This bottle could be a dud or not handled well. Tastes and smells like Limburger cheese. The body and acidity are good but I can’t get over the cheesiness

375ml bottle

Pours a cloudy hazy near opaque dark ruby red with a dense creamy light pinkish off-white foam head with lasting retention and good lacing, sticking around forever. Smells immediately fruity and soured, tart funky blackcurrants, notes of dried cranberry, leathery grapes, dark forest berries, sweet vinegar, dessert wine, dried leaves, oak barrel, some woody spice, and mild dusty earthy herbal hops. Moderately fruity and funky, kinda bretty smelling, a little leathery, earthy, bold blackcurrants. Tastes really tart and puckery, fresh sour blackcurrants, dried cranberry notes, leathery grapes, funky tart berries, dark forest fruit, acidic citrus, slightly acetic sherry dessert wine, dried autumn leaves, hay, oak barrel, some woody spice, wheaty malt, vanilla, and mild dusty earthy herbal hops. Moderate high level of acidity and tartness, moderately fruity, light funk and barnyard earthiness. Feels medium bodied, creamy smooth and slick with moderate high carbonation, finishing fairly dry. Overall this is a really nice lambic style sour ale with blackcurrants aged in oak.

A - Largely opaque, burgundy color combining red and purple highlights, with a white head tinted pink, and lots of lacing.

S - Sour berry notes, a bit of wood, lots of acidity.

T - Follows the nose, with a big front of berry, hinting raspberry and cranberry, a middle where wood notes come out, and a moderate acidic bite closing with a slow fade.

M - Moderate sourness, tart, but not puckering.

O - A well-crafted lambic with great fruit notes. A carefully balanced and bright lambic.

The beer has a beatiful, dark purple color. Clear to a little hazy with a thin, pink head.

Nose: Tart, sour, black currant, vanilla, oak an a lot of sweetness.
Taste: Funk, tart, red berries, black currant, dry wood, fruity. Reminds me of POPPELS Projekt 007 - I got to do a parallell tasting!
Mouthfeel: Medium body. Medium to high carbonation. Dry ending.

A great fruit lambic. I'm glad I got back to #Systembolaget and bought a few more bottles yesterday :)

one of my favorites in the spontan lineup, the black currant. its got a great chalky purple color to it, true to the fruit and like i have never seen in a beer before. frothy head on it, more cloudiness than many of the others, but more carbonation too. smells jammy sweet, like a cross between blackberry and cranberry, its sweet and dark but also tangy. i think the pucker in the nose is largely brought on by the wild yeasts, which are as established and mature in this one as they are in any of the beers. a great mix of bretty funk in here, lots of wood and must coming out, very farmy and interesting, with somewhat tempered acidity, probably offset by the sweetness of the fruit. this had the potential to be the sweetest of them all, but its fermented back down quite a bit, while retaining the flavor of the currants. deep earthy sweet on the fruit, concentrated and preserved it seems, but authentic for sure. blackberry and blueberry notes as well. the mouthfeel of this one is near the top of the class too. less acidity for sure, but also this real round soft bigness to it, full and flush, great carbonation, but a lingering presence too. seems bigger than the others, but so smooth. a really odd and interesting feel for a lambic. top notch!

A 200ml pour on draft at Mikkeller Bangkok into a mini stemmed wine glass.

Appearance: A deep dark-ish purple colour with a reddish hue and a thin half centimetre purplish pink head with minimal lacing.

Aroma: Light funk with leathery brett. Dark fruit, blackcurrant, sour berry, grape and vinegary tartness.

Taste: Tart, sour berries, blackcurrant and grape with barnyard funk. Hints of oak and sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Dry, light to medium bodied with medium to high carbonation.

Overall: A solid fruit lambic that I would revisit again if I can find a bottle version. Very easy to drink.

Pours a dark purplish color, with purplish pink frothy foam. Sparse spotty lace around the edges, lasting surface skim.

Aroma is mildly funky, acidic fruit, leathery Brett. Taste is a little more one dimensional, sour fruit all the way. Nice drying tannins in the aftertaste. Juice like feel with average carb levels, like sparking grape juice but not as carbed.

Overall it was fun to try, but others in the series are better. The price is rarely justified with these.

On tap. Poured a clear, ruby color with a small, off-white head of foam. It smelled of berries, caramel and tart lemon. Sweet berry taste with a tart bite and smooth finish.

On tap at The Olney Place in Penn Yan, NY.

This one pours a muddy purplish dark color, with a small head, and basically no lacing.

Smells like tart black currants, brine, funk, and a mild amount of lactic tartness.

This isn't super sour, about a 4/10, with a great currant flavor. It tastes a bit wet and slick, if that makes any sesnse. There's some damp funk on the back end, with an olive-like briney character as well. Interesting and unique, for sure.

This is medium bodied, with a slick and slightly juicy mouthfeel, and a lower level of carbonation.

A really interesting beer here, glad I got to try it.

Not sure I could add much to the former reviews, they are pretty spot on. I found this tasted exactly like I hoped it would. Very refreshing! Love what Mikkeller is doing these days.

Notes taken are brief on account of a less than ideal review environment:

Fantastic blackcurrant/berry notes coupled with ~5/10 sourness and mild tartness make this an excellent beer with high drinkability. While sour lovers may crave more tartness and puckering sourness, this will satisfy the discerning drinker and boasts impressive balance, a gestalt flavour profile, and a unifying oak undertone. Acidic, smooth, and wet mouthfeel sets off the sourness nicely.

I look forward to revisiting this in more detail. One of Mikkeller's best sours.

