Opened a Black horizonal including the base, whisky, highland, and peat editions, in that order.

From a bottle into a snifter.
White wax

APPEARANCE: Looked exactly the same as the original. Pour began a little flat looking, but soon a beautiful cascade effect produced a 1 ½ finger tan head with great retention. Head is super thick and tight looking. Sits black in the glass with zero carbonation evident. Head fades very slowly to a decent film cap and a healthy ring, leaving lots of immediate lacing down the glass. A good film remains until the end and leaves some great lacing down the glass. Looked killer!

SMELL: Very bold aromas. Roasted malts with pure chocolate as well. The port aromas in the base beer are replaced with whisky and vanilla here, and mesh really well with rest. Huge nose with aromas that jump out of the glass.

TASTE: Roasted, burnt malt, caramel sweetness, chocolate and molasses up front. Lots of flavor from the barrel, including whisky notes and vanilla. A burnt, roasted and bitter aftertaste is very bold and persistent, with barrel notes as well. More boozy than the original, though more whisky and barrel dominated than port dominated, and more bitter in the finish as well. Barrel lends to the base really, really well here. Lots of big, bold flavors, and surprisingly well balanced.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth with a good dose of heat on the swallow and finishes quite mouth coating. The first few sips were quite hot and harsh, but it smoothened out quickly. Exactly the same as the base.

OVERALL: Sensational stuff. Probably my favorite of the four. Just as big, flavorful, and full as the base beer, but the port qualities are replaced by the whisky notes from the barrel. This one is also slightly less sweet and more bitter than the base. A world-class brew to say the least. Too bad these are so pricey, as I'd love to open one on a semi-regular basis. It's a demanding brew and quite expensive, but if you get the chance and are a fan of the base beer, don't hesitate to do it once. Great stuff.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with excellent retention and some good lacing. Aroma of whisky is quite strong with some light vanilla notes and some light roasted malt notes. Taste is bit hot with some warming alcohol and clear whisky notes which are balanced by sweet rich black chocolate notes. Body is full with good carbonation and some alcohol ester notes are clearly present. A bit too much whisky for my taste with alcohol being a bit too present as well thought the base beer is still very enjoyable.

Bottle from hoppypocket. Poured in to CBS Snifter.

A - Dark black. One finger of medium brown head formed and receded to a thin layer. Very good lacing.

S - A big hit of whisky up front that doesn't overpower the beer despite being the dominant aroma. Big roasted malt aroma with some coffee, molasses and charred oak round out the nose. A fairly prominent sweetness is evident overall.

T - A very robust flavour profile over all. Whisky up front that gives way to oak, roasted malts, char, molasses and chocolate. The alcohol is warming throughout, which is no surprise given the ABV. With each sip, the alcohol becomes more and more of a distraction. The finish has some vanilla and sweet, boozy chocolate.

M - Medium body, light carbonation.

Wow, simply put this is on of the best beers I have ever had. Huge thanks to my friend overseas for sending this one my way, Served chilled and poured into a snifter this one was consumed on 04/19/2010.

Dark as night it pours from the bottle with the look of engine oil. Thick, viscous it coats everything around it in sticky black lacing. A two finger head of tan then rises up from the bottom of the glass and reaches a crest that allows the top to just tip over the glass.

Huge aroma of deep whiskey and oak notes.. Enormous as it could be picked up from across the room with ease. Charred oak, rich vanilla, touches of boozy notes are all coming together with a delicate touch of chocolate to reveal a huge, almost otherworldly flavor. Burnt caramel, molasses, cocoa, and rich vanilla all collide around a huge boozy taste. Lots of oak, and whiskey, just immensly complex. Warming brings out touches of coffee and licorice as well as a huge boozy finish.

Overall there is not much more I can say here, This is simply one of the best ba beers I have ever had. It was strong as an ox and kicked my butt, but wow, what a beer,

Enjoyed this at the Festival der Bierkulturen in Köln. 15/5/2010

A - dark as night, slight tan head that sticks around, little lacing

S - sweet, chocolate, vanilla, whisky some roasted malts and a hint of espresso

T - similar to the taste, sweet vanilla and chocolate, slight wood flavor and whisky with warming alcohol, but not overwhelmingly so

D/M - Nice and thick and creamy, coats the mouth well. Perfect amount of carbonation (low-medium) for this type of beer. great beer, something surprisingly I think I could drink a bottle of, but it is a slow drinker. .. But dangerously drinkable at that. As Mikkeller says, enjoy it like a glass of cognac, I couldnt agree more.

notes: this is Black (黑) with white wax on tap, aged on French whisky barrels for 3 months.

