Pizza Port
Carlsbad, CA

An exceptionally beautiful brown ale. Pours an extremely dark brown with burnt cherry edges and oh my what a head! The pillowy, milky brown head rushes upward and stays there for long while, the top forming both small and large craters as I wait for it to subside so I can smell this beer. A disappointingly small amount of lacing is the only thing keeping this beer from a perfect appearance.

A welcoming toasty and nutty aroma with perhaps a hint of sweet fruit and milk chocolate, though the nose is dominated by the nuts and the smell of baking bread.

A sweet brown ale with hints of cashews and chocolate. Roasted malt presence, and a bit of sugary chocolate sweetness.

A initially disappointing mouthfeel, my first impression was "water-thin," but it seems to improve as the beer warms.

A very good beer that will please a lot of differing palettes: would be a great pick for a large and unadventurous crowd. I would consider this a terrific "gateway" beer when introducing craft beer and brown ales to someone; not to mention it goes perfectly with pizza!

On-tap at Papago bar. Very dark brown and lacey, though was only a whisp of a head. A bit watered down. Some licorice taste. Sweet and essentially uninteresting, did not pick up the unique use of hops.Average mouthfeel.Drying finish. Carbonation appropriate.

Brown ales. I don't love them, but occasionally one surprises.

A - Brown colored beer with some red on the edges and an off-white head. No real lace left on the sides.

S - Smell is appropriately of caramel, toffee, nuts, roasted malt, and some dark chocolate.

T - Can't complain about this. Tastes like it smells, with nice roast, nuts, bitter chocolate, toffee and caramel. Fairly smooth with an appropriate level of sweetness.

M - Medium bodied with a medium level of carbonation.

O - Solid brown ale that doesn't blow me away, but something I can drink and enjoy. Good take on the style.

On-tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad

A: The pour is a dark brown color with a touch of red highlights to it as well. A finger of tan head caps it off.

S: Lots of nutty aromas along with plenty of cocoa, roasted malt, and dark chocolate. Toffee and caramel provide the bulk of the sweetness and there is a nice toasted malt character as well.

T: The flavor profile is pretty much the same as the smell. A nice sweetness of toffee and caramel, as well as milk chocolate. A touch of bitter dark chocolate, roasted malt, and the usual nuttiness.

M: Medium in body with a moderate carbonation to it.

D: A really solid brown ale. A nice, but not overwhelming, sweetness to it.

Poured on tap into a pint glass pizza port carlsbad 9-30-07.
Poured a cold coffee color with no light getting through the pint( only light brown color toward the base of the pint). Smell of toasty malt nuttyness with a litle hot toffee aroma. Taste roasted malt flavors played with coffee bitterness. A mouth feel almost like a dry stout medium to light even with a dark beer. Could throw back a few of these pints while watching the Chargers.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad in Carlsbad, CA.

Pours a clear dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, and some nutty aromas along with a mild amount of funk. Taste is much the same and also has a slight funk flavor to it. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is drinkable but I think there may be a slight infection issue going on here.

This review is for the growler I took home. I also started my night at Pizza Port with a pint of this and it remained my favorite throughout the evening.

Pours a clear medium brown with garnet highlights. Frothy tan head. No lace. Aroma is sweet, toasted and chocolate. Taste brings out the chocolate again. Moderate/light bitterness in the finish, surprisingly clean. Medium feel and smooth.

It's listed as an American Brown here. It won the San Diego Beer Comp as an English Brown and is billed as English by PP Carlsbad. As such is it an excellent beer.

went to the port to meet some friends and they were drinking a nice dark pitcher of beer. thought i would give it a taste since i am in to dark beers and was shocked to realize that this beer wasnt so dark in flavor. it had a really nutty flavor to it but it went down very smooth. poured nice and didnt leave much lacing and we ended up having 3 pitchers.

good stuff...

Interesting brown ale. Poured a dark brown color that shone a deep red when I put it up to the light. The smell was almost non-existent, but this may have been the bartender's fault. The bartender was talking to another employee while he poured my beer and allowed the tap to enter the glass while the beer overflowed from the cup. The taste had an interesting berry flavor, like jam or jelly. There was also a slight sourness like sourdough bread, but it was very mild. There was little carbonation and no head (but again that may have been partially the bartender's fault).

On tap at Stone World Bistro

A: Looks a lot like brown sugar simple syrup. Very clean with amber streaks through it. Head is tan, made up of medium sized bubbles and falling fast.

S: Toast, almonds, marionberry and apple sauce.

T: Cashew butter upfront with an interesting berry sweetness. The sweet malty backbone bodes well with the other flavors. To me, this is take on PB&J. I get some poached apple as well. Finishes with hints of peanut butter and lingering cardomon.

M: Medium body and a bit fluffy for my tastes.

D: This is a well played brown ale. This one seperates itself from some of the more run of the mill browns that can be found out there.
