A Triple Bock

This Bock from Mikkeller is called Frelser. Means Savior in Danish. The name is a subtle reference to all Bocks Mother: Salvator. Originally the monks brewed Salvator because they needed a very strong and rich beer during Lent. Do not drink this beer instead of a meal, it contains 11% alcohol.

Dark, ruby color with a one inch head and good lace.
Aroma of caramel, malts and bread notes.
Taste was straight up alcohol that hits you with a 1-2 combo, fruit & caramel sweetness as well.
Malt flavor followed and well placed carbonation.
Finish was semi dry with a smooth , low alcohol burn.
Once the beer warms down you get a warmth that brings complexity. WOW!!

On tap at Aurora Brew Works in East Aurora, NY.

This one took a while to pour off the tap- looks foamy and lively. Once it settles, there's a dark brown body, with a large head, and a little bit of lacing. It's slightly murky.

This smells surprisingly yeasty for the style, with phenolic fruity yeast, rye, and a sharp breadiness.

This like a few short steps away from being a good beer. It's definitely too carbonated, giving a sharp and prickly feel. It's not quite a strong or creamy of a flavor as I'd expect from an 11% beer, either. The flavors that are there are nice though, with lots of breadiness, some toffee and rye, spicy hops, carob, and a sort of vague graininess.

This is medium bodied, a bit chewy, with a prickly finish.

This is definitely an interesting beer, but it has some flaws for sure.

Pours into a half liter stein a ruby tinges mahogany with a very thin quick to fade light beige head atop, not much of a crown for a doppelbock although the color was ok.Caramel and raisin stand out most in the nose with a bit of toast and bitter chocolate underneath, the raisin stands out most.Sweet and syrupy with caramel and brown sugar playing a big role on the palate, some roast and bitter chocolate is there in the finish but that shot of dark fruit at the onset is the main flavor component that stood out to me.Not as thick as I like for the style but it's alcoholic and strong no doubt.

Dark brown color with brown head. Aroma has lots of dark fruits and brown sugar. Taste follows with dark fruits, coffee, cocoa and caramel. Medium body and carbonation. A really good doppelbock, one of the best of the style.

The perfect Ash Wednesday beer? Thematically at least. Harkening back to the origins of the style, mikkeller brings the doppelbock into the modern age with an emphasis on dark fruit. Very dark brown body with a big tan head, spotted lacing. Smell stars boozy dark fruit, raisin especially, with slight molasses and toffee malts, almost a touch of resin on the finish. Taste adds notes of cocoa, grains, and earth to balance well, still a massive beer both in taste and feel. Otherwise the feel is silky smooth, full and really does seem like a beer in a glass. Bring on lent!

Enjoyed from the big bottle in a snifter. This triple bock pours a dark and muddled brownish mahogany with a thick head of tan foam that dissipates to a thick ring, nice pool, and very nice lacing. Nose of heavy raisin, brown sugar, moderately strong booze, and a touch of fresh bread. Flavors exceed the nose with raisins doused in dark brown sugars on the front, rum notes on the sides with warming booze, and a dark fruit note in the middle to back with cranberries and raisins mixing nicely with dark breaded notes. Nice medium to full mouth feel, medium carbonation, and a warming boozy finish that kicks hard after a few drinks. Overall an excellent triple bock that drinks pretty smooth and kicks like a mule...or a goat in this case. Excellent.

Cheers

Had this once before. Described on the label as a "trippelbock holy ale". 750ml opened for the first snow/probably the lowest temp of the season so far.

A - Pour to a big ol snifter reveals a dark reddish-brown beer and a few fingers of beige head. Very impressive retention and lace, especially for the ABV. And quite a nice color to boot.

S - Rum-raisin, roast, molasses, dark bread, bit of chocolate, bit of alcohol.

T - Sweetness and alcohol come through a bit stronger here, muddling it up a bit. Pretty intense with the dark fruit and molasses bring on a fruitcake feel, yet still a fair bit of roast persists, some earthy spice notes, toast and tobacco as well.

M - Very viscous and smooth with pretty nice swishy carbonation. Big without quite being heavy. Sweetness+booze can be a bit tolling but for 11% this doesn't drink too bad.

O - I can get wary of high-octane doppelbocks i.e. triplebocks, for those this is pretty good. It's a beast, but it's surprisingly drinkable, has a decent amount of complexity going on, and a pretty notable mouthfeel. Toned down sweetness would be nice though.
