I like most of what Mikkeller has to offer, but in the words of my Best Man, who split the bottle with me, this tastes like drinking a barnyard.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a standard white wine glass. Pours golden and maybe a little cloudy with a quarter inch of head. I don't mind a tad bit of funk, but this smells like a bath towel that's gone for a few weeks without being laundered.

I found nothing redeeming on the taste. The beer is so dry it actually made me thirstier, and I would have guzzled anything to get the funk out of my mouth. It was like I was drinking a dirty sock. Despite the beer's dryness, it left an oily feeling on my tongue that made me feel like I needed a shower, in addition to a good teeth-brushing.

I strongly recommend Mikkeller's Simcoe Single Hop IPA, the Beer Geek Breakfast Stout, and the three or four other beers of theirs that I've tried. But I can't in good conscience recommend the It's Alright. Because it decidedly is not.

Appearance: Crystal clear light yellow, dissipating white head. OK Lacing (4.00)

Aroma: Moderate-to-high brett funk aromatics of pickles horse blanket (4.00)

Flavor: Much less pronounced brett flavor, leans towards a watery-sulfury yeast character. Really falls flat (3.5)

Mouthfeel: Dissipating, well carbonated, light bodied (3.75)

Overall: It's Alright. (3.6)

Pours a pale yellow colour with weird sponge-like cloud just sitting spirally in the body. Head is white and modest - unimpressive is probably a better word - and sinks quickly, leaving some nice sticky lace around, but not much head left. Looks a little bit boring, but I think the lace saves it.

Nose is a big funky affair, with a large number of quite "off" flavours vying for attention. Big smell of sweaty feet, with hints of lemon, grapefruit and cheese providing some backup that kind of saves it from smelling literally "off". There is a slight maltiness lurking as well, but hidden behind the funky front. Pretty sure I dislike this, but it's unique enough that I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Tastes insanely funky. Big hit of strong, pongy brie hits you at the start and continues onto the mid. Very wild, with hints of rotting wood, leather, sweat and a big mushroom/umami kind of flavour as well. There is a slight sweetness but it's rendered quite tangy, and is present only on the front, before being throttled quite mercilessly by that huge funk. Finish is savoury and takes you right into the heart of funkytown. This is unlike anything I've ever had. It's offensive, but has lots of character and uniqueness one wants to like it.

Nice amount of texture on the feel with a perfectly fine body, it's certainly passable as far as mouthfeel goes.

Overall this beer is basically like having a child that has a triple whammy of Asperger's, Tourette's and Downe's syndromes, so it comes across as downright offensive and unlikeable, but it's so 'different' you kind of feel like it was put here to test your limits and is therefore a blessing in disguise. But I still can't really love it like I love my elder son, Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye.

Poured from an 11.2oz bottle into a DT tulip.

Cap dated: 22/10/12

A: Pours a beautiful, cloudy, light-orange/straw color with a creamy, one-finger, bright-white cap of foam. The head is fed by some pretty active carbonation and eventually falls to a creamy layer of skim with a thick and unbreakable ring. Sagging ropes of lace are left behind.

S: Catching a very nice aroma of funk and tart fruit. As it was pouring I noticed the aroma of sour green apples. Also caught some hints of toasted malt, sour berry, wildflowers, and perfume-y hops.

T: I took a sip from the glass when about 3/4 of the bottle had been poured and I tasted the oddest flavor. Almost like heavily toasted grains mixed with damp tree bark. Uh oh. I noticed that there was a decent layer of sediment in the bottom of the bottle so I swirled it around and dumped it in. Make sure you do this. It made all of the difference in the world. The beer really opened up! Sour fruit and funk mix it up with flavors of toasted malt, brett, sodden acorns, oak, perfumed hops, prairie grass, and white pepper.

M: Pretty dry and a little chalkier than I would've liked but it has very nice levels of sour, pepper, and stickiness.

D: A very interesting beer. By all means, do not leave any sediment in the bottle. Put all of it in your glass. Otherwise you'll be cheating yourself.

