Pizza Port
Carlsbad, CA

A cloudy burnt orange and amber with a medium sized head. This beer leaves the glass almost clean with no visible lacing whatsoever. A touch disappointing but it's a good thing I don't drink with my eyes!

I didn't realize or notice it at first but this really does smell like bubblegum: the pink stick bubblegum often found in packs of baseball cards (at least back when I was a baseball-card-collecting-ankle-biter). There's a touch of Belgian yeast but it's quite faint. There's a bit of dark fruit aroma but nothing overpowering. While certainly nice, a touch underwhelming.

The taste is pleasant, unassuming, and accessible. It's mainly sweet caramel malts, a touch of dark fruit sweetness, a faint dash of Belgian yeast, and the bubblegum found predominantly in the nose. It's proper and balanced which is all well and good, I just wish every facet of it was more boldly applied.

The mouthfeel is appropriately medium bodied and richly carbonated. No complaints here.

This is a simple, accessible, and easy to drink dubbel. It's not quite complex enough to enter the upper echelon, but I think it's a wonderful representation of the style. I would use this to introduce the style to someone unfamiliar and I am more than happy to sit back and work on my growler.

I think the whole is greater than the sum of its parts with this beer. While no individual facet of this beer stands out as other-worldly, the beer as a whole comes together flawlessly. It's incredibly enjoyable; I'll drink this any day!

On cask at Pizza Port Carlsbad. This was a version with sour cherries added to the cask Malty aroma,Cherry as it warms. Some toastiness . One quarter inch of creamy head on a dark reddish body. Lacy.Average mouthfeel. More sweet than tart, would like more tuning up, significant tartness.

Originally reviewed on June 9, 2006. Handbottle. Aroma is a strong glow of fruity poundcake, bourbon soaked apricots, rich estery lemons and light cloves. Nicely heavy on the phenols and seductive fruits. Pours beautifully a rich clear ruddied mahogany with orange fringes and a creamy foam head of aged ivory. Flavor carries a sweet bready yeast, again dripping with alcohol drenched fruits in dried and cake form. Abbey yeast character shines! Body is a touch thin and stays generally neutral, with touches of heavy pound cake and lightly drying Styrian. Nice drinkability it a dubble. Holding carbonation and nice head formation and retention. Has a nice twist of lemon peel in the backend, along with copious candied sugars. An expertly packaged handbottle.

A - Brown beer that turns yellow and red on the edges. Small white head that faded to a tight ring and left some spots on the sides.

S - Lots of dark fruit and candy sugars. The raisins are very evident but its not overpowering.

T - Caramel, brown and candy sugar, and a nice bit of raisins. The raisins are pretty complementary, and give it a fuller taste than a lot of dubbels. Rich tasting, with some banana and clove. Pretty good.

M - Syrupy, full bodied for a dubbel, moderate carbonation.

O - Really nice dubbel that packs a lot of flavor, I enjoyed this quite a bit and would have more.

On draft at Pizza Port San Clemente, 02/25/08.

Clear brown pour with modest carbonation.

Bubble gum aroma is all I get in the nose.

Not surprisingly, tastes like bubble gum (perhaps Bubblicious?) with a hint of molasses. Sweet and simple and not especially yummy.

What were they trying for with this one? A gateway beer for 8 year olds?

On-tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad

A: The pour is dark amber in color with a finger of off-white head.

S: Sweet malts and dark fruits fill the nose. Lots of raisins (not surprising considering the massive addition of raisins to the beer) and a bit of plum. Some dark sugars and toasted bread are also on display.

T: Sweet raisins, bananas, and bubblegum provide a really nice flavor, though perhaps a bit sweet. Bready malt, toffee, and dark sugar are also there. A touch of spice (clove) and yeast are also present.

M: Medium to full in body with a medium level of carbonation.

O: While quite sweet, the flavor was really enjoyable.

On tap at PP OB. Snifter. Brewed at Pizza Port Carlsbad.

A: Dark reddish brown with an inch of beige foam. Scattered lacing.

S: Big dark fruit ester profile with plum, prune, and dark cherry. There's a little gum. Malt is bready and rich with a little caramel and rose-like floral notes. There's a peppery character as well. Rich and complex.

T: Strong bready notes blend with a little caramel and toasted character. Plum accompanies raisin, grape, and dark cherry. The dark fruit profile is dried with perfumy floral character. Rich malty finish and quite estery with a little warming.

M: Medium body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: Rich malt and a complex dark fruit presence create a nice combination. Really nice aroma.

On tap at Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA.

Pours a clear orange-brown with a foamy beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, dark fruit, spices, and yeast. Taste is much the same with a mild spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and a good American take on the style.

Pours a clear auburn brownish color. A nice head leaves some great lacing.
Smells of bubble gum as the name implies.
The taste pretty much mirrors the aroma. A little bit of spice behind it. Great flavor. Never had anything quite like it.
Medium bodied. The flavor grabs the whole palate. Good spicy carbonation dances on the tounge.
Good drinkability. I hope I can get down here more often.

Pint at Pizza Port in Carlsbad for around five dollars if I remember right, shared with a friend a few days ago

A-Reddish brown color more on the darker side, 1/3 inch off white head, some retention, minimal lacing

S-Brown sugar, Belgian yeast, candy-like aromas, apples, lots of bubble gum, strawberries, sweet malt, and faint spices

T-Sweet with lots of candy, cane sugar, caramel apple, subtle gum, sweet toffee, faint amount of coriander, oranges when it warmed, biscuit malt, could have used some more hoppiness, too light in my opinion, vanilla frosting, got sweeter and sweeter as time went on

M-Body was too thin, too much carbonation, taste did not last long, sweet and fairly chewy mouthfeel

D-Light for a dubbel, not too heavy on the stomach, alcohol percentage is pretty low, alcohol is hidden well, could have drank a few pints easy

Had never even heard of this brew before ordering it, cool name, pretty good being that I am not a huge fan of dubbels, this PP seems to outdo the others on their brewing in my opinion, worth checking out if you can get down there

Dubba, dubba, dubba you bee. Poured an amber color with a porous head. Lots of larger bubbles that would indicate under carbonated. Although there was nice lacing and a rim around the glass through the whole tasting.

The nose was sweet with notable abbey aromas. Some light sweet caramel malts with a bigger than usual bananas and bubble gum aromas. Some spicey notes as well. Light aromas of cherries and raisins.

The taste is very sweet even for a Belgian dubble. Almost a candy sweetness that over shadows some of the caramel and malty flavors. The fruity flavors come out very nicely with bananas, plums and cherries mostly. Some yeast undertones as well, mostly bubblegum and a bite of white pepper. There is a bit a heat coming from the noticeable alcohol flavor as well.

The body is a little off because of the sweetness. Really feels unattenuated to me. Overall I enjoyed the big fruitiness of the beer but also with the alcohol kick and residual sweetness, it really limits its drinkability.

On tap at Carlsbad Pizza Port.

A: Looks like a brown sugar simple syrup. Very clean, refined. Nice off white head which fell to a wisp.

S: Yes, definately bubble gum. Lots of sweetmalts and candy sugars.

T: Very nice. Sweet but not cloying. Obvious dark candy sugar flavors but notes of candy corn and rootbeer. Subtle dark fruits and yeast. More bubblegum thoughts in the aftertaste.

M: Actually a bit thin and fizzy. Although chewier could make it more syrupy...something to ponder.

D: It is on the sweet side so drinking a lot of it is very difficult. But a pint is very easy! I liked it.
