Working my way through the Mikkeller single hop series.

Poured into a tulip glass, this has a thick foamy head with good retention. Body is a hazy light coppery amber.

Smells subtly of tangerine over a sweet malt base with a little brown sugar.

Predominant taste is orange, which combines with the malty base beer in different ways on the palate. Nicely acidic in the front palate, tastes of slightly bitter orange peel and malt, then a bit more refined sweet orange juice mid palate, which develops into a long finish with orange zest volatiles at the end giving this a dry and bitter ending, which becomes more grapefruit rind in bitterness.

Body is medium and nicely carbonated to produce a creamy mouthfeel.

Overall, a good expression of Citra hops, but the base beer is a bit toomalty.

A: A hazy amber pour with a huge foamy off-white head that sticks around and leaves nice lacing when it finally settles down.

S: Smell is great, especially for a single hop IPA. Nice citrus aroma punctuated maybe with a little caramel.

T: Surprisingly good and complex for such a simple beer. It's easy to see why everyone loves Citra nowadays. Lots of citrus like the nose, with some resinous pine too. A little bready malt follows it up to balance it out.

M: Not bad. A little mouth-coating oil sensation that sticks around for a bit. Bitterness is not too harsh.

O: As mentioned, surprisingly complex and well-balanced given the simple recipe. Most of the single hop IPAs are just experiments and are intriguing to try but tend to lack depth. This one is that and more - it's also quite good and easy to drink at the same time. I think this is the best single hop I've tried thus far.

11.2oz bottle side by side with Galena and Super Galena versions.

Pour is much, much different than the other two version. It pours with an enormous fluffy white head, three inches thick, that sits on top a darker amber body. Color is closer to the Super Galena and darker than the Galena. Sheets of lacing and three times the head of the others.

Aroma is, by far, the best of the three versions I'm sampling. It's got that distinctive Citra character of massive citrus with hints of wood and herbal hops.

The taste isn't as nice as the aroma as the blast of citrus in the nose only translates to a milder pineapple and apricot presence up front. There is more in the way of pine than I got in the aroma and the finish is actually smoother with less bitterness than the Galenas.

The mouthfeel is smoother than the other two with softer carbonation.

This is the clear winner of the three I tried tonight. It shows why Citra is all the rage these days as it brings a really distinctive and flavorful character to a beer. This is one of the Mikkeller single hops that could stand alone as a really solid IPA with no other hop additions.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. I think this is the best of the second round of Mikkeller single hop beers.

The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the citrus notes. I get a lot of orange, as well as a little bit of papaya and some biscuit malt.

The flavor is full of tropical fruit. I get a ton of mango, apricot and orange, with some grass and pine also mixed in. There is also some biscuit malt and the bitterness is low.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Cap numbered 8231103! Served from bottle into Stone nonic. Poured yellow-orange with a five finger off-white fluffy head that subsided to two and a half finger very slowly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, citrus, and citrus hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, citrus, citrus hop, and subtle grapefruit. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. I had a feeling I was going to like this one before even having it as some of my favorite IPA/IIPAs use Citra as their main ingredient. This one did not disappoint. While still not my favorite out of the series, the citrus aspect really shines through on this one. A definite must try from the series if you get the chance for sure!

A - Very dark amber with a very thick white head. A little bit of sediment floating around in the glass and you can't see through the glass.

S - Citrus and sugars. Reminds me so Simcoe hops.

T - Super smooth hops right up front. When I smelled it I thought the hops would be very bitter and have the bite of Simcoe, but the Citra hits the tongue like a pillow. Perfect blend of malts on the back leaving a bitter sweet flavor of citrus, hops, and flowers. Wonderful IPA.

M - Super carbonated and really keeps a full head on the beer as you drink it down. Citrus flavors really mask the alcohol.

O - Pleasantly surprised with this showing from MIkkeller. I'm starting to be a true believer in the Citra hop and the beers that it produces.

exp Oct 10th 2013.

A: highly carbonated. gushing upon uncapping. Root beer float head, rich amber color with large chunks of suspended sediment, hazy with barely any visible rising carbonation. Resembles many Belgian Tripels.
S: like sea-buckthorn (sanddorn) ice cream. christmas spicy
T: woody, persimmon. I thought "citra" would resemble "citrus" but it's no where near it. slight bitterness, but not really sweet but has a fairly rich, solid and unique flavor. With some other sort of fruitiness, like pear juice. Very nice, cinnamon bread after taste.
M: Light to medium body, with a quick dull sting.
O: This one is pretty special. The richness, well roundedness and uniqueness is well above average. I really like it.

