Bottle from Whole Foods in Santa Cruz. Pours black with a nice tan head. So far so good. Aroma: GROTESQUE. An intriguingly revolting smell; equal parts burning tire yard, car battery terminal gunk, rubber cement, dry-erase board, and tar. What the HELL. I get nearly zero beer character out of this aroma. Smells like a car accident took a dump in a bottle. Smells like a horse getting turned into glue. Smells like an alien from the planet Sulfur Twat drowning in a bog. Oh yeah, it has a flavor too. Charred chicken skin, ash, chemicals, asphalt. The most undrinkable beer I've had since SA Triple Bock 1000 ratings ago. AVOID AVOID AVOID

At home from an aged bottle. with Humiston. Loads of oak and peat even after a decade on the shelf. Smoke. Too much but interesting.

Popped this at Canchola's for the first Raider game in Las Vegas. Bottle was 10 years old at that point.

Pours black, barely forms and does not hold a head beyond a mere lighter brown head on the top around 1/10". The aroma has so much peated scotch whiskey notes. Wowza. Right away I'm like, man, Nick U would love this. The coffee was surprisingly present still 10 years later.

Taste is much as expected, heavy peated whiskey going on here, as much as about any product has going for it. Polarizing, but the use of honey seems to have created a drier mouth feel for me to go ahead and continue sipping on this for over 2 hours. And I split it! Its a tough drink, but I absolutely know those who loved and would love it. The alcohol is boozy, but not aggressively given its relative big time strength. The smoke is nice. Light chocolate malt. The mouth feel is less heavy and sticky than I expected it would be.

Not for me, but I can recognize its well made.

Poured into a tulip glass. Comes out dark brown and poops to black as it rises. Lost a lot of carbonation, not much left. Good class retention and coating on the sides.

Smell singes the nostrils, so Smokey it literally can water your eyes. I can’t really pick up on much else, a touch of sweetness I can’t quite put my finger on.

Taste is opressive. Think of the most evil person you know and liquify their soul this is probably what it would taste like. Again some sweet on the back but you really gotta be looking for it.

It’s so Smokey it literally dries your mouth. I’ll give it credit for having a thinner body than expected though.

It’s a 12.7 ounce bottle and it probably should be split between 8 people. This beer is no joke. If you’re into peated whisky this is probably your dream beer outside of that don’t dare drink this one alone.

yes this is old, and sure its not for everyone, but these ratings are not objective and offensively low for this beer, even now. its one of the more intense barrel variants i have had of it, but why order or but a beer aged in scotch whiskey barrels if you dont like scotch whiskey? this was incredibly still from the tap (yes the tap! how cool!), syrupy thick, and chewing tobacco brown, not as black as i remember others being, but equally dense, thats for sure. lots of peat on the nose, iodine thing makes it seem a little medicinal, especially with all the booze, which hasnt mellowed much over time. i like the way the whiskey makes this more smokey and less sweet, there is a great earthy richness to this, and even though what i could taste of the honey in the original is gone, its still pretty complex. the coffee doesnt taste as old as i think the beer is, but its less a factor than are all the dark grains, slightly burnt, dark raw chocolate, and an real espresso bean nature. the iodine and peat smoke overtake this though in the taste about midway through, and even though there is some chocolate and vanilla in here, its all scotch whiskey by the finish, which you either love or hate. i like how much the barrel influenced this one, and would have loved to try it when it was brand new, but dont let the reviews and low scores fool you, if you like the whiskey, you will like this beer. another weird one of a kind brew from mikkeller!

12.7 fl oz bottle poured into a snifter. I believe this is about 5 years old.

A: Pours black and leaves a brown head of a couple fingers that fades away relatively quickly.

S: A lot going on. Big peat for sure. Also some dark chocolate, ash, plastic, slight oxidation. Lots of character.

T: Similar to the nose. Huge peat, smoke, ash, dark chocolate, hint of coffee, plastic. Definitely a slooow sipper.

M: Medium to full creamy body. Low carb.

O: Definitely an interesting beer. Very intense. If you don't like peat/islay scotch you definitely won't like this. I enjoy it as a sipper - there is so much going on, and it picked up so much influence from the barrels.
