4.25

Update 5/17/2016: 4.5

Poured from a bottle. The cap has rusted from being stored in the refrigerator for many years.

L: Pitch black with dark, clear, ruby at the very edges; SRM 40+. Almost non-existent head, with an thin ephemeral film of tiny bubbles.

S: Dark roasted malt aroma, with dark chocolate, fudge, caramel, toffee sweetness, and light nuttiness. Very faint earthy and resiny hop character. Medium dark fruit esters character throughout - mostly prune and raisin. Moderate alcohol notes apparent but not overwhelming.

T: Hight dark roasted grain character and dark chocolate upfront. Medium-high burnt toast and charcoal, peat, and a slight smokiness midpalate and at the finish. Bitterness that emanates from the roasted malt is intensified by high bitterness from the hops. Nevertheless, the balance is towards the malt. Medium-low sweetness from caramel, burnt brown sugar, and toffee. The finish is dry, and the dryness lasts for almost half a minute.

F: Full-bodied with low carbonation that is barely detectable. Slight astringency on the finish.

O: A pith-black, full-bodied, fully roasted, dead-serious stout that epitomized the "old engine oil" paradigm. A sublime sipping ale with no holds barren on roasted character.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a huge dark brown foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of black chocolate with light roasted coffee and some light vanilla notes. Taste is also a great mix between some huge black chocolate notes which are well balanced by some vanilla notes and some light coffee notes at the end. Body is super full with limited filtration and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Very well done with some super good vanilla notes which make this beer very drinkable and complex at the same time.

Thanks Svend. 250 ml bottle is more than enough. Big boozy splash of thick coffee and sourness. Black, little white head. Good for what it is, but not a RIS I want again. A little infected or intentional I cannot tell. Not the best I have had from this brewer.

This is a big beer! Very tasty and thick. Classic stout flavors without going too roasty or too sweet. Pretty much balanced down the middle. Body is amazing.

Lady, this IS an imperial Stout. Poured at a good temperature with a nice, thick, slightly creamy, brown head that settles after a bit and a little lace. Color is an opaque brown black. Aroma is a little subdued and has roast, malt , earth, leather, dark ripe fruit. Flavor's like nose, tang is in front, bitter right behind and dominating, then some sweet. Body is velvety and perfect carbonation. Finish is like flavor, very long, has a bit of an off taste, and only a hint of alcohol. Monster of a beer.

Picked this up at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Deep black pour with beautiful mocha colored one finger head that fades pretty quickly with decent lacing. Loads of roasty malt in the nose with hints of chocolate, peat, alcohol, and burnt espresso. The chocolate really comes out in the taste. Roasty malt, caramel, cocoa, molassess, and alcohol round it out with hints of smoke, espresso, and a touch of dark fruit. The mouthfeel is slightly thick and a little flat, with a nice bitter hop finish that helps balance the sweetness of the malt. The alcohol is present throughout, but it is 11% afterall, and it doesn't really hurt the drinkability. It's obviously a sipper, and it warmed me up nicely on a cold fall day. Yet another solid offering from Mikkeller!

Have we really seen a beer that's this chocolaty without adding chocolate? Have we seen a beer that holds so much coffee without adding coffee? Have we had a beer that's this strong in its effects without introducing barrel or iced techniques? Now that we have eliminated the gimmicks what do we have?

George opens with a seriously dark black appearance that doesn't play around. It's black to its core and patiently releases a mocha-stained head that easily outlasts the session. Sticky in its lacing, the beer is as hearty as they come.

Strongly aromatic, its the scents of coffee that lead the way. Its strong espresso, cocoa and burnt molasses notes waft about with an under current of vanilla, caramel, and unmistakable bourbon-like alcohols. With not chocolate, coffee, molasses or bourbon aging in its descriptor, those flavors all align on the nose with authority and balance.

Its sultry taste starts with that melange of toffee, roast, bitter chocolate and walnuts. Its blended taste is even-keel as no individual taste stands out above the rest. Then as the ale crosses the middle of the palate, its vanilla and caramel taste subsides and its roasty dryness ensues. Finishing with coffee and campfire, its dryish nature comes to life- heightened by the strong alcohol taste of bourbon. Still, a mild spicy tone emerges with a pep of pepper, aniseed, and char.

Without question, the beer's body is immense. Laces with malted barley and a blend of residual sweetness and carbonation- its culmination is an alcoholic milkshake of espresso-roast proportions. Lovely in its balance but challenging in its strength, the ale finishes roasty-dry with just enough malt support to give a savory and sipping impression.

Sure, a beer of this stature will promote some roast-derived astringency, some fusal alcohols and some phenolic medicinal notes. But the high quality of the beneficial aspects of the beer far outweigh its fine shortcomings.

330 ml Bottle

Poured into a chalice a black color, pretty nice carbonation, with not much of a head, it just spread out into a pretty nice island, with some sticky lacing. The nose is malty, roasty, some licorice, lots of chocolate/toffee, and some coffee notes, vanilla. The taste is very nice malty, roasty, vanilla, slight licorice, dark stuff. Full body, ABV is hidden very nicely, definitely a sipper. Overall, this one surprised me, very nice. Glad to see it available to me.

Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a one-finger, tan head of foam. It smelled of chocolate and mild coffee notes with some toffee and caramel, too. It tasted of chocolate, coffee and burnt molasses. Caramel and toffee flavors are faint. It was crisp and smooth.

Uff, what beer! It can be taken with a spoon, it is very thick. For me, too much, too hard. But we must recognize that it is a fantastic beer, very well made, nothing balanced, forceful, heavy metal!
