Bottle poured into a shaker pint glass. Orange label (unlike that pictured here) and new to shops here, this must be a second batch or re-release. Similar look to other Mikkeller single hop IPAs, as one might expect: A light bronze hue with a large quantity of frothy off-white head that sits there like dish suds. Aroma is rather malty, toffee and a little chocolate, but with a fresh orange juice and tropical fruit top note: Pineapple, peaches, passion fruit ... As one would expect from this hop. Flavor largely reflects the nose. I am getting guava and bitter orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime, hash oil, currant preserve, mentholated cough drop (although this is not super intense), vitamin C chewables, jasmine tea. Starts with bitter citrus and tropical musk but I am getting strong floral and green flavors late along with a blast of gooseberry. The Citra hops are more than keeping up with the sturdy malt backbone (cf. Bravo, to name one example. See that review). Moderate to full body and a smooth, oily mouthfeel despite making the mouth tingle. Comes off more carbonated than other Mikkeller single hops I've had to date. Not detrimental. Finish is dank and bitter, dominated by the hops. Read this to mean its pretty great in my current mood state. I rarely go back and compare ratings to validate such a call, but right in the here and now this is my favorite Mikkeller single hop IPA. I might taste gooseberry for another week hence. Wonderful.

A - Big pillowy white head over a pale orange body. Very extensive lacing all the way through.

S - Citrus and pine, lemon, grapefruit backed by a biscuity malt profile.

T - A harder bitterness than some of the others in single hop series, citrus peel, mandarin and caramel. Nice balance.

M - Medium body, quite dry and nicely carbonated.

O - Solid IPA. The citra seems to be quite an intense variety, not my favourite but a good one to provide some punch.

Drank from my Duvel tulip

A - Pours a deep copper colour with a large bubbled off white head that reduces fast and laces, has floaties in it.

S - Mainly buttery malts with a backup of hop, might not be that fresh.

T - Up front some bitterness followed by small amounts of hop followed by a buttery malty finish.

M - Medium body with low to medium carbonation.

O - Not the best offering of this series, would like to try fresh.

Served on tap in a snifter at Local Option.

Appearance: As with the other Mikkeller single hops, this has a full golden caramel color with a dollop of creamy white foam on top. Hazy. A healthy amount of lace coats the glass.

Smell: A fair amount of caramel and biscuity sweetness seems to overhwhelm the mango and citrus hop aroma. Was this not dry hopped (or not dry hopped enough)?

Taste: The flavor starts out with a caramel and honey sweetness with some biscuity malt flavor as well. The mango, pineapple, and citrus flavor that I would expect is actually a little bit subdued, with some sticky pine hoppiness taking away from the fruit flavor. The finish has a lingering bitterness to it.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, although this does not have as light of a feel as some of the others. The carbonation edges in the direction of creamy, and there is a soft graininess to the feel. After a few minutes, this begins to lose its carbonation quickly, which is unfortunate.

Overall: This was fairly disappointing. Lately Citra hops have been all the craze, and for good reason. I have been seeking out anything with Citra in it, and this was the worst one I have had so far. Not to say that this was a terrible beer overall, but rather that the execution of the hops was not up to snuff.

Served on tap in an over sized wine glass.

The beer pours dark dark orange with a nice one finger head. Smells of citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit with a dry breaddy malt backbone. This beer has a nice full feel to it, far from watered down but still rather drinkable. It is very citrus oriented, Mostly grapefruit and some astringency. The beer is quite bitter but its a rather malt heavy IPA. Its not the thin feeling hop heavy IPA that I am used to but it is a welcome change of pace.

Overall, this is a good IPA, my first from Mikkeller, I hope to see their other offering around.

Pours a nice golden amber with a fat head, nice lace.

The scent is floral perfume and grapefruit. Pale and slight caramalt.

The taste is pale malts with a bitch slap of flowers and grapefruit. A little sticky in the mouth.

One of the more fun of the single hop series.

Not sure of the age on this one. Bottle cap reads 20/10/13 which is optimistic by anyone's standards.

Pours a nice colour. Orange/tangerine. Healthy head, lacing etc.

Nose is funky malt first off. Almost the hydroponics of Cantillon somehow. Pretty damn malty base beer with flashes of citrus dripping through. Certainly a nice nose but not one which is particularly IPA-esque.

