A: Dark amber colour, nice cm-thick dense head

S: caramel, malts, hint of chocolate, but all very subdued

T: the caramel and malts are there together with the hops giving this a bittersweet taste. Very slight hint of citrus.

M: a bit thin, very dry finish, medium carbonation.

O: Not a bad beer, but not my cup of tea, too thin, no complexity.

330ml bottle poured into tulip.

Pours a murky amber-brown with one finger of tan head that leaves rolling English countryside lace as it recedes. Lots of floaties.

Smells of grapefruit, orange and lemon zest, pineapple slices, brown sugar caramel malt and piney, herbal hops.

Tastes of bitter citrus rind, soft pineapple, sweet bready caramel malt and more resiny hop bitterness.

Feels thick and soft. Medium bodied with assertively frothy carbonation. Finishes really dry.

Verdict: Recommended. Not exactly well-balanced, though.

Pours a pretty clear dark amber with an OK pale tan head. Strong, hoppy aroma has a fruity overtone, a bit sweeter than with most IPAs and more pomme (apple and pear) than citrus. Hoppy flavor has firm malty and fruity notes, a little bitterness and a little fruity sweetness to balance it. Smooth texture has fizz and body a little above average, leaves a hoppy, woody and slightly fruity finish.

Pours a murky dark crimson-brown with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Tiny streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Small chunks of sediment are seen floating around in the beer after the pour. Smell is of toasted malt, candied citrus zest, and brown sugar aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, candied citrus zest, raisin, and earth flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is definitely old at this point, and smells and tastes more like a barleywine than a single hop IPA to me.

Serving type: bottle.

well, these are really old now i think, they havent done them again to my knowledge, so i was probably being a little ambitious when i picked this dusty bottle off a shelf from an unknown bottle shop yesterday just to get another one closer to completing this fabulous series. my hopes were low, and indeed the hops have faded a ton from this, as expected, but its still pretty decent. i mean, it drinks more like a session barleywine now, english really, quite yeasty as i can see in the glass, snow globe style in here, and with a more copper hue than i remember the others having. the head is still thick and khaki colored though, and the nose shows some nice grain base i never really gathered before because i was focused on the hops. now that their are no hops left, it really stands out. the columbus grapefruit thing is long gone, but i still get a little of the vegetal hop thing in the finish. i would say avoid this one now, unless they make it again, or unless you are a diehard mikkeller fanboy like me and just have to try everything he does no matter what... this probably rocked like the other ones when it was fresh.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass (yeah ... I use these glasses a lot. They transfer aromas very well). The last of the Mikkeller single hop IPAs lurking in my fridge and what a ride its been. This one has the tell take look, a ruddy brown amber color with a gorgeous frothy beige head that just sits there like a snow cone or something. Unusually intricate lacing left on glass. The gaudy head gives way fairly quickly and we get an aroma featuring caramel and raisin malt notes front and center but accompanied by a developing hop spice, fruity and dank with some brown spice and citrus accents. Of all of these brews I have tried to date, this one may indeed strike the best malt-hops balance. There is an assertive spicy resin character throughout, tobacco, red berries and Dr. Pepper-like botanicals lurking in the background along with some low key yellow and pink grapefruit rinds and a medicinal gin-like vibe that stops well short of aggressive pine. The malts are sweet and juicy, some toffee and a whiff of chocolate (!) providing a perfect foil to the oily spiciness from the Columbus. Pleasantly chewy body and low key carbonation. A major citrus iced tea flavor comes on strong late. I have known single hop Columbus brews to come off far more medicinal and bitter than this, which certainly tingles the palate but reigns in most of the excesses in favor of a very smooth, flavorsome yet refined approach.

Purchased at Five Points Bottle Shop in the Classic City of Athens, GA.

Appearance 4.25: Poured out a lovely, golden brown. Decent 1/2" head and good lacing. What really put it over the top for me, however, was the particulates floating around. Lots of little hops bits and who-knows-what. So lovely.

Smell 4.0: Very nice bouquet. Smell of sharp, acidic hops mixed with a very strong malt scent. Very promising.

Taste 3.75: Front is malty and somewhat dry. Middle is big and malty; this is a sharp malt flavor and also very biscuit-like. Large hit of big malt in the middle of the palate at this level along with a sharp, bitter and dry hit of hops in the front of the mouth. Interesting balance. Finish is silky-smooth, with a pleasant caramel taste and a dry mouthfeel at the end. Aftertaste is short, but nice with a final focus on the alkaline hops. Taste is good, but it is like a chimera: a lot of these taste-levels just do not match up with each other.

Mouthfeel 3.75: Good and smooth conditioning level; good representative of this type of brew.

Overall 3.75: A mixed bag. Great appearance, great bouquet, but kind of a let down in the taste department. The label states that they brewed one big batch of wort and then seasoned different little batches with different hops. That may be why this beer is off on several levels: the wort wasn't tailored to the specific hop. This beer is good, but in my opinion, a much better representative of the Columbus hop can be found in Asheville Brewing's Shiva IPA.
