On draft at Churchkey in D.C.

The beer is amber orange hued with a finger of white head. The aroma offers citrus hops with a bit of malt. A nice, inviting scent. The flavor brings a nice helping of citra hops, with a fairly substantial malt body. Easily the best of the Mikkeller single hop series. This variation actually tasted like an IPA. That said, this is still nowhere near the quality of the upper tier examples of the style. Worth a try.

Bottle poured into my duvel snifter.

Haven't been writing reviews lately, bought a bunch of single hop beers and gonna start reviewing again

Single Hop Citra IPA by mikkeller has that wonderful citra hop aroma that is very distinctive, lots of grapefruit and slight pine in this one. Nice mouthfeel to this one as well, the 88 ibu were masked very well, not overally bitter like a lot of IPA i have had lately. Taste was delicious, good start to my single hop mikkeller week of brews

Bottle poured into a shaker pint glass. Orange label (unlike that pictured here) and new to shops here, this must be a second batch or re-release. Similar look to other Mikkeller single hop IPAs, as one might expect: A light bronze hue with a large quantity of frothy off-white head that sits there like dish suds. Aroma is rather malty, toffee and a little chocolate, but with a fresh orange juice and tropical fruit top note: Pineapple, peaches, passion fruit ... As one would expect from this hop. Flavor largely reflects the nose. I am getting guava and bitter orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime, hash oil, currant preserve, mentholated cough drop (although this is not super intense), vitamin C chewables, jasmine tea. Starts with bitter citrus and tropical musk but I am getting strong floral and green flavors late along with a blast of gooseberry. The Citra hops are more than keeping up with the sturdy malt backbone (cf. Bravo, to name one example. See that review). Moderate to full body and a smooth, oily mouthfeel despite making the mouth tingle. Comes off more carbonated than other Mikkeller single hops I've had to date. Not detrimental. Finish is dank and bitter, dominated by the hops. Read this to mean its pretty great in my current mood state. I rarely go back and compare ratings to validate such a call, but right in the here and now this is my favorite Mikkeller single hop IPA. I might taste gooseberry for another week hence. Wonderful.

Poured from a 333ml bottle into a tulip. Best before on the cap (assuming that's what it is) is 20/10/13.

A - amber orange and cloudy, two finger head that lingers for a few minutes and leaves behind an edge of lacing.

S - some great fruit on the nose, initially apple and later lychee - gets more intense over time. A hint of toastiness in the background

T - wonderful tropical fruit right up front on the taste; considerably less bitter than some of Mikkeller's other IPAs, but delightfully subtle and tasty. Start fruity, then bitter and the finishes with lychee. Really no malt at all; at least none apparent, but still balanced.

M - light/medium body with light/medium carbonation; still a little creamy in its finish, but not oily. No alcohol warming.

This is a very tasty, and very interesting instalment in the Mikkeller single hop series. Highlights for me are this one (Citra) and Nelson Sauvin. Both very fruity and balanced. This is a very interesting IPA and has potential to lure in folks that aren't familiar with IPAs. Highly recommended.

Orange pour and a full inch of head, impressive on a hoppy beer. His that straightforward citrus aroma in the nose.

Still hits the citra on the tongue, good light toasted malts don't interfere with the hop. Very expensive beer though, there are plenty of other citra beers that you don't have to ship half way around the world, and at $7 for a 12oz beer, this is kinda ridiculous to ever purchase again, despite it being one of the better single hop examples I've had.

Nice orange pour, about 1" of head, looks very nice. Good citra aroma, no mistakes about that one. Not overpowering, just right.

More citrus flavoring, pale malt body allows this to be one of the best single hop offerings of any brewer, much less Mikkeller. Carbonation on point, only negative in the mouthfeel would be hoping for a little more of the fresh hop taste, but coming from halfway around the world, its understandable that the potent aspect of the hop is a little lesser than grabbing something from a geographically closer locale.