375 ML poured into a Great Divide snifter
Thanks to me for purchasing it

A-- Poured a murky, motor oil black. Settled black. no light penetrating this. Good head to this. Dark brown and thick. Stayed at one finger for a while before receding to above film. Receding left a nice collar of film at the top of the head. Dark brown oily substance on the sides of the glass. Good head retention and lots of spotty lacing after swirling.

S-- Dark fruits, chocolate fudge, oak, tobacco, char, and burnt rubber. Alcohol comes in waves. At times intense and at others restrained. When intense it is like fumes.

T-- Sweet. Very sweet. Carmel, Vanilla, and sweet dairy milk. Just touches of the oak and not a lot of whisky. Getting some nail polish remover taste as drinking on.

M-- Slick, oily and coating in front of mouth. Actually quite nice really. Back is another deal. Finishes with a kick of burnt rubber, char, and ash. Yep, it is a Mikkeller all right. Very char and ash finish. Who needs a cigarette when you can drink this! Thinner body than I thought it would be and the nail polish feel is getting annoying

O-- Much better than the base beer. Hated Black. Not nearly as good as the Islay is (need to get another and review it). Quite drinkable for 17.5%. Still a sipper though and better shared. Alcohol is much more restrained in the mouth than in the nose. At times I think his BA treatments are better than the base beers. Go Figure. Worth getting one for long term cellaring.

375ml bottle dipped in white wax poured into a mikkeller star teku. The brew is black with a thin tan head. Some spotty lace sticks to the glass.

The smell is that of used motor oil, char, earthy roast and anise-like sweetness like chocolate mixed with raison. The faintest amount of barrel character is barely noticed and what it does impart is like burnt wood.

The flavor had sweetness like candy upfront than black tar heroine bitterness strong espresso and a mild burnt oakiness. This is in the upper echelon of most bitter beers ive ever encountered. The alcohol presence is also felt in a solvent way and not in any way indicative of the spirit barrel this was aged in.

This is medium to full bodied with light carbonation. A friggen intense brew that is slightly sweeter than its base. Ive had this beer in my cellar for nearly 5 years and honestly regret opening it, it might have mellowed out if i held on to it for another decade or 2.

Had this at Hashigo Zake Beer Bar in Wellington, New Zealand on 10/13/10. Poured into a Mikkeller stemmed glass (these were sweet glasses)

Poured out of the bottle black as a moonless night. A small foam head emerges out of the liquid that is a dark mocha in color. This settles to a thin film that floats atop the beer. Swirling the beer leaves nice oily legs on the walls of the glass. There is some nice sticky lacing left down the glass. When held to the light absolutely no light comes though. A nice looking beer.

This was the low point of the beer for me. Really all I ever got was just strong alcohol. As i take a few whiffs, the alcohol actually burns the nose. Sadly, even after warming up for a good 30 minutes, the smell never changed.

Now to the high point of the beer, the taste. The whisky from the barrels is very up front and center. After that a smoky/roast taste comes though. Finishes with a nice dark chocolate taste. The alcohol that dominates the smell, really is hidden well in the taste. Toward the end of the drinking the beer became almost sweet, possibly due to the whisky. This was awesome, especially compared to the majority of the beers I had in New Zealand.

This had a good amount of carbonation which led to a medium body feel. I would have liked this a bit thicker other than that it was a nice and smooth stout. The alcohol really isn't that noticeable but a nice warming sensation is noted as the beer is swallowed.

When I first started drinking this, all I got was the whisky. As this warmed and opened up it started to get better and better. I really enjoyed this and am glad I got to try it. I would for sure buy this again.

Side note: If you happen to find yourself in Wellington, check out Hashigo Zake. It is a very nice beer bar with a great list of beer (both American craft, NZ craft and various imports)

Big thanks to Jedwards for the final pre-move blowout cellar crash. Pours two shades shy of black with no head, just a mocha-colored cluster of bubbles around the shoulders. Nose reveals ethanol, dark malts, cocoa and some vanilla notes towards the back. Taste is sweet, charred, earthy and has a bit of soy sauce character. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy with an oily texture and a still carbonation. All and all, a little too hot in my opinion, but there's a lot of complexity to this beer. A little goes a long way.

A - Pours black, tan head, some whisps and bubbles remain after the initial pour.

S - Huge whiskey note right up front in your face, followed by some oak, slight chocolate, and a touch of coffee/expresso. It's really hard to notice much else besides the whiskey...woah.

T - It's like drinking a shot of whiskey with a touch of stout in there. Hot damn, literally. Lots of smooth whiskey, toasty oak, some chocolate. Huge alcohol bite and harsh oaky bitter finish that stays with you long after you swallow.

