I went to the GingerMan in Midtown Manhattan and was pleasantly surprised to learn that they were running a Mikkeller special featuring seven our eight single hop ipa's as well as some other interesting specialties. I have loved these beers when I've had, i believe, all of them at one time or another in bottles. On draft, in a flight of multiple single hops, comparing them side by side demonstrates why some hops are better for bitterness and others for aroma and flavor. I recently had a flight of Cascade, Chinook, Tomahawk and Warrior.

Cascade: As might be expected, great aroma and flavor but not as much bitterness as you'd like in an IPA. Very enjoyable and one that I'll get again.

Chinook: The chinook, which is typically a bittering hop, is a sentimental favorite of mine. Although it doesn't offer the same citrusy aroma of many West Coast finishing hops, it is an all around good beer and maybe my favorite.

Tomahawk: Not as bitter as the Chinook but a little more aromatic as well. Very good flavor and and that i might venture for again.

Warrior: The weakest of of the bunch, I thought, but perhaps the most well balance of the four. Some good bitterness, some good aroma, some good flavor. I'll get this again.

Any of these is worthing getting if you see them in bottles or on tap.

Poured from the bottle a hazy apricot color with a creamy off-white head. A thin foam blanket of lacing all around.

Bright hop aroma with grapefruit, pine, pineapple, and lemon.

The taste continues the hoppy personality of this beer. Grapefruit, pine, and baby aspirin dominate the palate. A touch of malt and bitterness in the finish.

Lighter bodied, dry, and sharply carbonated.

I love a hoppy IPA and this is one. Clean, bright, and full of flavor.

Appearance: hazy orange in color with a one finger head that slowly fades.

Smell: grapefruit and pine are easy to detect.

Taste: caramel, pine, grapefruits, and a big bitterness create a flavorful IPA.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp throughout with some light dryness late. Super long aftertaste as the bitterness lingers on the tongue.

Drinkability: easy to drink this beer overall. In the single hop series this one is in the middle if favorites for me.

11.9 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint Glass. Dark Yellow to orange with some good clarity. Off white colored head that erupts after a hard pour then provides excellent lacing.

Smell is pretty good. Hop presence a little strong here than a few other of Mikkeller's Single Hop beers. Herbal, floral, and slight citrus and pine. Pretty good and clean smelling.

Taste is good, on par with the smell, but malt backbone a little more here. Clean bitter citrus zest, primarily orange and tangerine here, pretty earthy too. Sweetness from the malts toasty and a little bready, sweet, good.

For how earthy it tastes I find the mouthfeel pretty clean. Has a good carbonation level medium bodied with a strong bitter finish. A good solid beer, another good single hop series beer.

11.2 oz bottle

A: Cloudy copper under a huge head. Great retention and lace again save the day.

S: Citrus hop, but not huge. Orange, star fruit, lemon and grapefruit. Some spice character, almost a slight bubble gum like character. Bit of a sweet aroma.

T: Fresh hops, very mild pine character. Still getting a hint of bubble gum. Hops finish clean and more citrus-like. Bitterness is fairly mild.

M/D: Medium, smooth bodied, low carbonation. Nice drinkability. Not as good as the Simcoe version, but still good. The bubble gum and spice character I pick up is obviously out of place, but it never throws the beer off.