Taste is very well balanced and has more of a leafy than citrus character.

Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. The bitterness does mount so that is good.

I mean yer, it's actually very enjoyable to drink this. But it has two drawbacks. It doesn't really showcase or isolate Citra all that well. Also it's fairly pricy. Nevertheless still recommended as it's quite delicious.

Surprisingly cloudy for an IPA. Deep amber with a small tight white head. The smell is loaded with whole leaf hops, but not fresh. Very leafy and herbal Citra all the way. A touch of lemon, but not all that much. Light base malt allows the single hop to shine (which is the idea here).

The taste is what you'd expect from a Mikkeller, except wait a minute, where the booze? no where, thats where. All whole leaf Citra. not dry hopped fruitiness, but straight whole leaf hops. Very leafy and grassy. Hints of lemon and grapefruit, but its all leaf. Base malt is only there enough to give it body.

Im totally astounded by how hidden the alcohol is. Its all hops and hints of base malt, but the 7% is totally hidden by the flavors. An amazing feat by Mikkeller.

330 ml bottle poured into a tulip
thanks to Mr Kennedy for sourcing this

A-- Poured a dark honey orange color. Quit hazy looking but a good hue to this. BIG, massive light brownish sandpaper looking head. Three fingers. Fades pretty quickly to a nice, thick collar. Good lacing left when the head recedes. Also good head retention when swirling this.

S-- Big malt backbone, followed by almost all tangerine nose. Slight notes of grapefruit peel.

T-- Carmel backbone followed by tangerine, orange marmalade, grapefruit, and pine.

M-- Low carbonation, medium body and quite oily. Bitterness is in the mid and back palate. Orange and grapefruit finish that is heavier than in the mouth.

O-- Not a bad IPA. Then again I do think Mikkeller does make good IPA's. Good balance to this and quite drinkable. Hop qualities do shine well through the backbone.

Working my way through the Mikkeller single hop series.

Poured into a tulip glass, this has a thick foamy head with good retention. Body is a hazy light coppery amber.

Smells subtly of tangerine over a sweet malt base with a little brown sugar.

Predominant taste is orange, which combines with the malty base beer in different ways on the palate. Nicely acidic in the front palate, tastes of slightly bitter orange peel and malt, then a bit more refined sweet orange juice mid palate, which develops into a long finish with orange zest volatiles at the end giving this a dry and bitter ending, which becomes more grapefruit rind in bitterness.

Body is medium and nicely carbonated to produce a creamy mouthfeel.

Overall, a good expression of Citra hops, but the base beer is a bit toomalty.

Pours with a thick, foamy head and active carbonation. Eventually, the head recedes, leaving very little lacing on the glass. It has kind of a murky, light rust color. Bright smelling. Notes of butter, cheese and lemon. Taste is mildly fruity and lightly piney with a mildly astringent aftertaste. Malts are pronounced, which is unsurprising given that this was probably hanging around the shop for a good long time. Mouthfeel is light and bubbly, the carbonation adding a good amount of bite. This is actually quite drinkable for its likely age, and is probably a good bit better fresh.

A - Very dark amber with a very thick white head. A little bit of sediment floating around in the glass and you can't see through the glass.

S - Citrus and sugars. Reminds me so Simcoe hops.

T - Super smooth hops right up front. When I smelled it I thought the hops would be very bitter and have the bite of Simcoe, but the Citra hits the tongue like a pillow. Perfect blend of malts on the back leaving a bitter sweet flavor of citrus, hops, and flowers. Wonderful IPA.

M - Super carbonated and really keeps a full head on the beer as you drink it down. Citrus flavors really mask the alcohol.

O - Pleasantly surprised with this showing from MIkkeller. I'm starting to be a true believer in the Citra hop and the beers that it produces.

exp Oct 10th 2013.

A: highly carbonated. gushing upon uncapping. Root beer float head, rich amber color with large chunks of suspended sediment, hazy with barely any visible rising carbonation. Resembles many Belgian Tripels.
S: like sea-buckthorn (sanddorn) ice cream. christmas spicy
T: woody, persimmon. I thought "citra" would resemble "citrus" but it's no where near it. slight bitterness, but not really sweet but has a fairly rich, solid and unique flavor. With some other sort of fruitiness, like pear juice. Very nice, cinnamon bread after taste.
M: Light to medium body, with a quick dull sting.
O: This one is pretty special. The richness, well roundedness and uniqueness is well above average. I really like it.