8 oz. on draft at Jester King on 11/23/14. As lambics go, I'm not sure how you can do much better. Light purple, a surprisingly long lived head (for the style), a hint of berries in the aroma. The taste and mouthfeel are what make this, though. Tart with a bit of residual sugar. The fruit is subtle but present. Fine carbonation and light bodied. It finishes with a fair amount of bitterness, making it a nice counterpoint to the start and middle.

Was a bit skeptical on the Mikkeller lambics but I was very surprised to get a very well done beer. Very nice fruity aroma and taste, not overly tart, making it a very drinkable and enjoyable sour beer.

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep red. Small off white head. Medium collar.

Smell - Light currant. Wood. Yogurty.

Taste - Berry fruit that builds into a very distinct black currant flavor. Like a black currant jam without the sweetness. Very woody. Less yogurt than the nose.

Mouthfeel - Dry and woody. Moderate sourness. Well carbonated.

Overall - The woodiness is intense. The currant flavor is pretty nice, but not enough to truly elevate the beer.

Pours a hazy, dark purple color. 1/3 inch head of an off-purple color. Great retention and good lacing. Smells of currant, sweet malt, sugar, hint of sour, and a hint of hop. Fits the style of a Lambic - Fruit. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. There is also a noticeable tartness. Tastes of currant, sweet malt, sugar, sugar, hint of floral, and a hint of alcohol. Overall, good appearance, good body, and good blend. Not too sweet, but also not overly dry or tart. A good lambic - fruit.

Bottle 330 ml split 2 ways. Beautiful purple pour. Very fruity lambic. Nice grape skin, wine and leafy aroma. Taste is definitly tart (citric) with some blueberry jams that adds some depth, light lactic feel also. Another good lambic by Mikkeller. Very close to the top examples.

375ml bottle. The typical label dude carrying some seriously big cassisballs, whilst running through a purple rain, seems to be an apt harbinger of things to come.

This beer pours a rather dark and muddled pinkish purple hue, with two fingers of puffy, and tightly foamy pink cotton candy head, which leaves some awesome honeycombed lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of bittersweet cherries, watered-down Chambord liqueur, sharp earthy, but weirdly attractive dry funk, aged white cheese, a moderate vinegar tartness, a touch of musty leather, and mildly perfumed leafy hops. The taste is still largely on the tart side of all those consistent cherry, black currant, and lemon rind fruit notes, with a steady, but duly unloved bready pale malt flailing away somewhere in there, some evened-off dusty funky essences hanging on, while the alcohol starts to make its move, overtaking the hops that just want to maintain the status quo.

The bubbles are a bit astringently metallic, but soften a bit as we merrily go, the body medium-light in weight, and as smooth as one might expect in the midst of such an acetic acid melee. It finishes off-dry, surprisingly, the malt finally asserting itself, amongst the lingering black fruit, funk, and sidling alcohol.

One of the better iterations of the Spontan(fill in yer fruit here) offerings from Mikkeller - fruity, funky, malty, and boozy, all in measured, yet hefty doses. Maybe it's because I'm a fan of black currants, but this one just works for me, and is highly recommended if you're into the style.

A - Beautiful, rich dark amber color. Small head but lots of lacing.

S - Aromas of cherries and sourness.

T - Dry sherry taste. Plenty of sour flavors and nice, almost spicy aftertaste. Nice change from the big stouts lately.

M - A tad thin and not as carbonated as I'd like.

O - A nice beer. Easy sipper despite the pretty big abv. Definitely would have again.

Almost purple in color with a fair amount of turbidity. Strong cassis and berry aromas. Grass, a touch of oak, and only a mild mustiness. Has a very strong grape juice aroma, too. The flavor is lightly sweet with a fairly restrained tartness. Heavy on the fruit flavors. Lots of cassis, blackberry, and red grapes. Some oak, grass, and must, but they seem to be covered by the fruit.

Bottle shared thanks to Kac.

The beer pours a cloudy reddish purple color with just a bit of head and really no lacing. Really pretty.

The smell is outstanding, it's a lot of fresh berries and a great amount of funk and tartness, the cassis comes through great with flavors like raspeberry tart as well.

The flavor is definitely less than the smell but a solid representation of the style. Fruit and dry semi tartness, not an overwhelming taste at all unfortunately. Still very refreshing and true to style.

The feel is nice and dry, decent carbonation, nice tartness.

Overall a very solid beer, with a great great nose.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. Always happy to try a new beer from Mikkeller.

The beer pours a reddish color with a white head. The aroma is pretty nice, with some cassis and cherry notes, as well as a decent amount of sourness. The flavor is even better than the aroma in my opinion. I get a lot of tart cassis and dark cherry notes, as well as some vinegar and a little bit of caramel malt. Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation. Very nice.

The ale is clouded deep red, has a high firm pink head that settles slowly and leaves loads of lacing and good curtains.

Smelling funky leather, stable, fermented black currants.

No sweetness to talk about, a very invigorating tart sourness, red fruit aroma, crushed cherry seed bitterness.

Medium high carbonation, a dry almost course texture, medium body with lots of freshness. Does not feel like near 8%.

A very nice lambic style beer.

Drank from my Cantillon Geuze glass

A - Pours a deep hazy Ruby colour with a pink head that reduces to a film.

S - Barnyard funk, horse blanket and blackcurrents are nicely pungent.

T - Nice sour tart flavours hit the tongue straight away. the Blackcurrents are very well balanced and maybe could be a little more evident to allow a tiny bit more sweetness.None theless the sour lovers would love this.

M - Light to medium body with plenty of carbonation. Leaves a nice film on your tongue.

O - My first Spontanale and i'm a big fan of this one, as it bears Cantillon like qualities.I will try more in this series.
