Notes: A coffee-IPA.

Ingredients: Water, malt, barley flakes, Tomahawk hops, coffee and yeast.

The coffee comes from Swedish coffee roasting-house Koppi.

The first batch had Guji Natural organic coffee from Sidamo, Ethiopia.

The second batch had Odoo Shakiso Coffee from Ethiopia.

Brewed at De Proefbrouwerij, Belgium.

Bottle - I get a light amount coffee in nose. I get some hoppiness in the taste. Sweet flavour with caramel, pine, bread, citrus and coffee notes Quite fullbodied, creamy texture and soft carbonation. The finish is more dry with a pleasant bitterness. Im still not sure what to think about this beers. Coffee in an IPA seems weird, but it a lot better than I thought it would be.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of May 2014. Picked up recently from Trembling Madness in York. The label states that this is the Tomahawk x Guji Natural version; a blend of hops and Ethiopian coffee.

Poured into a Duvel tulip. A very hazy orange-amber hue with low carbonation. Yields a huge head of frothy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a surface layer. Aroma of bitter roasted coffee beans and light notes of citrus hops with a hint of lemon. Underpinned by subtle caramel malt with a faint sweetness. Quite a restrained aroma, though the raw coffee notes comes across.

Tastes of intense roasted coffee beans and mild aromatic hops, with considerable bitterness on the finish. Raw notes of roasted coffee with a slightly 'green' character - very much a whole, unprocessed bean flavour. Underneath this lie subtler hints of pine and faint citrus hops, accompanied by a caramel malt backbone and a spicy quality. Very dry, with a powerful, astringent bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and spicy, with a lovely, velvety body. Undercarbonated and slightly flat. Highly astrigent, with an aftertaste of bitter coffee beans and aromatic hop notes.

This is fantastic. My initial impression was that the coffee and hop flavours didn't go together, but the blend just grows on you as you drink. Intensely raw, bitter coffee with superb depth of flavour, combined with lighter aromatic hop notes - this is an unparalleled drinking experience. The only minor flaws are the lack of carbonation and the rather uninspiring appearance - but the flavour is where true judgement lies. Mikkeller have done it again; a crazy, over-the-top mix that sounds insane but works brilliantly. I'd grab another if they weren't so damned expensive. If you love coffee and/or extraordinary experiences, then this is the brew for you. Don't pass it up.

On tap at Max and Joe's here in Omaha. Pours super hazy caramel orange color with a tiny frothy head - for the little amount of foam it leaves some nice stringy lacing around the glass. Sweet caramel and subtle creamy coffee notes mingle with sweet citrusy hops in the nose. The flavor is odd, can't really determine what exactly I'm getting but there is bitter semisweet chocolate notes and a backing of citrus and piny hops, the coffee comes through in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is excellent - soft and smooth, nearly full bodied with moderate carbonation that brings it all together on the palate. Pretty funky beer, wouldn't expect coffee in an ipa to be rounded out and as drinkable as this but it was surprisingly delicious.

Thanks to Jack and Staples Corner for this delicious growler fill! Poured to a tulip glass.

A - Pours a hazy amber eluding to an awesome 2-3 finger head thick and rich with micro carb bubbles dispersing random bb size toppers. A long lasting head which is thick and frothy providing great retention and heavy lacing.

S - There is a very mild whiff on this beer with some underlying tones of citrus hops and sweet malt(s), but not much on the coffee contributor. A semi sweet aroma stands prevalent.

T - Easy introduction to the palate with mild semi sweet citrus taste followed by a nice balance of malt finishing with some low key bittering and finally that hit of coffee. Though light in it's presence, the coffee finds it's place towards the finish which may be the perp regarding the strong sweet & sour finish.

M - Smooth for a medium bodied beer. Gentle introduction with a semi strong and mildly sour finish. Again, finally the coffee shows up !!! The more this beer leans towards medium room temperature the more the coffee announces it's presence. Perhaps a hidden quality if consumed under the proper circumstances.

O - While the coffee addition may be misleading upfront, this IPA is rather tasty overall. If one allows the beer to settle and gain some temperature the coffee element comes forward exponentially. By itself minus the coffee ingredient it is a very drinkable beer. With some patience, one might find that the "sniper" in this brew (coffee) can be found if the consumer will allow the beer to rest just like a great steak..

My prescription: Though a little pricey, this one is worth a taste. A nice marriage between two basic elements which do not go hand in hand. We mostly ascribe coffee flavors to beer regarding stouts. This one worked well for me as the coffee contribution was not the prevalent up front flavor aggressing or leading the IPA as expected in most stouts similarly titled, but this is an IPA, not a stout. Instead the answer to this label which challenged the beer's description, ended up being the finish which leads to a decent transition wrapping up business sip for sip with the rogue agent revealing it's identity mildly at the end. Since you can't get it all the time I'd say it's worth trying if you have the time.

