Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a clear brown colored body with a nice white filmy head that died immediately before I even took a sip. No lacing was left and no carbonation was seen rising. The smell had smokey malts up front with some slight hints of coffee and sweet bread in the background. The taste was dry with the nice light smokiness coming back to add a sweet maltiness. The palate was light, slightly creamy with nothing harsh on the tongue, sessionable. Overall, this was pretty good.

A clear, burnt caramel color with a moderate head that dissipated very quickly. The aroma is mild, malty and sweet. The taste of caramel with coffee and malty undertones. A bit sweet. The after feel is somewhat syrupy.

** Rating this 4 days after drinking it at their establishment in Gettysburg, Pa... That goes against my normal rule because memory can certainly fail ya and not be as accurate as "right at the time"... That said, here we go...
Dark cola - maybe more so almost coffee-like color. I honestly don't remember specifics on aroma. It was a fabulous tasting beer. I hate to call a beer "thick" because it doesn't sound appealing, but this had a bit more viscosity than many "off the shelf" beers. It was a complete enjoyment and I will see if I can find it somewhere in my "neck of the woods". Will absolutely purchase it if I do.

Malty sweet, earthy, and herbal, the team at Appalachian Brewing turns to the time honored and easy drinking Scottish ale for as much depth and flavor as it does refreshment an sensible taste.
Jolly Scott pours bronzen brown color with impeccable clarity. As a gentle froth rises, the mellow scent of toffee, caramel, toast, coffee and chocolate swirl about the nose with a brisk cola-like nuttiness. An initial taste of malt sweetness brings an amplified sweetness of caramel and toffee than the nose suggests before rolling into a coffee and nutty character from toasted grain.
And as the middle palate develops, the ale's sweetness is reduced and the toasty remnants of grain carry a bolder coffee and cocoa character. Laced with the slight bogishness of peat, a hint of smoke, peppercorn and anise become gently apparent. Slimly hopped, the beer's broad woodsy bitterness seems an extension of the toast, coffee and cocoa types of bitterness.
Medium bodied but reading more robustly on the palate, its depth of flavor and dark austere is no indication of the beer's weight on the palate. Its a refreshing, malty dry, drinkable dark beer albeit with hints of persistent cola and grain in finish and aftertaste.
