Reviewed from notes. Poured from 330 mL bottle into a Cigar City goblet.

A: Essentially black, opaque, with a thin brown head and no visible carbonation to speak of. Definitely pours thick and viscous.

S: Roasted malts, cacao, lactose. Bits of drying tobacco and chilis. Not huge overall; this may need to warm up some.

T: Roasted malts, bitter bakers chocolate, and some char. Hints of smoke as well, with tobacco dryness. It may be the power of suggestion (or probably is?), but I would swear you can taste the black beans here too. Light green chili flavor as well, but minimal capsaicin heat. Finishes dry with roast bitterness and some smokiness on the exhale (though not overly “Band-aid”).

M: Full-bodied, though certainly not Hunahpu consistency. Low carbonation sensation, and alcohol seems restrained for what I expected.

O: This wasn’t bad, but I had high hopes that were disappointed. I could have done without the smoke. The chilis didn't pull through. It actually seems one-sided, coming down on the bitter side. I don't remember what I paid for it, but it wasn't worth it. I wouldn't say avoid necessarily, but I don't think I'll be having another.

Gloopy black with a large, dark tan head settling to a mocha film leaving mini spots of lace on the glass.

Smell is, weirdly enough, roasted black bean like malt with a light chili and cumin powder essence that simulates a mix between Nacho Cheese and Guacamole DORITOS. In other words, it smells kind of like Taco Bell had a helicopter-sized load of cocoa powder dropped on it.

Taste is exceedingly smoky and roasty, but not actually smoked, with notes of cocoa and molasses. A tang of chili-like dark berries pops in with a little heat, as well as some green hops, or is that the avocado leaf? There is an ashy aftertaste.

Body is moderately thick, with a substantial yet quickly dissipating fizz and a semi-dry finish.

750 mL bottle. Black body with an enormous mocha head. Smells creamy, roasty, spicy. Nice. Tastes spicy and peppery, sweet chocolate, creamy and roasty in equal portions. Nicely bitter in the back end. Medium body and creamy. Clearly, I do not get the individual ingredients, because what the hell does avocado leaf taste like? But it works.

Mikkeller's Mexas Ranger, ale brewed with spices, almond milk, cocoa, chilli, black beans, and avocado leaves. 6.6% ABV.

A: A bit over a finger of cocoa head; dark cream in the center. Black inside the glass; really dark brown in the dimple. Light sheeting; very little lacing; faint inkiness.

S: Roasty, very dark cocoa. Light coffee. Hint of waxy pepper. Dirt, faint grass/green leaf. Faintest hints of black bean skin and almond skin. Slight chilli powder.

T/MF: Bitter vegetal quality. Black bean, blackened plant matter. Nothing pleasant.

Poured from an 11.2 oz. bottle, into a Belgian tulip glass.

On tap at Skuli Bar in Reykjavik, Iceland. Served in the house teku glass.

Pours a dark cola brown body, one finger offwhite head, fair retention, not muchlacing. Smells of char, smoke, milk chocolate, a bit of espresso. The smoke is pretty hefty in this one, and it kind of wears on you later on, but up front, it is a nice tobacco smoky complexity. Flavour is similar, with a fair bit of tobacco leaf, milk chocolate, a bit of campfire smoke. Its definitely interesting at first, but after a while, it starts to really wear on your palate. I couldn't finish the full pour, although I enjoyed what I drank. Mouthfeel is medium-lighter bodied, lower in carbonation, with a smoky finish. Overall, this is one best shared with a bunch of folks, as I thought the smoke and char got overwhelming after a while, especially as it warmed.

Poured into a snifter it has a 2 and a half inch fluffy big bubbled head of slightly darker beige with a dark brown body (no lacing, just the occasional bubble cluster). Smell of fresh citrus hops, floral, grass, earth, lots of spice, slight chili, gas (probably the epazote), chocolate, and lots of roasted barley. Taste is chocolate, slight coffee, chili, tiny amount of heat, earth, grass, grapefruit, roasted barley, tobacco, licorice, oil, and a bit of nuttiness in the aftertaste. Mouth feel is full as well as body with a moderate to large amount of carbonation. A cool beer, but not for me, just too much going on and too earth-y, probably would go great with tamales.