A - Pours with a small, one finger head of white foam on top of a clear, golden body. The foam settles quickly and leaves little lace.

S - Fruity, sour grape aroma with some lactic acid and wheat. A light aroma of herbal hops blends into the sour malt. Mostly lactic acid with little funk.

T - Some tart, bready malt up front with light funk. Some lactic acid in the middle with dry fruit notes of white grapes and a hint of pineapple. Finishes with cheese notes of musty wild yeast and dry grapes that blend into light, herbal hops and nutty malt.

M - Medium body, moderately high carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - Reasonably drinkable, this is a mild sour ale with a good dose of herbal hop character and a minimum of funk. I don't understand the reviews that imply that this is an over the top, bathroom floor flavored beer. Most of the wild character is lactic, with very little real funk. It has a very champagne like character that is more about light, dry fruit than wild, cheesy funk. Worth drinking, but I wouldn't go out of my way to have another bottle. Some people seem to think that it is over the top funky, but I would say that it is, if anything, too mild in terms of funk.

A - very pale yellow, hazy golden, with a frothy fizzy big white head, lots of swift carbonation spirals up

S - i get big grapes on the aroma, dry champagne or muscat grapes, a sweetness as well, maybe like a clover or wild honey, some other fruits back up the aroma, a slight citrusy lemon aroma, some granny smith apple, but that fruit amalgamation dominates the aroma

T - a cloying fruitiness at first that fades immediately into a yeasty/breadiness with a metallic twinge that gets a bit bland pretty rapidly, after the aroma i didnt understand the C+ overall rating, now i do

M&D - dry and fizzy on the palate, not especially smooth, a bit of a disappointment after such a nice aroma, not horrible but i wouldnt buy this again

Poured into a Sam Adams 12oz tulip style pint. No date, cap says '5101111', though.

A: Woah, ferociously carbonated, began to foam over as soon as I opened the bottle. Head is white and fluffy, good retention (this glass has an etch on the bottom, so the bubbles are going wild. Body is pale straw color.

S: Smells heavily of Belgian yeast, very herbal, floral; some noble hops as well...very nice.

T: Taste is less than whelming, especially after smelling the beer. Front of this beer is fairly bland. There is a noble hop finish along with a mild sweetness. Nothing off putting, but needs more flavor. I'm not catching much brett character.

M: High carbonation works fine here.

D: Overall this would be acceptable as a cheap summer beer, but it's not priced that way.

A - Pours a clear copper colour with an off white head that reduces quickly to a film

S - Small apple and pine

T - Up front some nice grains and small hop the finish is a little dry.

M - Light to medium body

O - This beer syas nothing spectacular. There are better offerings from Mikkeler, although it would make a decent session beer.

Yikes! This puts the "pale" in pale ale. Lighter than the average straw of most macro lagers and the head and feeding carbonation is distressingly soda-ish. At least the clarity is impressive.

I think this is actually a really fun nose. Yes, I just used the word "fun" when describing aroma. Farmhouse funk, strawberries and hay all hit my senses. Good stuff.

Wow! This manages to combine the funky, brett characteristics of a saison/wild ale with a huge, biscuity malt body. The malt actually lingers on well after that tartness has dissipated. The finish is Godly in its cleanliness.

Mouthfeel is appropriately sprightly and goes down easy. This is in that class with Hennepin as exceptionally drinkable saisons. Don't really understand the low ratings for this unless the "Belgian Pale Ale" tag this site has bizarrely applied to this beer is driving said scores. Label reads "wild ale" and it tastes like one.

A: The beer is slightly hazy golden yellow in color and has a light to moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a two finger high off white head that died down but consistently left a thin head covering the surface.
S: There are light to moderate aromas of spicy hops and funkiness from the brettanomyces yeast in the nose.
T: Like the smell, spiciness from the hops stands out in the overall taste, although these aren’t too strong. There is a mild amount of associated hop bitterness and some notes of sourness in the finish.
M: It feels light-bodied and crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a moderate amount of dryness from start to finish.
O: The sourness might seem to be a bit out of this style, but it definitely adds some uniqueness to the smell and taste. It’s definitely a lot easier to drink this beer compared to a gueuze or wild ale.

