Review from notes. Consumed 3-26-11 during my first epic Philly tasting. Graciously opened by Dan (NittanyBeerFan) - thanks!

L - Deep bronze, olden rimmed with a frothy auburn sand head. Nice!

S - A bit light but very nice. Blond base with an overlay strawberry, strawberry vinegar, gentle funk, touch of sulfury oxidation that doesn't take away at all. Fruit tones down the funk. General tropical fruit (papaya, guava).

T - Much like the nose with gentle acetic and lactic backing up the fruit even more. The lactic presides over the strawberry, smooth strawberry vinegar, blueberry skin tannins. The oak is soft, lending a clean spice in the mid-palate and finish. Faint butter lends a helping hand to smooth the strawberry and tropical fruit over the surface of my mouth as I swallow. Superbly subtle and nuanced, restrained, refined, and gentle. Score goes up because of the restraint and subtlety.

M - Fine, soft carbonation that absolutely impresses. Silk smooth, soft, and just beautiful - as I swallow the liquid simply evaporates off my tongue.

O - Lovely. The mouthfeel and balance of mascerated fruit, soft vinegar, lactic acid, and gently spiced oak made me finish my glass sooner than I wished (glad I've had a chance to enjoy this again since the time of this original notes review).

Big thanks to Mike(grumpyoldtroll) for opening this dinosaur whale. Never thought i would have an opportunity to try this one.

A- dark purple with orange tint, almost copper like. Beige head that dissipated quickly.

N- over ripe sweet cherry, wooden barrel, brett and citrus rhind

T- Cherry and dark fruit. For such an old bottle, the fruitness is certainly not lacking. Citrus tartness on the finish with a slight vinegar note.

M- Nice carbonation with a clean smooth finish

O- Dark sours arent typically my favorite style, but this bottle blew me away. No oxidation, clean smooth and refreshing. Amazing how well it lasted

Appearance: Cloudy cherry red with a tall off white head that retains nicely.

Smell: Awesome tart cherry pie aroma. Lactic sourness, spicy phenols, ripe black cherry. Such a phenomenal cherry aroma after all these years, I'm amazed by how vibrant this is.

Palate: Tastes downright awesome, reminiscent of earlier batches of Red Poppy but clearly better. Bright black cherry goodness, skin and flesh, mildly sweet with a delicious dark malt undercurrent. Medium in body, moderate sourness. Very gentle and easy to drink. Fantastic stuff, hands down one of the best American sours I've tried.

Review from notes. HUGE thanks to Chris Q for sharing.

Le Woody Brune
Murky brown/amber color, hardly any head. Ring of off white head. 4
Cherry, lactic sourness, oak. Pretty basic, but nice. 4
Cherry, intense lactic sourness, earthy funk, fairly intense acidic sourness. Just intense all around, but layered, and complex. Some wine and oak. 4.5
Medium bodied, well carbonated, sour, but not puckering. Stinging acidity, but not too much. 4
Pretty awesome. 4.5

Thanks to Dan (Nittanybeerfan) for graciously bringing this to our last Philly tasting. Had on March 26, 2011. Dan carefully poured this to the tune of Blondie's "Call Me" in the background. He was jamming to the song and simultaneously poured the beer. It was quite a site. Have been wanting to try this for a while now, so I was anxious to try.

A: Bottle pops with a nice hiss and ghostly smoke streams out. Pours a strawberry brune with mahogany hues and a nice, rather spritzy, eggshell white head. Perfect look for a brune, really. Classic red wine vinegar color, with the head receding very quickly.

S: The first thing that hits me is strawberries. Then blueberries. Then raspberries. Really, this is just berry loaded in general. Tart berries, and well blended with a scent of red-wine vinegar, vanilla form the barrel, and some lemon rinds. Vinegar creeps in to complement the cherry character. Very nice.

T: The berry aspects in the nose are not as evident in the smell. However, the cherry and vinegar notes really shine. Moreover, a nice brown sugar and molasses character come into play. Perhaps even some chocolate. The tartness of the cherry, funky of the red wine vinegar, and complexity of the chocolate is very nice.

Overall, this was a damn solid beer. A very nice brune and very complex for the style.

Thanks to moejuck (thebaldwizard on RB) for this. Received in a Christmas-time trade, kept upright and in the cellar until March 26th, 2011 when it was brought out as the 7th beer of the tasting. Split 4 ways with treyrab, dyan, and bucketboy. No gushing, but happy this was allowed to settle, as there was, indeed, a ton of yeast at the bottom of the bottle.

Burgundy in color, there is very ample carbonation. Fizzy and fine, it produces a full one-finger cap of head. There is fair retention, but for the most part, this pretty much dissipates leaving a ring around the glass and no lacing.

There is a light acetic character that greets me in the aroma, surprising, as that will usually take over a beer pretty quickly once it gets going. There are mainly aromas of lactic citrusy sourness and a balanced funk. There are some very strong and compelling berry fruity characteristics - strawberries, raspberries, and others. Also, there is a touch of vanilla. On the palate, the acetic sourness goes to the back, as the lactic and funky components shine and balance each other out. The fruity flavors come through with some fruit skin tannins that complement the berry flavors beautifully. There is a spicy oakiness in the middle, again complementing the fruit well.

Silky and light on the palate, the carbonation is so light that it makes the beer almost evaporate off my tongue. Very good overall, this is a great American sour if you can track it down.

Appearance: Ruby-brown pour with spritzy carbonation. These have aged very well but should be stood upright for a few weeks before opening; there will be about an inch of sediment in the bottom. We did a continuous pour using a lambic basket into four glasses and dumped the dregs in a fifth glass; that last glass was quite nasty. Many thanks to hophead84 for that advice and for helping identify the bottle.

Smell: Oak, sour cherries, balsamic vinegar; faint brown sugar

Taste: This reminded me of la folie on steroids; it is very much a flanders red/Oud Bruin (though better than any from Europe). It is very intense, sour cherries and oak followed by balsamic vinegar, apple cider vinegar and perhaps brown sugar and honey. There are some wine notes to it as well. Stellar example of the style, not to be missed. Nice light funk, nothing painful.