Probably not. But it sure is fascinating.
So was this beer.
I saved this magnum specifically to have a burrito (with a friend) at my favorite BYOB Guatemalan restaurant.
This beer is reviewed in Roger Protz' "300 More Beers To Try Before You Die" and he cites so many herbs in the beer that it astounds me they can be put in a bottle and be drinkable.
They are.
I did.
And it went great with the spices in the food.
If you find it, buy it.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 10/14/2019. Pours dense pitch black color with a 2 finger dense and rocky dark brown bread with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Incredible appearance. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, molasses, chili pepper, smoke, tobacco, nuttiness, light dark fruit/licorice, pine, light char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa/spice, and earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, molasses, chili pepper, smoke, tobacco, nuttiness, light dark fruit/licorice, pine, light char, and herbal/roasted earthiness. Good amount of roast/char/pine bitterness and pepper spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, molasses, chili pepper, smoke, tobacco, nuttiness, light dark fruit/licorice, herbal, pine, and roast/char earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa/spice, and earthy hop flavors; with a good malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness from bitter/spiciness as well. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/chalky, and sticky/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Very minimal pepper heat as well. Overall this is an outstanding spiced American stout style. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, cocoa/spice, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Pours black w decent head. Smells of an old dirty leather bag. Tastes of a chalky stout with no chili flavor. Mouthfeel is ok. Disappointing for what I thought was.

Dark brew, topped with a huge mocha head. Retention is also fantastic, leaving behind thick clumps of lacing. It almost looks like brown sugar lines the rim of the glass as the head slowly recedes, with a chunk of root-beer-float-ice-cream in the middle.

Smells like a spiced stout, all right. Lost of roasted barley; slightly ashy. Chilies are slightly present, but any other spices meld together into an unidentifiable soup of aromas.

Flavor is similarly muddled. All roasted barley up front, with chilies emerging slightly on the back end, followed by a massively roasty finish: burnt coffee, ash and char, and bitter chocolate. Dry and bitter.

Easy drinking, bitter, dry finish.

Some spiced beers pull things off perfectly: Bomb! and Xocoveza come to mind. This one comes across as a very good stout base - very impressively roasty for the low ABV - with a muddled, gimmicky execution. The list of ingredients is huge, eclectic, and ultimately doesn't come through. I'm not really sure how black beans and avocado leaves are supposed to taste in a beer, anyway.

I don't think I'd purchase this again, and certainly not at typical Mikkeller prices. As the experience continues, in fact, I find that I'm not really enjoying this beer at all.

Dark brown ro almost the point of black. Incredibly thin khaki head.

Dark chocolate and coffee in the nose, but very diluted and bland.

Tons of flavors vying for attention (vanilla, spice, chili, a bit of caramel). Kind of a clusterfuck. The only thing that stands out is an artificial dark chocolate than fades into a roasty coffee/bitter espresso aftertaste. I actually really enjoy the aftertaste, but everything leading up to it is pretty mundane.

Medium bodied. Kind of low carbonation.

Overall, kind of forgettable.

9 ounce pour, is a deep dark murky brown. Lots of chocolate and coffee on the taste, very slight hint of the chili burn with a nice amount of roasted bitterness.

Thick dark brown pour, minimal head. Roasty aroma, raw cacao. There's a lot in this brew, and not much of it really came out in the taste. There was no spice or spiciness, but a lot of roasty malts, cocoa powder, and I guess between that and the beans, it definitely had a gritty texture. Weird, but not bad, just overall didn't deliver anything unique, for all that went into it.

Beautiful dark color. Wheat colored head with exceptional retention which blankets the glass in creamy lace.

Mildly roasted notes of cocoa and espresso in the nose. Hint of chili peppers.

Flavor follows the nose well. Spices, chili peppers and cocoa are subtle. Love the bold roasted character. Balanced with a burnt sugar flavor.

Medium body. Disappointingly, minimal carbonation. Rich, grainy texture allows the flavors to linger.

Overall, a very tasty, fresh and unique offering from Mikkeller.