A - A golden colored brew with good clarity and thick white cap w/ visible carbonation

S - The smell is slightly off putting and intriguing at the same time - like funky cheese w/ slight fruit edge kind of horsey and floral juxtoposition

M - A mildly funky and slightly acidic taste w/ mild bitterness and high carbonation with slight sweet edge

T - The taste is both pear and funk w/ a hint of vegetal hop and cheesy creamy yeast flavors w/ a mild malt foundation, the tartness and funk of the yeast seems to dominate the fruity aspects and hop flavors

D - A beer I was glad to try and had repeat tastes of but not one worth seeking out IMO, it is kind of a once and done beer for me.

part of the epicness that was the halloween weekend of beer. the last few nights have kicked my ass in every way, but i got to try a bunch of goodies that have long haunted me. served chilled and poured into a 8 ounce taster, this one was consumed on 10/30/2010.

this one poured into the glass a very fizzy and very active yellow color. a big head of white caps the top of the glass and reaches a height of around two inches before settling down with some decent lacing around the edges of the glass.

the look was about the only redeeming quality however as the first hints of aroma leave me struggling to understand what this is. light lemon, loads of musky grain and bready notes, a mess. wet grass and hay start coming through now and the over impression i get is just off. decent feel albeit way too light for any style. the flavor is just not there. its an odd mix of off color grains, odd touches of light citrus and wet hay like tartness that really just goes nowhere.

overall i am not sure what the attempt here was at, but pretty sure it did not work as planned.

A - Poured a slightly hazy golden yellow with lots of carbonation bubbles racing to the top. A centimetre of white head which quickly falls to a thin whisp.
S - The smell is dominated by stong funky barnyard brett aroma along with some lemon sourness & a very faint grainy note.
T - Again quite dominated by the brett also with a lemon sourness and a faint grain touch. Bit of a herbal and floral hop note, but not much.
M - Light bodied, fairly high carbonation.
D - Not horrible but certainly not something to rush back into. Just not my thing.

Aroma is strong, crisp and malty with a fruity undertone. It pours a clear yellow with an average white head. Flavor is mainly malty and has some fruit flavor, mainly apple and banana, as well as a hint of hoppy bitterness. Texture is a bit on the thin side but still fizzy and lively. Not Mikkeller’s best, but, well, it’s alright. ;)

Pours a slightly hazy gold color with a nice frothy white head. Aroma is lemons, sweet grain, and a lot of phenolic funk that tends toward plastic/bandaid but not too bad. Flavor is pretty much all brett funk. Lots of odd chemical notes including chlorine and phenols. Lacks depth and complexity. This is a wild ale without the ale part. No fruitiness, no tartness, no real flavors other than brett funk. Overcarbonated and astringent mouthfeel. While this isn't as offensive to me as it was some of the other reviewers, it totally misses the mark.

11.2 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a hazy dark yellow, very fizzy head.

S: Very Orvalian smell, pale bread malt, more Brett than Orval. Barnyard, fermented oranges.

T: Interesting nutty note right off the bat. Heavy barnyard, funky Brett notes, cider vinegar, with tart lemon and orange. Light acid. Nice fruity character throughout. Intriguing finish of cheese and bitter hops.

M: Abrupt finish, very light-bodied overall, very dry, mild acidity.

D: Kind of like a wild ale light; the flavours are still very good. I enjoyed it. Not as complex as or full-flavoured as Orval, but certainly in that style.

Smells ... weird. Some faint funk. A weird medicinal overtone. This smells bad. Like a rancid wild, a beer that's actually spoiled, not a well orchestrated souring.

Taste is ... bad. Not alright, at all. Wow. This is a drainpour from the word go. Awful, soapy lemon, thin, watery and medicinal vinegar ... awful bad yeasty funk. Thin, watery once bubbling dies down.

Just really bad.

Pours a hazy straw-yellow with a nice-looking (if not too impressive in size) white head.