Poured from a 1 pt 9.4 fl oz bottle into a pint glass. Brewed & bottled by Mikkeller at De Proef Brouwerij, Lochristi-Hijfte, Belgium. This is the Citra x Michiti version.

Appearance: Pours a wort-colored soupy brown, with a thinner off-white head. Looks like a glass of iced tea.

Smell: Phenomenal hop aroma bursting out of the bottle (I love Citra hops!) Once in the glass, the Michiti coffee aroma takes over and is also amazing.

Taste: Tastes like iced coffee, brewed with citrusy, tropical fruit flavored hops. This is really nice!

Mouthfeel: Perfect mouthfeel to complement the coffee and hop flavors. Not too thin, not too thick, but with a surprising amount of carbonation, which adds an interesting layer of complexity.

Overall: Not being a regular coffee drinker, but always loving the aroma/flavor of coffee, I wasn't sure what to expect. I already mentioned my love of Citra hops. This is a great combination. I just hope it doesn't keep me up all night!

I had this beer on tap at Monks in Philly. I was intrigued by the notion of a coffee IPA because I wanted to be venturous and have a complex style of beer. I was feeling a little bold.
On-tap into a tulip glass.

A - Hazy, cloudy burnt orange color with amber/ruby hints. Creamy lacy head that was ressiliant.
S - There was citrus in the head and no coffee which supprised me. I was looking hard for a few notes and didn't find any. Still the citrus was light and nice.
T & M & D - Citrus clean font on this beer with malty sweetness and a few roast tones. Once again I had to go searching for the coffee and I found a few notes of it on the back end in the back of the palate. Other than that the beer was clean and medium bodied with a mild level of carbination.
The beer was nice, but nothing that popped and made you say wow. A good/decent beer.

A-Cloudy slightly copper colored gold with tons of fluffy slightly golden foam. Leaves nice lacing on the glass. Fades to a nice layer of foam on the surface of the beer.
S-Strong citurs hop aroma, slightly sweet.
T-Hops dominate with a slightly citurs flavor and some resiny/pine hop bite. There is a very nice malt balance to the hop flavor. I really don't taste coffee in this.
M-Slightly sweet with a fairly full body. Lots of carbonation. Finishes a little dry.
Overall, this is a good IPA, actually a very good IPA. It's very tasty with a great malt/hop balance. I'm not sure where the coffee comes in because I didn't smell or taste any.

Reviewed from notes.

Poured into my glass stein a lightly hazed amber color with enormous fluffy white foam topping for several minutes, large loops of sticky lacing left behind as it slowly recedes....very pretty beer and a lot lighter in color than I had expected for a coffee beer. I can stick a finger in the head and scoop up solid clumps like a merengue!

And there is almost no coffee smell at all in the nose. Seriously. The aroma is a blend of spice and tea, but mostly a melange of savory herbal sort of aromas over the top of light pine resin.

The coffee exists quite strongly in the flavor, despite being absent from the nose. Some toasted bread and pine with earthy noble hopping and a squeeze of grapefruit rind, semi-acrid coffee finishes up.

Creamy smooth texture and medium-high carbonation.

Poured from a bomber into a Sam Adams pint.

A: Pours a hazy, golden copper color with two fingers of boisterous head. Strong retention and lace.

S: Mellow citrus and peach, a bit on the sweet side, nice.

T: Leads with coffee and then the malts come in quickly underneath. A bit of pine hoppiness emerges on the finish. Hmm, this is pretty interesting. After a while, some sweet nectar joins the coffee in the finish, and later still a hint of toffee.

M: Medium light body with a little cream and a hint of oil.

O: Well, what do you know, this is pretty tasty. Wasn't sure what to expect, it's like a coffee stout in some ways but an IPA in others. On the whole, pretty unique and I would definitely buy it again. Another fine showing for Mikkeller.

A: 2.5 finger off white head on a nice cloudy copper body. very nice lacing.

S: pine and earthy hops nicely blended with caramel malts and a subtle but nicely included espresso/coffee note.

T: very interesting beer. the hops up front are mostly citrus, earthy and some floral which fade in and out hereafter yielding to a soft but well applied coffee and espresso flavor which also provides a mild grassy bitterness.

M: medium body and moderate to high carbonation.

Overall: not an everyday beer but the transition and complexity of the flavors is certainly memorable.