Generally, I tend to deduct .5 point on Mikkeller's single hop series for the price, but I didn't here because this one seemed to be one of their best, and it was 'only' $5, whereas I don't bat an eye paying $8 for bombers from this locale, so have at it.

Once again I'll say how much I love the idea for this series. Citra, being a relatively newly used hop as a predominant component in beers particularly interested me (along with Sorachi Ace). I'll agree with gford here that although the nose has quite a bit of citrus, I was surprised at the level of resinous, piney hop flavors in the taste. Pours a slightly cloudy orange, probably just chill haze. A big, grainy head settles down to a cap and leaves copious lacing. Nice lemon and orange citrus aromas along with a whiff of pine and a bit of slightly bready malt. The taste has a blast of pine and bitter orange with some lemon oil and orange zest notes folded into the bitter finish. The bitterness is quite intense and really sticks around. Almost relentless. This makes the mouthfeel quite intense, I'm a hophead but this is almost too much. Really good showcase for the hop itself, but after having this, I'd say this hop would either work best in a blend or with a sweeter malt profile.

330ml bottle poured into tulip 20/2/12

A dark amber with a solid long lasting three fingers of creme colored foam that leaves lots of lace well down the glass

S toffee, citrus, some guava but then again I've been smelling guava in everything lately but tropical nonetheless

T what I smell really, tropical fruits and a little toffee, its straight forward but good

M entry is smooth and silky but then it turns to foam, nice aftertaste lingers faintly

O solid stuff but nothing to put it with the mind-blowers, good for sure and worth trying

solid stuff for sure and I can't wait to plow my way through all the new Mikkeller brews that just entered my neck of the woods

a wildly fruity hop the citra is. this ipa showcases it nicely. the beer pours a hazy sunset orange color with some yeast floaters and a one inch white lace head. the nose is a huge citrus cornucopia, tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, even lime. the flavor is straight tangerine, really fresh fruit juicy hops. there is a touch of pale malts to this, i think less so than some of the other single hop brews. its a little tart in the finish, but still not bitter. that tangerine flavor is lasting in the mouth. feel is good, upbeat carbonation is right for this ipa, and its medium body does not crowd out the delicate tones of the citra hop. this is a hop id like to start brewing with, it has a diverse range of applications, and mikkeller shows it well here.

A: Pours a hazy orange with a 1-inch thick off-white head with some floaties and leaves splotchy lace.

N: Pungent and juicy grapefruit and tangerine with some spicy notes along with yeast and malt.

T: Citrus shines through a floral canopy of hop leaves.

M: Medium body and carbonation. Semi-dry and bitter finish.

O: Straight forward single hop citra. Bottle from cooler and must be fresh.

Pours a caramel brown dark honey, good white head and good lacing.

S - pineapple, big tropical fruit aromas, berries, caramel malt and a nutty hop aroma, full and a bit of sweet pine and a touch of grapefruit, complex but you have to work to get at it.

T - thick fruitiness, dry tannins, lime and dry tropical and nutty and a bit of leather dryness on the finish. Apple, melon, orange, mango, and a full dryness and balanced bitter finish.

M - big feel but really pleasant, moderate carbonation and a bit of malty sweetness, slight bit of hop oils. Drying finish.

Thick rounded flavour, rich citrus and some earthy character on the finish. Enjoyable, with a nice showcase of the citra, as an IPA it really tasty but there are some things about the finish and balance that fall below amazing, still one of the better citra ipas Ive tried. Really crisp and nice character.

From notes 7/24/11. This is a good IPA, though, surprisingly, it doesn’t really stand out in the series for me, and I’m normally a big fan of Citra. The aroma is kinda mild. There’s pineapple, grapes, raspberries and peaches. It’s interesting but a bit underwhelming compared to some Citra beers. Taste seems a bit less bitter than some Mikkeller single hop beers. There’s some definite crystal malt flavor. Fairly dry. A bit of bready malt. Some hop oiliness. Appearance is similar to others in the series - orange-amber with a big off-white head.