Was hoping for more from this one. Never saw something with this kinda spice to it. But reallt, to me, it fell flat. Pours a jet black with a small tan head. Smells more roasted than anything. Taste was more stout than anything. Didn't really notice any spice. Little bit of pepper, coffee and some chocolate. I suppose I put my expectations to high. Good beer, solid choice, just not what I actually wanted.

A: Dark brown to black with a reddish tinge on the edge when held to the light. On top, 3 fingers of dark rusty brown foamy head.

S: Tequila, chocolate, cocoa, cereal bran, some strange scents like carob. Soy sauce, licorice.

T: Dark chocolate, carob, light spicy quality, then hit with hard shelled peppermint gum, then some exotic spices like almost sandalwood, herbal qualities like avocado with its peel. Soy sauce, licorice, a floral quality like lilacs, a lightly sour note like cider vinegar. Its got some interesting herbs that I can’t identify as well, almost like Thai spa herbs. At times there’s a smokiness as well.

M: Thick smooth oily body, very little carbonation.

O: Wow. An excellent brew. Really loving this one. Got it at Mikkeller Bar in Bangkok today, March 1st, 2015. One of those rare brews unlike any other that Mikkeller does. Complex and keeps me drinking it.

Draft @ Mikkeller Bar SF on 1/19/20. Pours dark brown in color with slight tan head. Aroma of chills, chocolate, with some sweet almond and smoke. Flavor is chocolate, brown sugar, noticeable but not overbearing chili, and some smoke. Mouthfeel is relatively thin. Very nice flavor profile, although personally I would have enjoyed some more chili pepper heat.

after drinking this again recently, i have drawn several conclusions. 1) this beer does not need a tequila barrel, and while it makes solid thematic sense to put it in one, it can do little to smooth out an already very smooth beer, and i think dominates some of the contributions of these odd ingredients. 2) this beer ages expertly well. the flavors all marry in really well, and the feel just becomes incredible. i had no idea that a beer this low in abv would improve to this degree with a little time. 3) abv does not necessarily have to be directly correlated to how we could describe a beer as big. this is as boldly flavored, viscous, and intense as any barrel aged imperial coming in at 12% abv, it just doesnt need to be there, and i almost prefer its absence in this context. 4) black beans may be a useful and viable (albeit unconventional) ingredient for brewers on a grander scale than a one off. they have unique starches that add a dense earthy body to this beer without much flavor impact. i could see them being possibly desirable in other big dark beers. all of this gleaned from one beer, pretty cool stuff again from mikkeller. its just so big and dynamic for its abv, and it uses all these crazy ingredients as well as they could be used. worth picking up at any price i think just for the experience.

Dark brown colour, nice foamy ochre head, decent lace left behind. Looks nice.

Smells chocolatey, with some slightly menacing spice notes behind. Chipotle with barbecue sauce, touch of capsicum and relishy onion. Pleasant savoury notes with good chocolate malt base.

Taste is quite roasty, but sweet upfront. Big cocoa nibs and touch of espresso. Late-mid spice comes through, bit of chilli heat with some chipotle smoke, more BBQ sauce as well. Finish has that cocoa resurface to give a molé kind of flavour, roasty mostly though with a bit of a deficit of spice. Nice flavours, could just grab me with more heat.

Smooth feel, full at the front and fluid on the back. Goes down a treat.

A bit lacking in the Tex Mex stakes, but a really nice drinking beer nevertheless.

750ml bottle - Mikkeller goes whole-hog on the Mexican immersion here, brewing this with almond milk, cocoa, chili (peppers, I presume), black beans, avocado leaves, and unspecified spices - now why do I suddenly crave a burrito? And Mexas? Why not Texaco? Oh, right.

This beer pours a rather solid light-destroying black, with no highlights, nowhere, no how, and an effusive climbing tower of puffy, frothy, densely foamy, and bubbly chocolate milk head, which leaves some awesome striated lace around the breadth of the glass as it slowly skulks away. I want to have carnal relations with this, I do.

It smells of musty bittersweet chocolate, roasted caramel malt, hard toffee, a nutty sour milkiness, a muddled earthy vegetal character (black beans and avocado work great in Tex-Mex, but not so much in beer), subtly smoky chipotle peppers, a bit of dark coffee, and a slight medicinal astringency. The taste is fairly spicy, again in the smoked chili pepper vector, baker's chocolate, a heady almond milk sweetness, toasted bready caramel malt, zingy and gritty black bean sauce (Oodle Noodle represent!), a reduced green vegetal component, and some soft, almost overlooked leafy, weedy hops.

