Came wrapped in brown paper, inside is a caged and corked 375 ml green bottle. Pours out a dark hazy brown, tall chunky and spongy beige head. Lots of rivulets of sticky lacing.

Earthy wood and peat at first on the nose, some bright citrus rises up, but then gets overwhelmed by earthy character again. Some licorice, hints of molasses.

Intense but balanced flavour. Earthy, musty notes of wood up front, some licorice, then the bitterness kicks in. Leafy herbal hops stand out more than anything else, but it's more bitterness than flavour. Bitterness is still contained though.

Medium-full mouthfeel, smooth and silky texture, quite full on the finish.

If this is actually anywhere's in the ballpark of 1000 IBU's then it's impressive along the lines of brewing finesse, as it's very balanced for how bold the flavours are. In taken in the context of a Barleywine it holds its own as well, I don't think the Double IPA listing is as appropriate when all is said and done. The thing is that once I've sampled this I really have no urge or desire to go back and explore it again.

Sample of an out dated bottle and it's noticeable, I think. Dark brown lour, with no head and no lace. Smell: At first I only noticed alcohol esters and acetone, then whiskey and chocolate. Very low carbonation and light body. Taste of whisky, chocolate and toffee. Not as bitter as aone could think. Guess i'll try to get another one in good conditions, it's interesting and it should be much better then.

Picked this up at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Surprisingly dark, murky brown pour with almost no carbonation or lacing. The nose is also very surprising and dominated by a very peaty, burnt rubber smell. As it warmed it began to have hints of an Imperial IPA, but that peat was still overpowering. The taste was just as bad. Totally overpowered by the peat and burnt rubber. Has an almost chemical taste to it, much like their Black Hole Peat Whiskey Edition. This isn't quite as bad as that. The mouthfeel is nearly flat with a horrible bitter aftertaste. Overall, this beer has no semblance of an Imperial IPA, and was one of the few beers I've ever poured down the drain. Nothing at all like the regular 1000 IBU which I enjoyed. Very disappointing...

Pours a hazy brown-ish color with a tan head. In the aroma, mellow hops and notes of oak. In the taste, Pine hops to small grapefruity hops, with small notes of alcohol and oak, almost bourbon like. A smooth and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry grapefruity hop in the aftertaste. Mellow hops for what it is, actually expecting more out of this, but I still enjoyed though.

I'm reviewing this as a 'beer', not an ipa, I dont think its fair to call it an ipa because the barrel aging has totally changed the character of this beer.

Its dark brown with a cakey foamy tan head.

Smell is whiskey, dirt, smoke, barrel, 2nd sniff I get more whiskey but also some hop notes, grapefruit, grass, hoppy

Taste is whiskey, then some sweet hoppy fruits in the middle, then more dry whiskey and smoke on the tail end. very dry. Not very bitter, more of a whiskey flavor than an ipa.

Could use some more carbonation, pretty thick, if it was better carbonated I would rate this as an elite beer.

This is a very interesting beer, and I enjoyed drinking it. Even though there is a lot of whiskey flavor here, it is surprisingly smooth and drinkable. I think maybe alot of the reviews here were expecting something else, maybe more similar to the non barrel aged version. As it stands on its own though, this is a good beer.

Ooookay....I can appreciate what they're trying to do, but it just isn't right. The colour is reminiscent of a brown ale, and the head is a firm sand colour.

Booze, hops, raisins, chocolate and wine in the nose. Light smoked smell. Barleywine? Perhaps...IPA...nope.

Thick, cloying taste. Coffee, wine, alcohol, sugar. Defintie smokey taste - a maple bacon sort of flavour for sure. Overly sweet.

Carbonation is too low, and the sweetness and alcohol really hamper this. Retool this as a barleywine and you might have something.

Appearance. Pours a very hazy deep amber brown with half a finger of sticky beige head. Tons of sediment in the bottle leaving 1/4 of the beer behind.

