Pours pitch black color with bubbles building up to a cascading 2 finger creamy brown head that was packed with bubbles and faded very slowly, leaving great lacing coating the sides and rings as it went down. Very sticky lace that left an impressive residue in its wake.

Smells of fresh ground coffee, baker’s chocolate, cocoa powder, vanilla beans, molasses, dark fruit, light herbs, burnt grains and charred wood. Rich toasty stout nose that’s heavy on coffee and chocolate and quite nice to inhale with zero scent of the high alcohol level.

Tastes of chocolate like dark chocolate bar, bakers chocolate, cocoa powder, then molasses, vanilla, espresso, coffee grinds like a dark Kona coffee blend, roasted nuts, charred wood, caramel/toffee, smoked malts and mild booze like dark rum or bourbon; very earthy with oaky notes, burnt cedar wood, mild black licorice, lemon zest, more coffee beans and more chocolate like milk chocolate or hot fudge from Carvel. There is a slight bitterness that seems to be from the coffee at first, but then seems to lean towards herbal and hoppy which adds a slight degree of balance to this delicious flavor that gets better as it warms. The amount of complexities for a flavor that basically stays between robust coffee and chocolate is a very impressive use of malt and shows the Mikkeller brewing mastery again.

Mouthfeel is very thick and chewy, with mild carbonation, a thick, dense body, and a nice bitterness that trails off with a coffee and chocolate mix sweetness that makes this slow sipper a brew that you want to swish around in your mouth to prolong the incredible flavor.

I am a huge coffee stout fan and I sat on this beer for 6 months after purchasing it and it was amazing. I keep reading that this beer was made with civet cat coffee/dung, which makes for the most expensive coffee (Vietnamese Ca Phen Chon coffee), and that doesn’t bother me one bit as this was a fantastic beer. Even if it was expensive and made from the droppings of civet cats (tasty cat shit I guess?), it’s a damn fine beer that I highly recommend and I will seek out again.

11.2 oz bottle, poured into a snifter at room temperature.

A: Pours a level of black that should probably emit Hawking radiation, while forming a very thin, very dark brown head that dissipates quickly and leaves no trace at all - no cap, no ring, maybe a couple stray bubbles temporarily along the sides of the glass. In other words, nothing escapes it. I'm guessing it's somewhat high gravity. (These jokes should all go under one of Mikkeller's other beers, but they fit better with the appearance of this one.)

S: The aroma, which somehow manages to escape the event horizon of the beer surface, strikes up front as sweet with dark fruitiness throughout. Both roasted chocolate malt and sweeter notes are present, as one would expect from an oatmeal stout. Fruity notes include plums, figs, and currants. Despite one of the main ingredients, I detect no litterbox odors - perhaps those simply aren't shunted away from the singularity during dilation. Oddly enough, I get little to no coffee odor as well.

T: Unexpectedly, this beer did not tear my tongue apart and then crush it into an infinitesimally tiny ball of matter, so that's a plus. Toffee and chocolate malts strike up front, joined shortly by a quick rush of more fruity notes ranging from plum to currant. As the beer moves along the palate, an earthy, burnt bitter flavor swirls in to conceal the rest, which in turn yields to an almost pure coffee taste at the finish. A pleasant roasted coffee aftertaste lingers well after the swallow, markedly less bitter than any other coffee I have tasted aside from pure Kona coffee in Kailua-Kona itself.

M: Smooth and silken, with scarcely any carbonation to be found nor tasted - literally just enough to leave the beer not feeling dead and lifeless in the mouth. It's not the heaviest oatmeal stout I've ever tasted, which is surprising given the amount of mass it should have, but it compares decently to others in the style.

O: Eminently drinkable, this hides its ABV well behind a wall of shifting flavor complexity. I would consider buying again. One could say it has a powerful attractive force. All right, I'll knock off the lame black hole jokes. Suffice it to say, despite being made with crap, this is far from a crappy beer.

Beer for breakfast! Very dark and delicious! Pretty weird that it's made from something pooped out of a weird animal's butt. Drank this by the morning campfire while my coffee water was heating up. Rad beer.