The carbonation is quite understated, just a plain, unassuming zippiness pervades, the body a so-so medium weight for my assumed base style for this offering, and smooth, even amongst the loitering spice yobbos. It finishes pretty dry, the smoky chili, nuttiness, and lingering fleshy bean essence (not something I ever expected to write here) catching and exploiting their second wind.

Definitely an American Stout, what with all that creative, south of the immediate border adjunct tomfoolery, eh? Nice to see all the guest ingredients having some sort of impact on the flavour profile here, all atop a decent enough 'regular' stout. Maybe not quite worth the sticker price (more than the once), locally or anywhere, but an interesting look at a particular country's culinary take on a beer that might, and does, welcome it - even if the concept is executed from afar.

Celebrating all-thing-Mexican, Mikkeller jam-packs this stout full of every flavor that's even loosely associated with the Central American country. Aside from tomatoes, this ale is meant to be a mole quesadilla in a glass.

Opaque black in the glass, the beer slowly separates its dark and ominous body underneath from its mocha whipped topping to cap. Long in its retention, the ale coats the glass with intricate lacing patterns as the beer fades.

Sweet and sour in its scent, the ale is rounded with a plethora of complexity. Thinly sweet with candy-shop sweet scents, the beer soon releases tart sherry and port notes that are as succulent as it is acidic. Spicy agave with heavy toast and cocoa powder round out its rich but cidery scent.

Deliciously sweet and roasty, the beer starts out with a French-press coffee flavor, equipped with roast, nuttiness and earthen rootiness. Its burnt sweetness invites that taste of dark fruits- grapes, currants, raisin, dates and licorice all playing a role in its complex middle palate. As the smoky sweetness recedes, its tequilla flavor rises with a spicy fruitiness along with some bright vegetative tones.

Full bodied but not shy on balancing agents, its roast provides dryness. Its hop bitterness provides resinous dryness. Both its natural ale and infused booze provide dryness. Its fading sweetness provides dryness... yet, the beer finishes lightly chalky and only malty-dry with vinous tartness to round it out in the end.

Even though the beer's marketing seems to be a mockery of what's Mexican in America, its taste is true to those flavors south of the boarder, even though the avacado, black bean and honey flavors remain largely below flavor threshold.

A: Pours an extremely dark brown with 1/4 inch dark mocha head. Good retention. Decadent in appearance.
S: Cocoa, spice (chili), brown sugar, and an earthy funk.
T: Hot chili, cocoa, and a bunch of other muddled flavors. Way too much going on here.
M: Light body. Hot spice.
D: Not very drinkable beyond more than the first couple sips. An interesting idea, but the result is too muddled and way too spicy.

Huge creamy fluffy dark mocha colored thick rich almost 2 Finger head that partially reverse waterfall, so much soapy lacing that just sticks forever, pitch black beer. Huge legs too. The appearance can't get any better.

Nose brings tons if dark malts, some roast, hint soy, super heavy dark choc and malted milk ball, bitter with hint acrid but barely, hint of coffee and touch of hot pepper, nice nutty aroma with some creamy almond milk, light green plant leaf, big dark brick choc, a deep nosing brings dried black beans like the crusty beans on the sides of black bean dip. Also some earthy spicy chewy hops.

Taste is a bit different, this time tons of hops and bitterness, big earthy spicy hops, chewy hops, light acrid burnt taste, hint char and dark roast, light tin too. Then lots more chocolate, very bitter dark choc, brick of choc, light creamy lactose and a nutty almond milk. Bitter acrid blends with an earthy green leaf flavor and light vegetative. Light chili pepper heat in the back of the throat. Some light creamy black bean dip flavours. Finish is very bitter, semi sticky sweet, lots more dark choc, light pepper heat lingering, plenty of earthy spicy hops, chewy like, light green plant flavor.

Mouth is thick bodied, bit creamy thick, decent small bubble carb.

Overall great to start, bit iffy to finish.