Smell. Spicy, resinous hops and a little caramel. Plenty of booze.

Taste. Herby, floral hops, sweet caramel, very woody taste in the end but not as bitter as I expected. Different, but not bad.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with medium carbonation.

Overall. Very interesting brew. Not the hop bomb I was expecting. Glad to have tried it for sure. Thanks northyorksammy.

Bottle sample with many thinks to Milos. Dark murky orangey/straw. Pours a sticky and thick froth.Looks good! Intense aroma of alcohol leads to woody metallic notes and burning cleaning product. Very bitter with really heavy sweetness. Burning, a very bitter metallic finish. Resiny and cloying too. A complete disaster. Pass.

Not executed well. Boozy, tastes of extract. Whiskey ageing did not work, and likely substantially reduced the bite and taste of the hops.Below average mouthfeel. Carbonation OK. Bitterness with some malts, minor bourbon. Nice head. Thanks Milos, freshly imported bottle.

My 50th Mikkeller rate.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a brownish-red color with a tan head. The aroma is a mix of citrus and pineapple, with some wood and alcohol notes also present. Very nice.

The flavor is heavy on the barrel aging. I get a lot of smoke and oak notes, with some whiskey also mixed in. The base beer also comes through with some orange, caramel and toffee notes as well as some alcohol. The bitterness is low.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Rich, dark brown colour with a creamy, light tan head. Fair retention with the head dissipating to a thin film.

Robust, rounded, piney hop aroma. Good caramel sweetness. No noticeable smokeyness. Nicely balanced.

This is an interesting beer. There is so much malt sweetness that the hop character is counteracted with a moderate fruity hop character being fine. The main thing that the sweetness does is counteract the smokey, peaty barrel notes. The flavour itself isn't actually bad, but I feel that Mikkel made a mistake here. A fresh, new oak barrel or ex Bourbon, Highland Scotch or wine barrel would have worked but the Islay notes are over the top and mask the beauty of a 1000IBU DIPA.

Medium-full body with a smooth, clean low carbonation. Actually really nice.

As I say, this beer was a good idea but the execution was wrong. The barrel choice was poorly thought out and the end product suffers from it. While I like the aroma, I find the flavour a bit strange.

Pours a copper brown colour with thick off-white head. Lots of lacing on the glass. Smells of ceder (I think it is ceder, I'm not a wood expert) and herbal hops. I was expecting more pine or citrus, but hops are still there. Very bitter, though I guess people can't taste more than 100IBU's, so not too surprising I don't find this especially more bitter than a typical double IPA. Very resiny type of hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Nice mouthfeel. I think this beer is pretty well put together, I'm just not loving the flavour as much as I thought I would.

A big thanks to MasterSki for sharing this. It can only get better from here.

A - Copper/amber color beer with a whitish head that left behind some random and inconsistent lace. Decent retenion.

S - The smell is almost vomit inducing, and I am not exaggerating (I had to surpress the gag reflex). Horrible alcohol, rubber, rotted hops, swamp, wood, and turpentine. Wow. You'd think some of that horrible stuff might cancel each other out, but it more seemed to have a multiplicitive effect.

T - WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO SOMEBODY? I can understand the mad scientist brewer in his crazy laboratory seeing what odd and brilliant creations he can come up with. But, when you create Frankenstein, you should not let him out of the lab! After pulling this out of the barrel and sampling WHY WOULD YOU THEN BOTTLE IT??" Tastes like I'm making out with a heavy smoker who just tried to freshen her breath by gargling turpentine and rubbing alcohol. Strange earth tones (i.e. dirt) and just all around grossness. It's a bunch of bad chemicals off the shelf at your local Walmart dumped into a barrel. I'm worried I'm going to go blind shortly after drinking this. There is some oily hops in there, but you really have to look for it past all the bad tastes, and you don't want to because it means you have to drink a bit of this. One of the worst things I've ever tasted.