Peter Paul from de Molen brewery recommended me this beer, thanks man for pointing it out.

A - A deep soft amber color mixed with pink!? Is this for real? This color is so nice and different. The head is big and off white. The foam stays present quite long and after a while it becomes fluffy. The are carbonation bubbles visible that try to get up.

S - A good strong smell of peaches, pine, grass and last but certainly not least citrus (of course). This is so inviting that you have to take a gulp right away. To keep your emotion under control after smelling it is hard and feels like a torture. This is how every IPA should smell.

T - WOW!!!! I am normally not a real IPA fan, but this changed my opinion. What a strong bitter taste that becomes creamy after a while. The bitterness leaves your tongue dazzled as if it was stung by a bee. The beer stays fersh in taste all the way. Light sweet up front and for the rest every thing like the smell gave away.

M - This beer is creamy in your mouth, but not at all sticky! The body is quite full & tasty and that for a 6,9% ABV!! I think it is quite exceptional.

O - What an exceptional different beer! One should try this in the morning. It wakes you up and I am certain it will keep you in a positive mood all day.

A: Mahogany in color with copper highlights and a long lasting off-white head. Small amounts of lacing. TONS of globby yeast sediment. This would be a decent looking beer without the yeast.

S: Perfume of sweet melon (maybe canteloupe?), some lychee, fruity sticky munich-ish malts, and a hint of alcohol on the end. A pretty damn good smelling IPA, but restrained for an all Citra-beer. No cat pee, onion or resin.

T: A well mannered, tame american IPA leaning towards sweet. Bottle says 80 IBU but this tastes more like 50.

M: Medium mouthfeel, easy drinking and refreshing.

Too malt-foward a bit stale on the nose to be great, but not a bad IPA.

Poured into a pint glass- pours a hazy orange/brown color with two fingers of head that stay for a somewhat unnervingly long time with puffy lacing.

The smell is definitely citrus- lemon, grapefruit, and resin. Good, but nowhere near as inviting as some of the great IPAs.

The taste is sweet throughout- definitely some piney resin up front followed by lemon, then grapefruit and then it gives way to malt sweetness with a little residual bitterness.

Mouthfeel is decent but a little too syrupy. Medium body with moderate carbonation and a little sticky. This is an interesting beer but not one I'd seek out (I just saw it and decided to give it a whirl).

12oz bottle into a tulip glass

$5.99 at Diciccos in brewster

No date on bottle

A- Pours a nice golden honey orange with a 1 finger fluffy off white head that isn't going anywhere due to tons of carbonation streaming up from the bottom of the glass. Leaves some crazy lacing on the glass as well. Really nice looking IPA.

S- Fruity tropical notes with hints of citrus and caramel from the malts.

T- Unfortunately I bought this warm so I think the hops faded quite a bit. But otherwise getting fruity tropical fruits like the aroma. Lots of grapefruit or pineapple, but are quickly taken over by fresh grass and dank resin. Also a slight sweetness from the malts and a decent fullness from the alcohol.

M- Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a strong bitter finish.

330ml bottle from the International Beer Shop, thanks to bluebetty for picking this up. Poured into a Great Divide Cervoise goblet.

Large bubbled off-white head of foam sits on top of an orange-amber coloured beer. Nice pillowy head that falls slowly and laces well.

Nice tropical fruit aroma backed with a little bit of an odd earthy smell that detracts a touch.

Tastes of grapefruit and plenty of it. Some malt backing comes in later to offset it a touch.

Decent bitterness throughout, not excessive however. Nice mredium body and easy to drink.

Mikkeller does the single hops well, not amazing, but good beers that you know will showcase the hop well and still be enjoyable.

330ml bottle poured into a 16oz tulip. No idea if this is two years or two months old. The top says 20/10/13, which I'm assuming means best before October 20th, 2013. The guy helping me at the bottle shop also said they just got the bottles in 4 weeks ago.

A - Pours a murky, nearly opaque rusty-amber color with a billowing head of rocky tan foam lifting out of the glass. Nice head retention, but the lacing didn't last too long after the pour.

