12 oz bottle. Pours black with thick fluffy tan head, great retention, coating lace. Roasty fruity aroma. Roasty charred taste, a little smoke, back end bitterness. Smoky roasted malt flavor, citrusy fruity hops around the edges. Soft oily mouthfeel. As good as I recall, very good for the style.

Dark brown color with creamy brown head. Aroma is really hoppy with some roasted malts in the background. Taste starts hoppy and balanced, earthy and piney. Finishes hoppy and roasty with moderate bitterness. Smooth, medium body and carbonation. Really nice example of black IPA, balanced and tasty.

Not retired no more, sillies. 330ml with a best by of 10/7/19.

A - Pour to a pint is more of a dark-but-translucent brown with red highlights showing through. A ton of tan head to start, ridiculous half-finger retention and lace-a-plenty.

S - Quite a bit of piny and earthy hop, almost woody. More of a dense dark caramel malt and roast vibe than cocoa, though sure, cocoa too.

T - The 'black'/malts come more into play here, quite nicely at that. A nice dense malt hit of dark chocolate, roast, cookie dough and some dark fruit. Hence the hops being a bit masked here, but enough grapefruit and pine coming through to recognize it as a black IPA undoubtedly.

M - Definitely on the maltier/heftier side for a hop-driven beer, but fitting given the beer at hand. A bit too much carbonation foam, nice bitterness and a dry finish, quite drinkable.

O - A nice black IPA with a big and appreciated malt profile worth paying attention to, decent bitterness from the roast+hop side of things but it would've been nice to see a more expressive hop profile coming through.

Bottle from Brewers Haven. Nice blend of black IPA , Belgian strong and a hint of sour. Not quite a black pour, dark brown with soft beige head. Aroma leans towards the sour, taste follows with more hops kicking in. Pushing boundaries all the way around.

33cl bottle. MHT 28/10/18.

A: Opaque black. Poured 5 fingers high head, the retention was normal.
S: Roasted. Somewhat grassy. Some herbs (of Chinese medicine). Mildly cocoa milk.
T: Roasted coffee. Thyme. Almost dry. Moderate to high bitterness.
M: Full bodied. Creamy.
O: Something like strong stout but more drinkable. It has most stout flavors, but not as think as it.

Dark brown with a small, creamy, but really sticky tan head.
Lots of citrus hop in the smell, some peach, sour bread, caramel, toast, really faint chocolate. Pretty light.
Tons more citrus in the taste than on the nose. Lots of bittersweet grapefruit, sour lemon, pomelo, even hints of tangerine. Lots of pineapple, sweet and kinda syrupy, straight from a can. Hint of mango. Toasted malts, some caramel, a bit of cocoa powder and then some ashy hints towards the end. Works well with the rich piney notes. Really bitter.
Aftertaste has bitter hop, faint citrus peel, some burnt malt. Medium body and carbonation.
A nice American black ale concentrated on fresh citrusy hops, with a nice toasted malt backbone to keep it from being too light. Nice, refreshing, but nothing unique.

Review from 2012.
Strong aroma is smoky and VERY hoppy - like a good stout mixed with a double IPA. Pours an opaque chocolate brown with a very thick tan head that hangs around for a while. Flavor has a core of roast malt with a strong woody malt overtone and hints of licorice, caramel and coffee. Texture has firm body and lots of fizz and sass. If you like dark beers and hoppy beers, this one is a must!

From a bottle, pours jet black with a frothy off white head.

The nose is citrus and herbal, lots of pine and resin. Then comes a nice caramel with roasted malts and bitter dark chocolate. The flavor is cocoa and resin, some cracker and a little oats and roasted malt. It is very dry with a bitter finish. It leaves a very tobacco like aftertaste in your mouth, which I genuinely dislike.

Overall, alot of good characteristics, but this is slightly better than ok as a whole.