M - Full bodied, rich and thick, low carbonation. Motor oil.

D - This is a monster of a beer. Tons of hot whiskey, oak, more whiskey. I finished my share and didn't want anymore. A little too boozy and the finish punished my taste buds. Not a huge fan but not terrible by any means.

I prefer the regular "Black" to this, though it is a lovely black with a nice brown head.

Whisky and coffee in the nose, and a suggestion of sweet chocolate. It seems a little off-balance...the stout side seems too sweet and the whisky lends an odd bitterness.

This weird bittersweet character carries through to the flavour. A little bit more mild, but the flavour has a noticeable alcohol burn. This reminds of whisky filled chocolates, but with real alcohol. Not nearly as well balanced as Black.

Nice, smooth mouthfeel and despite the slightly unbalanced flavour, quite drinkable.

Shared this at a home get together.

This is a potent beer. Strong smell of molasses and alcohol. The taste is the same, add in some oak. Real oily feel in the system. The warmth of alcohol in evident in the stomach.

As you can probably tell, I have had a few already tonight.

Thanks to Sean for sharing. I think Sean wants to put me in the hospital, as he thought it would be to drink this after going to a gin tasting. Served in a Stone IRS glass.

A - Pours with a surprisingly generous mocha foam that features solid retention, a thick collar and eventually a thin cap. There are some tiny spots of lace to go with a glass-coating film. Body is unsurprisingly black.

S - Huge oak and whisky bite, some smoke, peat, and perhaps a hint of clean alcohol. As it warms more bitter chocolate, espresso, butterscotch, burnt sugars, and rum-soaked cake character emerges. This actually smells very good, other than the faint and perhaps unavoidable whiff of alcohol, and is quite a bit different from the Islay version I had.

T - The taste, unfortunately, is much worse. Like the base beer it's full of char, tar, burnt espresso, burnt paper, burnt effigies of Tomme Arthur, tire fires, and god knows what else. Lacks much in the way of balancing sweetness that the Islay edition had, but thankfully the booze is well-hidden.

M - Thick, full-bodied, very low carbonation, some light alcohol warmth, and a smoky tannic finish. Quite appropriate and enjoyable.

D - Not as good as the Islay edition in my book, but still a step up from the base beer. Just too much burnt, bitter, and smoked flavors, particularly in the finish, without anything to balance the scales. Still, I'm glad to try these Mikkeller "series" beers as they are very illustrative and likely pedagogical to some (more in the "what doesn't work" way).

A: Pours pitch black (no surprise in other words). The large pale brown head sinks into decent lacings.

S: Sweetness overload. Syrup/molasses. Then there is vanilla from the oak. Dark dried fruits and obvious high ABV.

T: Sweetness, chocolate and vanilla. Roast is heavy, almost smoked. Some coffee. Dark dried fruits. Lots of alcohol.

M: Smooth, creamy and syrupy full body. Carbonation is non-present while aftertaste stays for some time, smoke and bitterness.

O: Well, a very interesting beer, to bad the ABV is this high - it's almost impossible to disguise the alcohol...

Much thanks to forgetfu for supplying the Mikkeller Black vertical for this tasting.

A- Pours a dark chocolate color with a fingers width of mocha colored head. Stained the glass with a nice butterscotch film as the beer was consumed.

S- Mellowed whiskey and oak upfront with a caramel chocolate background. Vastly different from the base beer.

T- Once again, very sweet upfront, but it is not as prolonged. Mild whiskey and oak flavors cut in midway. Finish is of whiskey barrel along with some spice. There is a bit of chalkiness in the finish that put me off a slight bit.

M- Much like the base, too thin for the style.

D- Alcohol was hidden fairly well, especially for being BA beer. I think time mellowed out the whiskey a bit, especially since other reviews talk about how in your face it is. However, the chalkiness combined with the sweetness wears on you a bit.

Overall, along with the base beer, this was my other least favorite of all the variants.

Pours black as night with nicely tanned head. Great head for the ABV and ridiculous lacing. Funny, you can see rainbows in the bubbles like in an oil spill on the road, presumably because of the ABV.

Smell is port, gourmet coffee, chocolate, brown sugar, crunchy Belgian notes, alcoholic green apple. Sometimes booze is at the fore, other times not so much. Lots of roast.

Taste is a deep dark roasty maelstrom. There is sweetness, but it's in balance for me. The precarious tripod of roast, alcohol and sweetness ultimately holds up with each resting on one another. Also some charred oak.

Mouthfeel is big and thick.

Overall an accomplished big beer.
