Interesting beer. I really like the label, attractive design. It's got a nice deep orange colour, hardly any foam though, some light lacing throughout. Not getting much for smell, honestly not that appealing but alright.

This thing really picks up on the taste though. First thing I notice is the sour qualities, hints of lemon, orange, pine, wheat and vinegar. There are more grainy cereal flavours here as well but they are in the background for sure. The feel is good, nothing too special.

Is wheat really the new hops? Not too sure about that.

I'm sort of in a weird place with this beer.

On the one hand, it's from 8/26/16. Yowza. Why aren't there commissioned IPA hunters out there in the wild who get to take all of the old IPAs out back and put them out of commission? Because this can... well. I hate to acknowledge how old it is, because it reminds me of how old I'm getting. It's old. It's obsolete. It should be terrible, full of floaties and smell like a desert harem.

But the puzzling thing is... it's really not. Perhaps it's the wheat, though more likely that it's the brett... but this beer has somehow held up. It still has a fairly high content of bitter hops, which I hadn't quite expected, but the mouth feel has a pleasant creamy quality as well. The hops are sharp, and the blend of sharpness, bitterness, and creaminess is pretty pleasant, in my opinion. I'm surprised, but find myself liking this beer a lot.

Actually, this is my first Mikkeller IPA that hasn't been miserably bad. I'm assuming that is because all Mikkeller beers sit for too long - yet, this one ages well, so that hasn't been an issue. Surprising. But cool!

$8.99 for a 4-pack of 500ml cans from Yankee Spirits in Norwood, MA on 1/12/18. Can says 26/08/16. What?! This store just opened a month ago and they have cans from almost a year and a half ago? But...for that price...and with brett...and from Mikkeller and De Proef and Grassroots...what the hell.

Very hazy light gold with small white chunks, good sized head and good lacing. Smells tangy with citrus, brett funk, and a little cardboard. Taste follows suit, juicier than I expected with mangoes and grapefruit, a little sweet at first, but dries out, a pleasant black pepper, and nicely pithy. Feels on the thinner side with a little sizzle, which makes it very drinkable. Overall, this is definitely up my alley. Inspired by the likes of Orval and XX Bitter, but riding more of the modern hop wave and downplaying the yeast a bit, perhaps. I'll grab this one whenever I find it.

Update: Two out of the four cans were good, like described above. The other two were bad-homebrewy messes of yeast, autolysis, and wet cardboard. The inconsistency within the 4--pack is strange, but if I see more of it I'll still take the chance on it because of how much I liked the two that were in good shape.

Pours a golden orange, lightly hazed with very light, but thin foamy head. Some noticeable floating sediment. Smells like a saison, with sour earthy notes, faintly floral. Taste is bitter, light, harshly peppery, with some fruit notes, white grape, orange peel. Still, very drinkable and despite all the contrasting flavors, not very challenging.

Poured from the can a hazed lighter golden with a thinner bone white head atop.A big shot of tropical fruit-like hop aromas over top of toasted wheat malt note, nice big fruity aromas.Fresh citric hops with a bit of lactic sour tinge but not offensive, yeasty pepperiness is there as well.Lighter and refreshing with the brett not slapping me in the face, not bad.

Wheat Is the New Hops Mikkeller/Grassroots

A: Honey gold color, great head retention that seems to last forever, two fingers worth of foam
S: Wheat and mosaic hops, smells like a DIPA, piney
T: Citrus, lemon, slight funk undertone that stays on the aftertaste, hoppy, some malt backbone as well
M: Light to medium thickness but goes down smooth, medium carbonation
O: A good refreshing beer all around. Looks good, smells good, tastes good, drinks good. I like it

Look: Pale gold in color and quite hazy.... as expected (wheat beer). 3 finger head after pouring form a 12oz bottle. Mighty active with steady streams of larger bubbles. Frothy lace sticks to the side after the head starts to recede.
Smell: Smells of hops, buscuits, and wheat. Slightly funky and citrusy. Smells like a Belgian IPA / White IPA.
Taste: Not tons of bitterness form the hops, but there's a nice bite to it. It leads right into spices and pine. Bitterness fades out and in comes citrus (orange, lemon, pineapple, mango) and malted sweetness. Dries out and hops seem to come back in with some bitterness and pine (citra perhaps?).
Feel: Feels fuller bodied than I expectted for an IPA. Medium / Full - right on the line.
Overall: Like this one. Reminds me of Belgian IPAs - Hoppy, piney, and citrusy. Brett adds some nice funk and tartness here.