330ml bottle drank from a duvel glass

Pours clear and burnt orange with a crisp and oily large white head, excellent retention.

Passionfruit is dominate on the nose, mandarins aswell. Bananas and pineapple are also noted. Delicious.

A lot less hop character on the palate, I feel the maltiness makes the beer a little sweet. Caramel and mandarin are present, and a little more passionfruit. The finish has a light, simple bitterness.

Mouthfeel is great, light, crisp and very easy to drink. This is one of those beers that I wish I could buy by the 6pack.

This is easily the best Mikkeller single hop beer I've tried so far, very refreshing. My only qualm is that I feel it's missing some hop character on the palate, perhaps that's down the hop variety.

A - Big pillowy white head over a pale orange body. Very extensive lacing all the way through.

S - Citrus and pine, lemon, grapefruit backed by a biscuity malt profile.

T - A harder bitterness than some of the others in single hop series, citrus peel, mandarin and caramel. Nice balance.

M - Medium body, quite dry and nicely carbonated.

O - Solid IPA. The citra seems to be quite an intense variety, not my favourite but a good one to provide some punch.

A - pours an excellent honey/copper wit ha slight haze. 3 full fingers of persistent off white head

S - smells like citra hops, good start. a great deal grassier than straight citras

T - Tastes exactly like citra hop flavors. Grassy and citrusy (not so much piny) Tangerine and grapefruit flavors are predominant with the bitterness coming through early on and not lingering.

M - Everything I want in an IPA. Hits the palette hard, carbonation is prominant, then clears out fast. No coating, no thickness. Just leaves behind a citrus grove, nothing else.

O - I think the concept of these single hop IPAs is genius as far as educating on the intricacies of the character of each hop. I've always had a place in my heart for citra and figured this would offer me the best oportunity to evaluate how well they convey the hop as the heart, soul, brain, and reprodcutive system of the beer. I think they did a great job with it. I look forward to trying other hop varieties in this style.

smells very fruity peach pineapple orange grapefruit

taste is like the nose lots of fruity hops with a good amount of malt backbone

mouthfeel - medium body with good amount of carbonation

overall - finally a single hop beer from mikkeller that does not fall short - however i can only imagine what other breweries could do with the citra hop and at a much lower price

A: The beer is copper in color and has a slight haze with a moderate to high amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high beige head that died down every so slowly, consistently leaving a quarter finger high head covering the surface and a webbing of lacing down the sides.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of grapefruit in the nose along with some hints of floral hops and tropical fruits.
T: Like the smell, the taste is very citrusy and flavors of grapefruit and tropical fruits stand out in particular; some hints of the underlying caramel malts are noticeable. There is a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and relatively crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The hops really stand out in this beer and make for a complex taste (even though one variety is used) but it is easy to drink because the bitterness is not overpowering.

A hazy dark amber beer, an off-white head, good lacing, small curtains.

Lemon, pine, resin and bread. Very Citra!

The taste is also very Citra dominated. Brown sweet bread, toffee, lemon, pine resin and needles, very good bitterness.

Medium carbonation, small bubbles, soft, big body, a dry finish.

A nice well hopped brew, surprisingly balanced for a single hop.

Poured into a standard pint glass a rich full copper/bronze with a fluffy large one finger bone white head atop,it settled slowly into a frothy mass.Grapefruit rind and apricot aromas overtop of caramel/biscuit malt,it doesnt punch hard but it smells fresh and inviting. The citra's are a little underwhelming on the palate, they provide a nice citric shot but the sweetish caramel base is large enough to hold them back a little.A solid offering like most of the Mikkeller single hop series (save the srachi ace),it dont blow your mind but is really good.

Rich bottle of IPA, the citra is here, its good, and it demonstrates less than the more ctrussy hops I have had in the series. Floral and above average mouthfeel. Orange to golden body, wth generous off-white head, and thick lace. A good taming of this hop.