M - Oily, medium bodied, carbonated. The best thing about the mouthfeel is that in evaluating it you can try to distract yourself from the horrible taste.

D - I'd love to meet the people who can get through bottles of this. I can't even come close. Only the morbidly curious should try this.

Bottle shared by Alex - thanks! Poured into a Lost Abbey pint, color is brownish red with a small off white tan head that fades quickly. There is a huge amount of sediment floating around. Smell is slightly sweet, turpentine, rubbing alcohol, burnt dead bugs that you find piled up in the bottom of a light fixture. Smells is really atrocious - if I had taken anything else out of the fridge, like milk, cheese, juice, etc.. and it smelled this bad, there is no way i would have eaten/drank it. But for some reason I had to try it. The taste is just as bad, if not worse then the smell. Ash tray, OFF! bug spray, other assorted chemicals. If the barrel they used was cedar, and sprayed with rodent killer before they dumped the beer in, then there is a strong barrel flavor. Otherwise there is nothing here resembling a barrel aged double IPA. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a light carbonation, probably the only thing remotely good about this beer. Do brewers taste the beer before they bottle it anymore? There is no way this should have passed any quality control measures. This is by far the worst beer I have ever tried.

Got this at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam.

From a corcked bottle into a snifter.

APPEARANCE: Pours a big 3+ finger medium looking off-white head with great retention. Auburn brown or rosewood read in color, which is a little darker than most in the style, with a bit of carbonation and a few floaties in there. Head fades slowly to a thick foam cap leaving some immediate lacing. A good film remains and leaves some nice lacing down the glass. A good looking uniquely colored double India. Same as regular version.

SMELL: Lots of pale malts and toffee as well. Some smoky notes and hints of peat, with citrus and grapefruit hops joining the show. Some earthy notes and wet wood. Mostly peat and citrus notes, and quite bold as well. Much different than the original.

TASTE: Some pale malts, sweet toffee, and lots of peat and wet wood for sure. Cedar mostly. Some citrus and bitter grapefruit at the swallow, leading into a peaty, woody and very bitter aftertaste that is bold and very persistent. Some spicy booze in there as well, but the hops and barrel are the stars of the show. Different for sure, but very nice.

PALATE: Medium body and carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and oily slick with a bit of heat at the end. Finishes nicely mouth-coating and oily. Great feel on this one. Same as the original.

OVERALL: An enjoyable and interesting brew. Good stuff for sure, but not quite as enjoyable as the original. The barrel played a big role here, adding peat and woody notes and slightly drowning out the base DIPA. The aging certainly made the beer more complex, and it was done very well, but to be honest, I'm not sure if the style needs to be barrel aged to begin with. Regardless, this is well worth checking out if you get the chance, just be aware that this is almost a style in itself.

Alex should be banned for providing this beer. Poured into tulip.

A - Pours a brownish/slightly red, off-white frothy head, some spotty lacing and a thin cap on top.

S - Char, rubber, hot alcohol, rubbing alcohol, not good alcohol.

T - Why? Why did you brew this beer and release it? Huge hot alcohol, tar, rubber, kitchen cleaner. Ugh. No more!

M - Medium, slight carbonation, blah.

D - Worst beer I've ever reviewed. Don't try this...NO!

Bottle courtesy of wordemupg. Apparently Alberta got all of the bottles sent to North America? Served in a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

A - Pours with a strangely persistent tan foam that leaves plenty of splotchy lace. Amber body with obvious suspended sediment (yeast? hop particles?). Pretty decent looking brew.

S - Smells like inner tubes and turpentine. Hint of cedar and Pledge as it warms up.

T - Cardboard, solvents, and a finish of paint thinner and nail polish.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation. Fairly smooth texture. Finishes boozy, with a dry hoppy character as well.

D - This is quite possibly the worst beer I have ever encountered. Useful only as a practical joke, or to trade for White Birch Indomitus.
