Collaboration with Stone Brewing

Back in the summer of 1996, Vince and Gina were so excited to serve beer from their friends Greg & Steve that Vince drove his truck to Stone Brewing to pick up their very first keg and tapped it at Pizza Port that same night. To celebrate our 20+ years of beer friendship, we got together with Stone Brewing to create BFF (Beer Friends Forever)!

BFF has a tropical hop flavor profile of passion fruit, grapefruit, and earthy tangerine peel, and finishes with a rich and clean bready malt background.

Hops: Citra, Rakau, UK Target, Southern Cross, Mosaic
Malts: Maris Otter, Flaked Oats, Flaked Barley
Yeast: London III

Thanks to bonerhog for bringing this beer over last month. Hadn't seen it yet. Two powerhouses together at last. Pours a typical yellowish golden color, good clarity, 1/3" white head. The aroma wasn't popping off dry hop wise. Slight disappoint son. There was just a mild grain and green hop note. Was more akin to a dry hopping effort before certain proprietary hops showed up on the scene. Also started wondering about the beer, buddy said he got it from Total Wine, which rarely s the beer refrigerated/not old AF. Its a new beer, so I knew it couldn't be that old. '

Taste was also a pretty mild affair all things considered from these two heavyweight breweries. There were no off flavors, just what was there was mild and seemingly from another era. Mild biscuit grain note along the hop tree note. Carbonation was fine. Dry finish. Weird thing was how balanced this was, went into it expecting a massive hop creation of proprietary dank variety, got something that could have been from Sam Adams ten years ago.

Can poured into a Stone Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours slightly hazy golden amber with a frothy off white head that settles to a firm layer and laces quite nicely.

S: Pretty much the whole fruit stand, tropical and orchard fruit, plus some citrus, countered with resinous pine, grassy and herbal notes, biscuity malt, and a touch of sweetness.

T: Big fruity side, apricot, peach, plum, pear, passion fruit, and mango, herbal, resinous pine, some citrus, lemon, lime, and tangerine, a little grassy and floral, biscuity malt, and a touch of caramel sweetness. Fruity, but with a west coast bitterness, not juiciness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation

O: Awesome to taste the friendship between these two OG SoCal breweries in liquid form.

BFF pours a slightly cloudy golden orange color with a 1-finger head that dissipates to a thin white veil than covers the to of the glass. The smell is dominated by caramel malt sweetness with lemon and a candied orange with a hint of earthy pine dankness. The taste, is full bodied with orange, mango and passion fruit, which leads to a malt bill that's biscuity and scone like with a hint of peach and floral notes. For a pale ale, this collaboration is sweeter than expected, but very drinkable. Two old school San Diego originals.

This beer tastes like a Southern California summer. It has aromas lemon and tangerine, with more of a light tangerine smell than anything else. It actually tastes more like an IPA than a pale ale, although this one is not too hoppy, which is a surprise. Pours a golden orange with not too much head. Unfortunately for me, its run was short lived, as it was a one time release. I used to find it very easily at Ramirez Brothers (small chain in Los Angeles) but after about 3 weeks, no mas.

The beer pours out a slightly hazy dark golden color, with a thin white head-------------- the aromas are of floral notes, pungent fruit(tropical and citrus) and carmel malts--------------- the flavors follow the nose with that Carmel malt up front leading in to some citrus and tropical flavors followed with a splash of pine and floral notes, the beer has a thin mouthfeel with a medium bitterness on the finish-------------- overall this beer was good - this was a lot different than I expected, when you put together 2 of the bigest west coast ipa innovators you expect a huge hop bomb, but this was a nice extremely balanced pale ale

L: Pours a classic WIPA body with 2 finger width of head.

S: Grapefruit, tangerine, melon, citrus

T: Nothing like the nose, very pale ale, malty, yeast characteristics reminds me of Swami's IPA and Stone IPA 1.0

F: Thin, dry, burning, a piff of citrus on the backend

O: Aside from finding some ants in my can after opening.. this is a meh beer. Maybe it's just my brain not knowing what to do? It's Pizza Port and it's Stone. The two together making an IPA? It's just meh. I just wish it had more of the nose in the taste, something a bit more modern while still staying keeping the base of WIPA. I feel like this was a missed opportunity. Won't be having this again.

Slightly hazy orange gold with two big fingers of head. Looks unfiltered.

Sweet tropic fruit....papaya and guava, some pineapple. A little earthy or dank.

Taste is apricot, full bodied....like taking a bite.

Big, smooth, satisfying.

Really a great collab.

16oz can, Duvel tulip, canned 6/26/18.

Semi-hazy apricot with a tower of off white head. It goes a step above, leaving chunks of foam on the glass.

Pineapple and apricot. There’s some clean ale yeast and an herbal note.

Herbal blends with pineapple, in a kind of drunk pineapple chunk way. The bitterness is rather blunt, lingering, and kind of dampens the flavor rather than enhancing or lending a quenching quality.

Absolutely medium bodied with medium carbonation. The finish is soapy bitter.

This one is a bit of a disappointment from two legendary pale ale/IPA breweries. It’s fresh, yet the hop aroma and flavor don't measure up.
