Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque black in the glass with a half finger dark khaki head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of semi-sweet dark toasted malt, cocoa, a hint of coffee and light lactose. Flavor follows, with mildly sweet dark toasted malt, lactose, cocoa and a slight bitterness that is reminiscent of coffee. Smooth. Medium bodied with light creaminess. One of the problems of having tasted so many big imperial stouts is that regular strength stouts seem lacking on first taste and it takes some perspective to review them for what they are and not compare them to the larger models. So it is a pleasant surprise every time I run into a standard strength stout that is both full of flavor and balanced into the finish and this is one of them. It breaks no ground in milk stouts, and is a pretty classic example of one, but all the flavors are integrated and the finish is full with lingering cocoa and malt. Nicely done from a reliable brewer of stouts.

From miguel. In Teku glass. After dinner. Creamy, reminding coffee with milk. At first it seem pretty tasty, but as it warms up some torrefact notes appear spoiling it a bit

Bottle at home. Dark brown pour with a medium height tan head. Roasted malts, burnt caramel, lactose, light smoke. Medium body and carbonation and a roasty sweet finish.

330ml bottle into a Spiegleau Stout glass. Paid £5.20 for a single.

Pours an opaque, very dark brown, almost black body that when held to the light allows some crimson slivers to be observed near the edges of the glass. A tall, fluffy, three-finger in height, light-tan coloured head with excellent retention reduces slowly to a thick cap, leaving dense rings of sticky lace.

The subtle nose skews slightly closer to sweet rather than bitter, despite primarily consisting of dry, dark roasted malts, dark chocolate and bitter cocoa powder. Suggestions of acidic green coffee bean and espresso are noticeable underneath, while hints of smoke and char become apparent towards the back end. Taste roughly follows suit, leading initially with light toasted grain sweetness. Dry, darker roasted malts and bitter baking chocolate quickly follow, sweetening around the mid palate with traces of stone fruit and hints of vanilla. Towards the latter half, roasted profiles intensify, bringing freshly ground espresso beans, burnt grains, wood-smoke and char, as well as prevalent pine and woody hop profiles not noted in the aroma. In the mouth, a medium body and modest amounts of soft, fine carbonation feel reasonably smooth, despite being a little thin. On the end, robust lingering roast, bittersweet cocoa and resinous pine profiles dry the palate considerably, finishing with a crisp and clean astringency.

Overall this is an excellent beer, and an interesting take on the style. Darker, drier and more intense than traditionally expected, lactose serves solely as a means to soften bitterness, without deviating from the heavily roast-focused structure. Remarkably complex for the relatively low 6% ABV, it is well-balanced, well-crafted and surprisingly quaffable. Recommended.

I am trying new beers today because it is New Beer Sunday (Week 599) and I have some new beers to review. I purchased this one recently at The Friendly Greek Bottle Shop and I am looking forward to seeing what it brings to the day.

Nothing of note on the bottle, so nothing to do but Pop! the cap. Having done so, an aggro pour brought forth two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with great retention. Color was as black as night (SRM = 44), allowing zero light penetration. Nose smelled like liquefied dark chocolate & now my mouth was watering. Mouthfeel was thick, heavy and creamy, like a dollop had been spooned onto my tongue. The taste gave the misnomer to "Sweet" because it may have been brewed with lactose, hence "Milk", but it had a fantastic smoky bitterness that reminded me of my morning coffee. I do not ruin it with milk, cream and/or sugar and this had that same taste, just kind of cold. No wonder that this is getting such great ratings! Finish was dry and smoky, leaving me licking my lips and looking even more closely at the label. I find it hard to believe that this is only 6% ABV. This is quite the beer and worth seeking out!

Pours a two fingers head that fades soon, leaving good ring and lace. Aroma of herbs, pepper, spices, some citrus notes. Medium body, creamy and harsh palate, great carbonation. Taste of spruce, lemon, herbs, candy, spices.