S - A wonderful aroma of citrusy grapefruit and orange rind with some herbal pine. The hops are actually sort of spicy and herbal rather than tropical and bright, but there's definitely some lemon citrus here. Bready caramel malt and dense hop oils.

T - A mouthful of wonderful hop juice right off the bat. Bright citrusy flavors of grapefruit and orange fade into a herbal pine finish that permeates the palate, but doesn't overwhelm. The profile pushes out of standard IPA range a bit, and nears a light DIPA. It's not too alcoholic or astringent though, but something just feels off. Bready caramel malt balances a lot. Not really citrusy like I expected citra hops to be. Maybe it's old?

M - Highly carbonated and slight prickly, but foamy, mouth-filling, smooth and creamy. Sort of strange but I like it. For a strong IPA, it doesn't get too oily.

D - I'm usually turned off by dense, heavy IPAs with herbal hop profiles. I prefer the more fruity or citrusy IPAs with a more refreshing profile. This is okay for what it is, but not really what I expected.

A - pours a deep, hazy orange with a rich, lathery head that puffed up quite a bit but settled to a thick cap; lots of lacing left on glass

S - some light malt right away which makes me think this is not super fresh; citrus blossom, lemon peel, bee pollen

T - tastes fresher than aroma though i had no beef at all with either; mild taste overall with lots of hop flavor but not overwhelming with floral or bitter elements; clean taste with bittering finish

M - crisp, neat presentation overall; light-med body with light, active carbonation that is slightly prickly

D - pretty delicious; I would love to have one fresh off the line to compare but had no problems as-is; would love to session this one!

Beautiful deep auburn with a fluffly almost belgian blondesque head to it, which dissipated slowly leaving thick lacing. Overall this expensive 12oz beer was dissapointing as the malts and roasted sweetness really shine through unfortunately when the hops should shine. I picked up light notes of pine and citrus - this would be way better served in almost a nuetral malt character to allow the single variety hops to really shine. Not a bad beer but far from a pure example of hop puriety.

Poured from a 333ml bottle into a tulip. Best before on the cap (assuming that's what it is) is 20/10/13.

A - amber orange and cloudy, two finger head that lingers for a few minutes and leaves behind an edge of lacing.

S - some great fruit on the nose, initially apple and later lychee - gets more intense over time. A hint of toastiness in the background

T - wonderful tropical fruit right up front on the taste; considerably less bitter than some of Mikkeller's other IPAs, but delightfully subtle and tasty. Start fruity, then bitter and the finishes with lychee. Really no malt at all; at least none apparent, but still balanced.

M - light/medium body with light/medium carbonation; still a little creamy in its finish, but not oily. No alcohol warming.

This is a very tasty, and very interesting instalment in the Mikkeller single hop series. Highlights for me are this one (Citra) and Nelson Sauvin. Both very fruity and balanced. This is a very interesting IPA and has potential to lure in folks that aren't familiar with IPAs. Highly recommended.

IPA's without dates scare me, especially overseas IPAs but this one is new in a store with decent turnover so I went for it, wish I hadn't.

Pours a very nice dirty orange color with a thick two finger white head that slowly recedes to a nice thick cap. The smell is very interesting, it reminds me of the street market in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Very sweet, with a palm sugar aroma that has a vegetal undertone, not very complex and not what I would expect from Citra hops. The taste was bitter up front and almost no flavor except for some alcohol heat. The mouthfeel was strange and flaccid. Overall I poured the second half down the drain, not worth it.

From looking at other reviews it seems as though my experience is in the minority, but if you find this beer, make sure it is fresh.

This was a nice surprise. I'm not a fan of grapefruit, in general, and I wouldn't have chosen it if I knew it was, however, the grapefruit/citrus taste was a perfect foil for the hops. The light cloudy yellow color doesn't make a good impression visually, b ut the smell and flavor turn it around.

This is not a drink all day beer, but it might be nice to pair with an open fire cooked meat like pork or venison.

Bottle poured into my duvel snifter.

Haven't been writing reviews lately, bought a bunch of single hop beers and gonna start reviewing again

Single Hop Citra IPA by mikkeller has that wonderful citra hop aroma that is very distinctive, lots of grapefruit and slight pine in this one. Nice mouthfeel to this one as well, the 88 ibu were masked very well, not overally bitter like a lot of IPA i have had lately. Taste was delicious, good start to my single hop mikkeller week of brews