Smell: skunky, stinky cheese; various barnyard smells... not appetizing. Not even for a wild ale.

Tastes worse than it smells. One sip and I'm contemplating a drain pour just to save myself the pain of finishing this one off. Just a whole bunch of flavors that are individually abrasive and when taken altogether are almost unbearable. Nail polish remover is added to the mix of crap listed in the smell section. In certain beers, I really enjoy some of these attributes, but this beer just doesn't get anything right.

11.2 ounce bottle purchased from the Pizza Port Bottle Shop a few weeks ago for six dollars, poure dinto my Tripel Karmeliet tulip glass tonight, light yellow color with some golden orange, 1 1/2 inch foamy white head that goes away quickly, minimal lacing to go along with weak retention, aroma has a good amount of brettanomyces, floral accents, perfumey hops, light malts, mild citrus, and some honey, flavor starts off crisp but dry, toasted malts and hops are in the middle with a bitterness that does not seem to come from the yeast finish is also dry and can barely tell any brett is there flavor wise, some cardboard in the finish later on, by the end sourdough bread is quite prominent, light tasting but flavors seem to evolve, bitter, toasted, and surprisingly very dry mouthfeel, light to medium bodied, tons of carbonation, taste lingers well for its style, could drink more of this than just the small bottle, low in alcohol and none in the taste, dryness would get to me after awhile though, did not know what to expect from this one, bought because it said wild ale on it, might drink again, do not think it will cellar very well as it is very low in alcohol and the brett character seems a little light, worth trying

Picked up an 11.2 oz single from Liquor Max in Loveland, CO. Around $5.

A: Light gold, with a stark white head, excellent carbonation moving around inside the beer. Slightly hazy. Very little head retention. No lacing to speak of.

S: Barnyard funk, lemons, gauze/medicinal qualities, tons of bret smells going on, a faint hint of light pale malts, not a whole lot though, really really strong the bret though. Funkay!

T: Wow, cereal malts, cooked corn, tastes like a lot of cheap macros. This is not good. Almost no sourness, tastes a lot like straw. Huge cereal malt profile, no hops at all. This is not impressive, not worth the money, and in fact is not "alright"

M: Thin, crisp, quite carbonated. Extremely dry.

D: Meh...this was struggle, I've choked down worse stuff, but this was not good. Huge disappointment, I do not recommend this to others.

this brew pours up a murky pale yellow color with a decent white head. Whoa! The smell! I literally smell diarrhea! It fades away as the beer warms up, but I also get brett, honey, tart citric acids, earth, hay, funk. The taste is nothing like the aroma! copper, cork, wood, brett, straw, a pencil eraser, very subtle tartness and more so mild, very dry, medium bodied, medium carbo. A VERY interesting beer!

I hate it when I excitedly grab a new bottle off of the shelf only to get home and remember the shitty reviews I had already read about the beer. Oh well. I should have given JTH 3/4ths of the bottle.

Lackluster looking pale yellow with an obnoxious head in Duvel tulip.

Reeks of urine or urinal cake (maybe both). A little repulsive. Maybe a little citrus funk too.

Taste is lackluster. A little funk from Brett but not much body to carry it. Reminds me of a really weak attempt at a Berliner Weiss. Dry, pissy finish. Not a whole lot going on.

Mouthfeel is thin and watery.

After a few evaluative sips, I chugged the remainder of my 5 oz without spitting it out.

Disappointing to say the least.

my very first mikkeller!!!
pours a golden hued, semi-topped liquid.
smell is Belgian yeast, typical Belgian ale aroma.
taste is.... Belgian yeast.... candied sugars.... eh, it's alright....
overall.... it's alright.... typical Belgian flavored ale. so, if you click to all the beers mikkeller brews, then sort on the ratings, it's. like, THE LOWEST rated brew from them.... I guess it can only go up from here??
it wasn't bad. my 2 year love affair with Belgians is over. just way too rich. I still respect them all, but the ol' standby germans are particularly appreciated at this point although ive been bumping around with several other different things. still, I get the mikkeller concept. interesting.... cheers!
