holy hell.

this beer smells good, initially.. just like you'd want a crisp, bretty, pale golden sour to smell. that's where the honeymoon ends with this selection.

flavor begins with stale popcorn notes and transitions quickly to burnt plastic. some funk is perceptible, but only between dry heaves. the aftertaste is that of honey-tinged water. body is thin, and eventually an unpleasant bitterness builds on the tongue.

a $5 drainpour. avoid at all costs.

Bottle into Sam Adams Lager glass.

Pours a hazy pale straw, with lots of effervescence and a big, fluffy whit head that doesn't go away.

Nose has some light citrus tartness, along with some gentle barnyard coming through as well. Nothing overwhelming, but appealing.

Taste is funky barnyard, some more light tart citrus, and then comes along a huge, completely bizarre note of straight up leathery weirdness. Almost biscuity and mustardy. Not at all a good thing - totally off. The exhale won't go away - it follows you around. So, half of the flavor is great, then half is just unpleasantly weird.

Mouthfeel is nice, actually - light bodied, spritzy carbonation. Not bad at all.

Drinkability is hindered by the fact that I was cringing away from the beer after that first weird leathery burst. Eh.

Had this courtesy of brickstoredave - much obliged!

Pours a clear straw color with a thin white head. The head dissipates fairly quickly into a wispy layer on top leaving light lacing.

Smells of tart and slightly sweet fruits - apples and citrus, along with a good amount of barnyard funk.

Tastes similar to how it smells, but only for a second. Tart and sweet fruit flavors kick things off, but then a funky, and not in the good way, flavor takes over - almost a buttery English Pale flavor. A very odd flavor profile.

Mouthfeel is good - it's got a decent thickness with active carbonation.

Drinkability is alright. It's not hard to drink at first, but the weird flavors begin wearing on me and I'm not sure I could drink an entire bottle.

Overall this was a strange beer - I'm unsure as to whether or not Mikkeller was going for those strange flavors, but if they were it didn't turn out very well.

Consumed on 2/21/09

Poured a golden color with no head. Aroma is funk and tartness through and through. Taste is...awful! At first, it seems great and then it hits you - like a saddle in the mouth. Leather, leather, and more leather; I almost puked. Had to finish off that gulp with a swig of bacardi sitting on my counter. Do not recommend this one to anyone unless you're a leather head.

I'm hoping that this is just a bad bottle as my review is much lower than the average!

A: Poured from a bottle to a tulip glass. Had a yellowish color and a somewhat cloudy consistency. There was a thin head and some OK lacing.

S: This beer had a weird aroma of yeast, apples and something oddly sour.

T: The taste is something very difficult to describe. It has apples and yeast up front and a corn-like funkiness in the finish. It's very, very odd.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a slick, almost oily finish. Medium-bodied.

D: While this beer had some good qualities, I don't know if I would try it again. Not bad, just a little strange.

Poured from an 11.2oz bottle into a DT tulip.

Cap dated: 22/10/12

A: Pours a beautiful, cloudy, light-orange/straw color with a creamy, one-finger, bright-white cap of foam. The head is fed by some pretty active carbonation and eventually falls to a creamy layer of skim with a thick and unbreakable ring. Sagging ropes of lace are left behind.

S: Catching a very nice aroma of funk and tart fruit. As it was pouring I noticed the aroma of sour green apples. Also caught some hints of toasted malt, sour berry, wildflowers, and perfume-y hops.

T: I took a sip from the glass when about 3/4 of the bottle had been poured and I tasted the oddest flavor. Almost like heavily toasted grains mixed with damp tree bark. Uh oh. I noticed that there was a decent layer of sediment in the bottom of the bottle so I swirled it around and dumped it in. Make sure you do this. It made all of the difference in the world. The beer really opened up! Sour fruit and funk mix it up with flavors of toasted malt, brett, sodden acorns, oak, perfumed hops, prairie grass, and white pepper.

M: Pretty dry and a little chalkier than I would've liked but it has very nice levels of sour, pepper, and stickiness.

D: A very interesting beer. By all means, do not leave any sediment in the bottle. Put all of it in your glass. Otherwise you'll be cheating yourself.

Pours out a pale yellow straw color with almost no head, though I can visibly see bubbles rising and floating through the beer. Of course no lacing or retention if there's no head. The smell is very, very nice. It's very funky, more funky than normal. There's a bit of oxidized, sour smell, but a nice full funk. That sour cat piss funk. I really kind of like it. The taste doesn't really deliver. It's really more bready and malty, nearly sweet than sour or wild tasting. It's hardly as tart as an Orval. I don't see the wild ale in this. It's not bad tasting, but I'm not getting that wonderful, sour, mouth-puckering kick. Continuing, the mouthfeel is decent. Not chalky, but there isn't enough tartness to bring it. It's somewhat thin, but there is a decent amount of something here to keep it alive. This is very easy to drink, and I don't sense anything off-putting. I would not ever recommend this to the wild ale enthusiast, but I could see it for someone who is looking for something pleasant and different from the average macro or easy drinking beer.

I think 'It's Alright' is an appropriate name, becuase that's just what it is - alright.

A - Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass. Pours a vibrant, clear goldenrod with a foamy white head.

S - Wow. Funky. Scott from the Charleston Beer Exchange described it as sort of a sopressetta aroma, and damned if that isn't the case. Amid that meaty aroma is some grass, and a bit of citrus bite.

T - There's a very bready taste to this. Very grainy, I can definitely get a bit of a corn flavor out of this. Really chewy. When I first hold the beer in my mouth it tastes like it smells, but just as that is about to become unbearable the breadiness washes over.

M - On the thin side of medium bodied, nice and foamy carbonation.

Notes - Without a doubt a well made beer but just... uh.. unpleasant to my sensibilities. Mind you, I'm drinking this on its own without any food pairing, I think with a big slice of salami on rye this would be quite nice. I had to rate the drinkability low because I really don't want another one of these right away.

11.2oz bottle. Crown stamped 22/10/12.

Poured a lighter and clear (became hazy towards the bottom of the bottle)yellow color with a huge sized white head. Aromas of citrus/lemons, some lighter funkiness, barnyard, and some hay. Tastes of lemons, hay, wheatiness, and earthy. Lightly sour with a dry and clean finish. Lighter and somewhat refreshing.
