330 mL bottle picked up at the LCBO; best before Jun 19 2018. I have very little experience with chile beers. Served slightly chilled.

This spiced porter pours a murky brownish-black colour, totally opaque and topped with a beautiful, foamy, deep tan-coloured head. It starts off nearly two fingers high, but slowly recedes over the next five or six minutes, giving rise to a thin collar/cap and a ring of messy, sticky beige lace. This is a beautiful-looking beer, and the aroma is similarly impressive - lots of chipotle smoke comes through easily with each whiff, with lesser contributions of roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark stone fruit and pepper.

Absolutely stellar. Molasses sweetness and roasted malts start things off, with a nice blend of dark chocolate, plums and coffee. Somewhat smoky, with a charry note that leads into the chipotle spice - which provides a nice little kick of chile pepper heat at the tail end of the profile. The pepper lingers into the aftertaste, outlasting the roasted malt sweetness, but still fades with time and fails to build up with each sip (I consider this an advantage, but YMMV). On the heftier side of medium-bodied, with relatively low carbonation levels that only gently agitate the palate - strangely, though, the spicy heat seems to help this one out, providing the illusion of a livelier mouthfeel. This is a delicious beer, but it's still a sipper - the abv isn't all that high, but the heat and bold flavour profile demands a slow, deliberate approach to quaffing.

Opened my second-to-last 330 mL bottle of this (BB Jun 19 2018), served at cellar temperature this time. The aroma is intoxicatingly good, and the spicy pepper heat is still there, although softened with age. Texas Ranger is still the best chile beer I've ever tried. It possesses just the right amount of peppery heat - impossible to ignore, but not so pungent as to drive people away, or to make finishing the bottle a chore. Unique and delicious - absolutely worth a shot, and probably the most interesting Mikkeller beer to be brought into the LCBO (save perhaps the Black). I wish I'd bought more of these in 2015 when they were still lingering around.

Final Grade: 4.47, a superb A grade.

Pours a pitch black color with a dense mocha colored head that settles into a light cap with some lacing. Looks very stout.

The porter has a berry like sweet and sour combo, with caramel to add more sweetness. A nice whiff of smoke from the chipotles. Gives the beer a nice meaty scent.

The taste starts off very meaty between the heavy roasted malt and smoke flavors. Somewhere in the middle comes the sweet/sour berry and a metallic twang. The finish is big on roasted malt, ground coffee and light chocolate. Noticable heat from the chipotles.

Well bodied with tingly carbonation. Fairly silky but also sticky. Finishes with a roasted bitterness and chipotle heat. The bitterness tends to linger a bit too long on this one.

I like it. It is a heavy duty porter with stronger roasted flavor than the "porter" style. I dig the smokiness from the peppers and the heat is interesting. Feels much larger than the 6.6ABV, not that you can detect the alcohol. Not sure if this would be for everyone but I like smokey brews.

Appearance: looks like a freshly poured espresso, almost black, with a milk chocolate head

Aroma: black licorice, fresh pine hops (upon realizing this has chili pepper, think that is what I was actually picking up here), dark chocolate, something almost floral, vanilla

Tate & Mouthfeel: chocolate at first, but rapidly taken over by rich, dark roasted coffee that is just sliding into burnt territory and acquiring the associated bitterness, but not so much that it overpowers the robust coffee taste; long finish is of pure dark cocoa, even including a slight powdery mouthfeel; mild and fine carbonation with a medium-heavy body make for a luxurious feel; hint of chili heat is a nice touch and build over time playing a more significant role

Overall: the big, powerful, deep roast malt flavours are fantastic, with chocolate and malt pairing up beautifully with the chipotle heat; saddle up, it packs a punch

A: The beer poured dark brown with a thin mocha-colored head.
S: There is a light to moderate aroma of roasted malts with smoky and chocolaty notes.
T: The initial taste is very similar to the smell but flavors of chipotle peppers quickly make their presence known. The overall taste isn't that malty and there is some spiciness in the finish. There is a good balance between the malts and the spices.
M: It feels medium-bodied, creamy and very smooth on the palate. There is a low level of carbonation and a little bit of dryness.
D: The beer is very easy to drink and is unique and well done for its style. I would definitely have another one of these.

American Porter with a kick, let's do it! Poured into a globe-style goblet an opaque dark brown; the beer is very dark. Two thumbnails of espresso crema foam adorn the inky liquid.

The nose offers some indication of the spiciness within - it smells a lot like those artisan dark chocolate bars containing chile pepper. Also hints of sweet marshmallow and mesquite smoke.

