Thanks! Snifter.

Appears near black with a dark brown head. The aroma is smoky and earthy with booze stinging my nostrils. There's a strong chocolate presence with plenty of roasted malt. Slightly nutty. Smoky, meaty, nutty. The flavor is softer than the aroma suggested. Dark and milk chocolate blend with firm roasted notes that later turn to char and ash. Dark fruits are restrained. Molasses blends with a brown sugary sweetness. The beer is full in body with medium carbonation. The mouth feel is sticky with plenty of alcohol warming. Overall this is better than I expected from a Mikkeller Imperial Stout, but still a bit too ashy and charred for me.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter glass

Very dark, black in colour, no head at all

Smells molasses, port/wine, chocolate, toffee, biscuit, sweet/sugary smelling

Tasted a little flat, no lacing as such, no head but did portray a wine like character in terms of 'legs' clinging to the glass !

Flavours pretty much matched the smell, quite a sweet beer, a little to so for my liking but that didn't detract from enjoying it as I was eating strong cheeses at the time!

Chocolate, toffee, again a wine or port flavour, slightly spiced, coffee, maybe vanilla in the background

Verdict - would I have it again?

Perhaps, but I wouldn't go actively seeking it and I would drink it with cheese again to take away the overall 'sweet' taste

The first bottle I had of this was totally flat, which was obviously disappointing. I had a second bottle and decided to give it another go, and to my delight, it was carbonated just fine. This is a re-review then.

Got a few bottles of this at Geers in Gent.

From a bottle into a snifter.

APPEARANCE: Black pour yields a one finger, medium looking, mocha colored head with good retention. Slowly fades to a decent wisp. Much better, considering my first bottle was flat. Black body and minimal carbonation evident. A splotchy wisp and good ring remain until the end and leave dots of lacing down the glass. Pitch black beer with a decent head.

SMELL: Pretty big nose. Roasted and burnt malts, licorice, dark chocolate and some big, sweet molasses notes. Some port wine and boozy elements in there as well. This will probably be very demanding, as big Mikkeller stouts can sometimes be.

TASTE: Roasted and burnt malts, salty licorice, sweet molasses and then some port wine at the finish. Lots of flavor and a touch boozy with that classic charred malt signature that makes it so Mikkeller. A big, burnt, bitter chocolate and sweet molasses aftertaste has some port wine and boozy notes and just won’t quit. Bold, persistent and flavorful stuff. A little too boozy perhaps, but lots going on.

PALATE: Body is on the fuller side of medium with higher levels of carbonation. Very creamy and full in the mouth, silky smooth, goes down fine and finishes slightly sticky with no burn. Some heat lingers on the palate. Very, very nice and surprisingly smooth given the boozy flavor profile. Much better than the flat bottle as well.

OVERALL: In my original review I noted that some carbonation would make this one a phenomenal brew, and I was right. Though it’s a little boozy, there is lots of great flavor, a very impressive nose, and some carbonation has made a world of difference. Well worth drinking if you get an easy opportunity, but because there are at least some flat bottles going around, this is probably not one worth tracking down. Very impressed with this one. Mikkeller strikes again!

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nice huge foamy head with good retention and good lacing. Aroma of black chocolate with light lactose notes and some deep roasted malt is quite sublime. Taste is also a great mix between some black chocolate with just enough lactose notes and some roasted malt to make this truly interesting. Body is full with a super nice creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. I wasn’t expecting much but this is truly wonderful. Mikkeller is becoming the go-to brewery for Imperial Stout.
