On draft at brewery, 02/25/08.

Crystal clear dark honey color. Nice head retention.

No aroma from taster glass.

Malty - slight caramel character. No bitterness I could find. Slightly spicy European style hop character: reminded me a bit of ginger.

Interesting alternative to west coast hop bombs.

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Clear and dark orange and amber with a thin white head. Leaves small spots of lace down the glass.

Bready, simple aroma with a bit of sweet caramel. There's a mild, grassy hop presence but it's quite faraway.

Flavor follows the aroma. This is a simple, earthy, somewhat grassy IPA. The bready and slightly sweet malts are the highlight.

Medium bodied with ample carbonation.

Not at all a bad beer, and while very drinkable, it's remarkably simple and even somewhat plain.

A- a deep golden, slight orange, hazy, really nice creamy head. Just the way you would expect a pale ale to look from cask.

S- Mostly sweet, slight earthy hops, nothing stood out here too much, but I don't think it was too out of whack for an English style Pale Ale.

T- Sweet caramel type malt flavors dominate here... some earthy hops go along with it but mostly it's a watery type malt flavor. Sweetness is not cloying or anything though.

M- For a cask english pale it I didn't think it felt too bad. I thought the temperature was really good, not too warm, not too cold, and the carbonation was fine.

D- Sadly, I wouldn't have another. I can only take so much cask beer. I really do like my beer cold, regardless of what beer it is, and cask rarely satisfies me here. It was ok while it lasted though.

A: red caramel in color, quickly dissolving head with decent lacing

S: nice malt character with soft herbal hop notes in the background

T: great spice quality from the hops with bready malt backbone, faint lemon notes

M: little thin on the front but builds with a denser smooth finish

D: solid EPA, sessionable, really appreciate the understated hop notes and hearty malt character

On-tap at Pizza Port San Clemente

A: The beer pours amber in color with a finger of off-white head.

S: Sort of a sweet aroma to it with a fair amount of toasted malt. A bit bland on the nose, though, not much in the way of hops, even the more subtle "English" hops that you might expect. Just a faint floral note on the back end.

T: The flavor is fairly sweet as well with toffee, toasted bread, and a touch of caramel. Like the aroma, subtle hop flavors are present, mostly floral in nature with just a bit of citrus peel bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O: While not my favorite, English pales can be good, but this one was just too bland.

On tap at Churchill's.

A: Dark orange with a small beige head.

S: Bread, biscuit, and earth. Decidedly English, but pretty boring.

T: Lots of biscuit with light earthy hop notes and a low bitterness. This is pretty bland, mostly malt drive and the malt isn't interesting.

M: Medium body with matching carbonation.

Overall: Pass on this.

Orange color with a good dash of brown. Head is white, served with a finger-tall head that doesn't last nor leave much lace. Nose is lightly floral and earthy with hops; in EPA style it's rather understated.

The flavor is mild and pleasant overall. Caramel and pale malts form the bulk of the taste, with only a mild hop presence. Spicy, gingery aftertaste. A little watery.

Probably a good call on cask, but on the taps nothing to write home about.

On tap at The Tap Room, San Diego

Pours a clear, deep amber color with a white dense head that leaves a nice lace. Pleasant aroma of toasted malts and hops; similar taste with a refreshing mild bitter aftertaste. Solid medium bodied with light carbonation. A tasty session beer.

On tap at Papago's
Poured a nice deep orangish color with a small white head. Nose is English malts, nice hops slightly sugary and a tad biiter. Some floral notes. Caramel is a dominating flavor. Mouthfeel is rather creamy and slight spice, malts. Not one of my favorite Port beers but ok.

Draught at PP San Clemente on July 2, 2009. Copper with a white head. Lots of herbal spicy and woody hops in the aroma, along with some darker bread crust. Toasty and light caramel malt flavor with some almost bunt bread crust and a resinous bitter finish. Pretty well balanced, but the finish is definitely on the dry and bitter side, with a pretty complex malt flavor pretty much giving way to the hops. Medium-light in body with medium bobbles helping the hops out. There are English hops all over the aroma and finish of this guy. Tasty, and surprisingly not seemingly enjoyed as much by most other people. I think they are dialing this in with the new batch.