Don't let me down Citra hop. Surely you'll be good.

Beer is red to orange and clear with a nice white head, lots of lacing, low carbonation. Looks like beer.

Very obvious aroma of papaya and mango, very nice aroma. Too much alcohol and malt in there though. Almost makes it smell like mango candy.

Beer is sweet but there are definitely hops in there. Lots of tropical fruits on the midpalate and the finish is pretty bitter. I liked this one, probably one of the best of the bunch and it is actually an IPA.

A: Pours a hazy amber with a puffy, pillowy white head.

S: Aromas of lemon, grapefruit, lime, and orange are balanced by delicate caramel and biscuit scents.

T: Fruity, tart, and intense with notes of bitter orange, lemon, kumquat, lime, grapefruit, pine sap, caramel, and biscuits. The finish is fruity and bitter with a delicate balance of citrus and caramel flavors.

M: Medium bodied and dry. Carbonation is present, but is not overly forceful.

O: This is one of the better ales in Mikkeller's Single Hop Series. The intense flavors of this particular varietal are adequately showcased, though I feel that the brewers have done a far better job of showcasing this hop's aromas. All in all, this is a solid American-style IPA that is worth a try.

Not sure of the age on this one. Bottle cap reads 20/10/13 which is optimistic by anyone's standards.

Pours a nice colour. Orange/tangerine. Healthy head, lacing etc.

Nose is funky malt first off. Almost the hydroponics of Cantillon somehow. Pretty damn malty base beer with flashes of citrus dripping through. Certainly a nice nose but not one which is particularly IPA-esque.

Taste is very well balanced and has more of a leafy than citrus character.

Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. The bitterness does mount so that is good.

I mean yer, it's actually very enjoyable to drink this. But it has two drawbacks. It doesn't really showcase or isolate Citra all that well. Also it's fairly pricy. Nevertheless still recommended as it's quite delicious.

330ml bottle poured into a 16oz tulip. No idea if this is two years or two months old. The top says 20/10/13, which I'm assuming means best before October 20th, 2013. The guy helping me at the bottle shop also said they just got the bottles in 4 weeks ago.

A - Pours a murky, nearly opaque rusty-amber color with a billowing head of rocky tan foam lifting out of the glass. Nice head retention, but the lacing didn't last too long after the pour.

S - A wonderful aroma of citrusy grapefruit and orange rind with some herbal pine. The hops are actually sort of spicy and herbal rather than tropical and bright, but there's definitely some lemon citrus here. Bready caramel malt and dense hop oils.

T - A mouthful of wonderful hop juice right off the bat. Bright citrusy flavors of grapefruit and orange fade into a herbal pine finish that permeates the palate, but doesn't overwhelm. The profile pushes out of standard IPA range a bit, and nears a light DIPA. It's not too alcoholic or astringent though, but something just feels off. Bready caramel malt balances a lot. Not really citrusy like I expected citra hops to be. Maybe it's old?

M - Highly carbonated and slight prickly, but foamy, mouth-filling, smooth and creamy. Sort of strange but I like it. For a strong IPA, it doesn't get too oily.

D - I'm usually turned off by dense, heavy IPAs with herbal hop profiles. I prefer the more fruity or citrusy IPAs with a more refreshing profile. This is okay for what it is, but not really what I expected.

Pours cloudy, honey gold on the brownish side with a slight head that leaves a fine coat of lacing.

Sweet citrus with orange and grapefruit and a background of pine as well as floral notes.

Fairly bitter, but well balanced. Quite dry, with some tea flavors. There is a background of sweetness and a modest, lingering finish.

This is a full-bodied beer with some alcohol, a wooly texture, and ample carbonation that is fairly cleansing.

Citra was enjoyed as part of a self-training exercise to distinguish differences in hop varieties. It would make a fine component to a meal.

This was sampled from a pint glass alongside the Challenger Single Hop IPA.
