitterness towards the finish. Almost no alcohol in taste, but a bit spicy and warming on the finish. Lacks depth and complexity for the size of the beer. On the flip side, still quite flavorful, and very drinkable for a 10% beer.

Carbonation is light, delicate, a bit fluffy, medium bodied.

Pours a slightly hazy dark brown with beautiful ruby highlights when held to light. Huge fluffy off white head persists forever. Smells of dark fruits, brown sugar, spicy yeast, and a touch of alcohol. Taste is very nice with lots of dark fruits, spices, sweet malts, maybe a touch of alcohol. Mouthfeel is creamy and a little syrupy, body is full, carbonation is crisp but not overpowering. I liked this one a lot.

Poured from a corked, caged, and silver foil wrapped 750ml bottle into two St. Bernardus goblets. Thanks to HeatherAnn for the assist!

A: Pours a dark brown, very cola-like, with a small light-khaki head that leaves a little bit of spotty lace.

S: Aromas of caramel, toffee, toasted nuts, dark fruit, and cola-nut.

T: See above. Also tasted were spices, dark chocolate, white pepper, roasted nut, spicy figs & raisins, and toasty malt.

M: Medium bodied, slick and peppery, with a nice bit of dryness at the finish.

D: This one shows off barely a trace of its' 10%. Goes down far too easy!

I poured this from a 750ml bottle, corked and caged with silver foil on top. Huge thanks to BelgianBeerGal, who gave me this as an extra in a trade. The beer was dark murky brown with a thick tan foam, not much lace. The smell is just about perfect, this has a very similar aroma to Westvleteren 12. Dark fruits (plums, figs, etc) with delicious esters and some alcohol. The taste is nearly as good, although I taste some spice (maybe coriander) that I didn't detect in the aroma. The body is thick and coating, the flavor lasts a long time. Absolutely recommended.

smell is of dark fruits, malt, slight cocoa in the back, some coffee.

taste is very nice, not overpowering, prunes, raisins, purple grapes, touch of sweetness, some malt, and a touch of coffee, aftertaste is thick on the tongue.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a Chimay glass. Bottle is corked & caged. Cork has 07/04/14 printed on it. Cork came out with a decent pop.

Pours a deep dark mahogany brownish-black color. About a finger of tan head was produced. The head slowly settled to a thin layer. Decent retention and lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, biscuit, dark fruit (raisin, fig, date, plum), brown sugar, and a touch of alcohol.

The first sip is quite tasty. Flavors of sweet malt, candied sugar, raisin, fig, and chocolate. After that comes the familiar Belgian yeasty bread taste. The flavor is a bit heavy on the fruit taste, and has a strong alcohol taste to it.

Feel is very nice. Smooth and creamy yet well-carbonated. No lingering aftertaste. Some warming from the alcohol. Drinkability is decent. The alcohol is definitely noticeable.

Overall, a pretty good Quad. Might be a bit much for one person though, I recommend splitting with a friend or two.

750ml foiled champagne bottle (bottle stamped 07/04/11), Monk's Brew is a murky chestnut with a small off-white head that quickly subsides to a large bubbled collar that leaves very light lace.

Smell is very grape like, even as it warms, I really dont' get more then grape soda, perhaps a bit less sweet malt. It's appealing, but not necessarily as beer, or even a really fruity quad. While I really dig it, it seems way to simple and one dimensional. Or maybe I'm being to much of a beer snob? Fanta grape is one of my all time favorite soda's (2nd to Cherokee Red), but not necessarily what I look for in quad's, or any beer for that matter.

Taste is also very heavy on the grape fruitiness, malt/sugar/esters. Like the nose, it's kool-aide with a bit of spiciness to remind you it's beer, but nevertheless very unusual, if quite tasty. Still, it's a bit too much, and lacking depth, even after at least a few month's in my cellar.

Mouthfeel is very fully carbonated, lush.

Drinkability is ok, I always expect too much from the De Proef brewed Mikkeller's, but they never really measure up, and this one is no exception. While it's pretty tasty, it seems like all caramelized sugar and esters, which is fine, if not that sophisticated. IIRC, the price isn't helping the score either. The bottom line is it took a long while to work through, and I wasn't carving another, ever.

Jason's bottle from Julio's. Hit the bullseye on the style. Black, lots of lace. A mouthfeel of yeast, a meal of it. A good amount of sourish brown flavour here. Sugar, toffee. Noting a feast of yeast aroma, the drinkability is very good for my favourite style.
