12oz chalice at the Underground, in advance of their Mikkeller tap takeover later this week.

This beer appears a slightly cloudy, medium golden straw colour, with one finger of bubbly, loosely foamy off-white head, which leaves a decent sinking storm cloud lace around the glass as things duly settle.

It smells of bitter orange and grapefruit citrus, surprisingly (I guess) funky yeast, aged lemon flesh, subdued pale grainy malt, with a touch of wheaty astringency, a hint of black pepper, and further leafy, floral hops. The taste is rather prominently funky yeast, mostly of the barnyard sort, well supported by the grainy, edgy wheat malt, and attending citrus and floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly sedate, though pervasive enough to justify itself, the body an adequate medium weight, and generally smooth, the hops not quite that adventuresome. It finishes well off-dry, the wheat character discovering its spine, while the hops lend some fruitiness to the cause, and their own offset to the lingering, and now thankfully muted funky yeast notes.

Not really all that prominently wheaty, nor hoppy, as the yeast is the star here, rendering this gimmick inert - it appears that yeast is the new hop, instead. A Belgian IPA, at best, and a so-so one at that.

Glass. Little cloudy, golden yellow with medium white head. Medium citrus and straw aroma, also noticable very nice basement accents. Flavour is balanced between dry malt base with some woody accents and nearly medium bitterness. You can also taste some tropical fruits and saison-like accents. Light to medium body, smooth texture, average carbonation, finish is medium and dry, aftertaste is light bitter. Drinkability is high, very refreshing. In general really solid, drinkable and refreshing beer. Very balanced, where none of the element overpower others.

$8.99 for a 4-pack of 500ml cans from Yankee Spirits in Norwood, MA on 1/12/18. Can says 26/08/16. What?! This store just opened a month ago and they have cans from almost a year and a half ago? But...for that price...and with brett...and from Mikkeller and De Proef and Grassroots...what the hell.

Very hazy light gold with small white chunks, good sized head and good lacing. Smells tangy with citrus, brett funk, and a little cardboard. Taste follows suit, juicier than I expected with mangoes and grapefruit, a little sweet at first, but dries out, a pleasant black pepper, and nicely pithy. Feels on the thinner side with a little sizzle, which makes it very drinkable. Overall, this is definitely up my alley. Inspired by the likes of Orval and XX Bitter, but riding more of the modern hop wave and downplaying the yeast a bit, perhaps. I'll grab this one whenever I find it.

Update: Two out of the four cans were good, like described above. The other two were bad-homebrewy messes of yeast, autolysis, and wet cardboard. The inconsistency within the 4--pack is strange, but if I see more of it I'll still take the chance on it because of how much I liked the two that were in good shape.

Bottle purchased from West Lakeview Liquors. Served in a pint glass.

A - Giant creamy white foam settles to a thick cap and splotchy lace. Hazy pale golden body.

S - Tropical brett, citrus hops, unmalted wheat, some light herbal and grassy notes.

T - Taste is similar, with hefty brett funk and tropical flavors, some stone and tropical fruit malt sweetness, and a mildly sour and bitter finish.

M - Lower carbonation, smooth texture, medium body, slightly dry, quite refreshing. No discernible alcohol.

D - Pretty enjoyable stuff that delivers exactly what it promises. Easy to drink and great for a hot summer day. Surprisingly affordable for a Mikkeller offering. I'd drink this one again if it was on-tap somewhere.

Pours a nice light gold with a one-finger head into my glass. Very light. Looks crisp.

Holy Wheat, Batman! And it's complimented by a mix of pungent, fruity brett and hops.

Ditto on the flavor. The Brett and the hops mix well, creating a salty pretzel facade (think the saltiness of a pretzel...the dough that created that pretzel). The hops drown out the Brett more than I'd like.

Lingering "saltiness" from the hops and brett mixing. Lest I forget about the wheat, it is barely here. More of an enhancer at this point.

Excellent collaboration between Mikkeller and Grassroots. Might I add that wheat IPAs/white IPAs seem to be the "style du jour". Better to have the pros do it and do it well!