Time for a taste...whoa, this is one spicy beer. Now, let's get this straight, it's not Ed's Cave Creek Chili Beer - there's far more substance here, obviously. However, if you don't like the idea of a spicy beer, this beer is not for you. I am thrilled at the idea of chile flavor in my beer, so this hits the spot. Up front, the beer shows firm on the palate with the traditional flavor components of an American Porter - chocolate, coffee, earthy hop character. It's at the back end where the smoky chile pepper builds and builds. Aftertaste of chocolate, ashy Sumatran coffee, and chile is extremely long - if you're not pairing this with anything, you'll probably be tasting it for an hour or more after the last sip.

I'm thinking of this as a baby Cigar City Hunahpu - one with far less alcohol, yet with the chiles amped up a bit.

Mouthfeel is very good; it lands with big-beer silkiness even though we're playing at 6.6%.

To sum up, a beer for hardcore fans of chile pepper, chocolate and coffee. In that context, it's quite drinkable. I also appreciate Mikkeller packing this much flavor into a relatively "light" beer, ABV-wise.

Thanks to Jeff for cracking this one. It pours a continuous black, only broken up by the darkest brown and ruby edges that hug the glass. The cloud-like tan head grows as big as the beer itself and is very slow to settle. Thick sheets of lace stick to the glass as the frothy head makes its descent.

Simply put, the aroma is full of roast and spice. Toasted and nearly burnt, roasted malts with some char, coupled with zesty, peppery and chipotle barbecue-ish spices. There's definitely some spicy heat coming off the aroma, and it's backed by a mild smokiness with a light, peaty undercurrent.

The taste pretty much follows through exactly where the aroma leaves off. Pretty smokey up front with a quick rush of BBQ-like chipotle peppers that invade the palate quickly. It's actually not as tingly-spicy as I was expecting, rather the flavor of the peppers and the spices are more prominent than their actual heat; that is definitely a good thing.

Roasty malts are the structure of everything, though they're pretty light in comparison to the heavy chipotle spice. I really like the flavors of this brew; the problem is, they are intense enough to kind of wear the palate down quick. Drinking this is copious amounts would be difficult, even at only 6.6% ABV. Medium bodied, medium carbonation, with a pretty smooth and lightly creamy mouth feel.

Definitely an interesting beer, and even a bit different than most of your smoked options. Chipotle peppers are easily identifiable, and while tasty, a little bit certainly goes a long way. Would be good in smaller pours of 4 oz or so, but finish even half a bottle would be a challenge for me.

another new one for me, i had been waiting for the right time to open this one and settled on last night. served chilled and split into a couple pint glasses, this one was consumed on 10/02/2010.

really the most perfect pour i could have imagined with a thick dark, abyss like black color an a huge three finger head of thick tan foamy lacing that stuck to the sides of the glass throughout the session, really quite impressive i have to admit.

aroma is deep chocolate and coffee, immensly complex but not overly spicy up front. this seemed to come more into play as it warms, bringing an earthy tone into play and a thick peppery spice that starts to tingle the nostrils. as i take the first sip a warm, thick, wave of chocolate and rich coffee washes over the tongue with the force of a thick wave. letting this shake off starts to give you some nice bitter coffee notes as well as touches of sweet molasses which try and wipe the palate clean, but then it hits. nice hot chili peppers that hit you with a twang. not overly done an to be honest very well placed it gives it just enough of an accent to be totally forceful and complex. smooth, decadent, nice dessert beer.

overall a really solid offering and one i am gla i got to try. now if i can get beer geek bacon i am set.

Pours a black color. 3/4 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of alcohol, strong roasted malt, strong sweet malt, slight dry hop, and a hint of dark citrus. Fits the style of an American Porter. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of alcohol, strong roasted malt, hint of chile, slight sweet malt, and hint of dark citrus. Overall, great appearance, aroma, body, blend, and complexity.

Black crude oil, no carbonation, a half finger of dark, deep brown chocolate foamy head.

Cocoa, hot sauce, slightly acidic, tar, freezer burnt dark chocolate.

Cocoa, chocolate, then turns hot, spicy, then goes into a hot sauce like Crystal's or Franks with notes of acidic sourness, then mixes again with cocoa.

Medium thick, oily body, low carbonation.

Got on Wish beer, drank in Chiangmai Sept 5th, 2016 sitting beside my wife on our bed. Really well done brew. I've had their Mexas Ranger which is hard to beat, but this one is excellent.

Had on tap at Mellow Mushroom in Johnson City, TN.

Arrives almost pitch black with a thick dark tan head. Really good lacing and head retention.

Coffee and dark chocolate are most evident in the aroma. There are some spices there too.

The flavor is all dark chocolate and coffee up front with some peppery spice in the background. Pepper becomes more apparent towards the middle and finish as a moderate warmth builds in the back of the throat. Some smoke is there too.

Overall this is an awesome beer. I don't think I have had a chili beer before that was this nicely balanced. The warmth is just right and the chili flavor doesn't overwhelm the rest of the beer. Really glad I got to try this one.