Notes from several weeks ago; picked up a bottle of this over in NY State. I had heard about this single hop series and someone recommended the Citra to me over the other options. Which with the cost of them, I appreciated a recommendation.
Appearance is a nice orange tone, kinda hazy. Its` nose has lemon peel, grapefruit, pine, floral notes including a bit of canibus. The nose is really something, a lot of flavors going on. For the taste, I came across citrus, grass, bread, hops. MF is medium with a bitter finish. This was a very good beer, happy with the purchase, albeit a pricey one.

Bottle shared by Chris (spycow). Some random code on the bottlecap doesn't particularly clarify freshness. Served in a Struise cervoise.

A - Giant orange-tinged foam with great retention and glass-coating lace. Transparent golden orange body. Looks exactly like a Citra Single Hop IPA should!

S - Smells like Citra hops, but lacks the potency found in American single hop offerings like Zombie Dust. Plenty of orange, but without the chive and dank notes I often get from Citra. The malt backdrop is fairly unobtrusive icing sugar flavor.

T - Taste is again quite orange-heavy, but with notes of chive and herbal zest this time. Sugary malt backbone, and fairy mild bitterness in the aftertaste.

M - Grainy medium body, pleasant medium-low carbonation, and a super resinous residual texture.

D - I had no problem putting down 6oz of this one, and I'd actually have it again if these weren't so damn expensive. Perhaps this will show up on-tap at Local Option in the near future. Probably the best thing I've had from this series.

Surprisingly cloudy for an IPA. Deep amber with a small tight white head. The smell is loaded with whole leaf hops, but not fresh. Very leafy and herbal Citra all the way. A touch of lemon, but not all that much. Light base malt allows the single hop to shine (which is the idea here).

The taste is what you'd expect from a Mikkeller, except wait a minute, where the booze? no where, thats where. All whole leaf Citra. not dry hopped fruitiness, but straight whole leaf hops. Very leafy and grassy. Hints of lemon and grapefruit, but its all leaf. Base malt is only there enough to give it body.

Im totally astounded by how hidden the alcohol is. Its all hops and hints of base malt, but the 7% is totally hidden by the flavors. An amazing feat by Mikkeller.

This was a nice gift with a $6.49 price tag attached to the 11.2 oz bottle. This bad boy was served up in a New Holland Tulip glass.

A- Maybe my pour had a lil too much thrust, but thsi beer exhibited a two inch thick head that floated above the lips of the glass for a while. Color was off orange, a lil' dirty.

S- Sweet grapefruit and citusy (sp) goodness.
T- Cirtrus without hints of pine. Definitey not that hoppy (to my standards anyway)
M- Leave a nice lingering carbonation with some biteterness that resembles a not too tart grapefruit.
O- Definitely would have again, more likely drink it if I wanted to splurge on a hop specific IPA. A great beer that was a nice treat to have, but due to the price, I have to give it a lower rating.
Cheers

Golden amber in color, thick white head (you could create a sculpture with it!).

Spicy, citrusy, and sweet smell. Very banana-like...lots of other fruit-like notes (like a fruit cocktail...).

Glass-smooth mouthfeel. Light and refreshing. Strong malt taste with a refreshing light fruitiness in the background. Solid bitterness in the finish - not too light, not too strong...

Another interesting single-hop IPA from Mikkeller. There is a certain lightness overall, probably due to this hop variety, yet there is still plenty of traditional IPA malt sweetness and body with a decent enough IPA bitterness. Different but intriguingly interesting...

A-The beer pours a burnt orange hue. The liquid is quite hazy. An aggressive pour creates a large, tight off-white head with a slight yellow undertone. The head is pretty huge, and it retains excellently. Wondering how I am going to get my lips past the head. The beer laces very well.

S-The aroma is rather light. Lively citrus scent is the main attraction. A bit floral as well. The sweet maltiness balances out the nose. The aroma is attractive but not very bold.

T-The flavor is also not exceptionally powerful but it is quite tasty. This beer tastes like fresh clementines in my opinion. I can see why, when paired with other hop varieties of hops, the citra would add an absolutely delicious dimension to the overall flavor. This beer is mildly bitter and leaves a decent aftertaste. The sweetness from the malt balances this beer out quite well.

M-The feel is very creamy and a bit sticky. I enjoy the oily mouthfeel here. The carbonation is smooth and mellow. The feel is one of the best parts of the beer.

O/D-Overall, I am a fan of this beer. I do not love it but I do love how this beer exemplifies the potential of the Citra hop. The flavor is mostly mild but definitely enoyable. At about $5.75 for a 12 oz. bottle, I would be cautious to try another one of these single hop bottles. Pretty good, but not exeptional.
