750ml corked and caged offering poured into a Lost Abbey teku. Big thanks go to Kegatron for sharing this one with me at our last gathering. The brew appears a hazed golden color with a persistent white cap that holds with solid retaining power. As the cap fades, it leaves patchy strings of lace on the glass.

The aroma is at first seemingly dominated by fruity character akin to peach and/or nectarines. Some yeasty spice like clove and a residual grain quality that smells like straw. As I focus more on the fruity appeal, a touch of alcohol emerges coupled with pear and apple skins.

The taste includes the typical saison yeast character imparting a flavor of clove and a hint of peppery appeal. Just like the nose, a hint of straw-like grain and a bit of herbal to fruity alcohol aspects. The aftertaste has pear and apple skins that linger. Unfortunately, that tropical peach character found in the nose does not transcribe into the flavor profile at all.

This is a light bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. Very easy drinking and includes plenty of enjoyable complexity. As far as saisons go, this one has shocked me. Seemingly noone is talking about this brew and it is fantastic. I remember seeing this on the shelf a couple years ago and the price tag kept me from snagging it. Now, I regret not only buying one, but not getting multiples considering how good this is some 5 years after it's release. Many thanks again Heath for sharing.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Ugly label.

Appearance - Hazy orange body. Small white head. Thin collar.

Smell - Citrusy. Tart orange aroma. Yeasty with some pale malt.

Taste - Way more oxidized. Cardboard. Pale malt. Still has the citrus to the flavor, but less intense.

Mouthfeel - Way oxidized. Medium body.

Overall - Just too old. I'm amazed by the citrus, though.

Ne Goeien Saison pours a yellow, straw-like color. Looks clear so far. We’ll see if that holds for the second half of the bottle. Backlighting gives it a bit more of a gold look. Carbonation looks rather active, yielding a white head that stands about a finger or so tall. It recedes rather quickly. Lacing was spotty and light overall.

The nose is good. It’s very earthy and herbal up front. Grassy notes are abundant. Belgian yeast emerges early on and smells delicious. It adds a touch of spiciness. I’m getting a little pepper and clove. Not a great deal though. Just enough to keep things interesting. Secondary scents include lemon and grassy hops. Definitely smells like a noble variety to me. Alcohol is buried. I’m not picking up any. Smells good overall.

The flavor is likewise pretty impressive. It is indeed very earthy, spicy, and herbal. Grass, pepper, and clove are very flavorful. A touch of lemon and light orange flavors work nicely into the mix. Belgian yeast is noted, but isn’t quite as strong as I’d like. It’s flavorful nonetheless. It’s a bit hoppier than the nose suggested. Definitely tastes like noble hops. They’re grassy and have a very slight bitter edge to them. I’m shocked. I wasn’t expecting any hop presence after 4 years. Alcohol isn’t noticeable at all. Finishes grassy and herbal.

Ne Goeien Saison has a lighter body. Carbonation is active, but the bubbles feel soft. It goes down very easy. It’s somewhat difficult not to chug it. This 750 is disappearing quickly.

This collaboration between Port Brewing and one of the brewers from Urthel is an overall success. It’s not among the world’s greatest Saisons, but it is a tasty one. It’s held up quite well after four years. Not sure it will improve from here on it. If you have one, I’d suggest cracking it open.

I popped this Lost Abbey and Urthel collaboration saison with my roommate while we talked about his career. Thanks to Brian out west for the bottle so we could do it!

Goeien Saison 2008 pours a yellow hazy golden straw hue with tons of fluffy head that leaves lace all over my snifter. It looks like a beautiful saison. But it smells off for a saison. There's no funk, grass, or heavy yeasty aromas. The smell is just mellow and sweet - pale malt, light citrusy sugar, and water. It appears the age on the bottle has mellowed whatever was there before.

The taste follows suit. My roommate guessed it was a pale ale. I corrected him, but honestly he wasn't far off. There's a light zesty bitterness followed by cereal and a clean finish. Orange, some buttery oil, and not much else.

For as off-style as it is, it's crazily drinkable. Creamy in the mouth and light on the palate, it goes down smoother than most beers, and the 5.5 abv beer did not last long. What an enjoyable drink. And if it were a Belgian Pale Ale, I'd score it a lot higher.

Thanks, Brian. Good luck, roomy.

C+C 750 mL bottle sent by Andrew far too long ago.

After reading previous reviews dinging this for too much sweetness, I initially poured this as slowly and carefully as possible. Result is a clear, bubbly light gold with a massive creamy head, retentive cap throughout and some thin streaks of lacing. This wasn't a good idea, flavor is earthy and musty, wet cardboard dominating. Um, let's get some more yeast in here; repouring.

New pour is a cloudy, deep golden orange. Aroma is mildly sweet, banana and orange, with some light citrus and grass. Flavor is definitely sweet now, strong bread malt presence and honey citrus but the cardboard dryness still lingers, walking the line between spicy bread and just plain off must. Medium thick with light carbonation. I probably would have really liked this a year ago when I should have drank it.

A - Pale, golden colored beer with a bit of a white head that left some decent lace behind.

S - Some sour citrus and lemon which smells slightly off. Has some grass and some pale malt/honey sweetness.

T - A bit too sweet for my liking, with some earth tones, grass, and slight hops on the finish. Just slightly too sweet for a saison, but it's okay.

M - Dry finish, lighter side of medium bodied, active carbonation.

O - Not a bad beer, glad to have tried it, but I actually wanted something less sweet. Wouldn't seek it out, but wouldn't have a problem drinking it again.

665th Review on BA
Bottle to Flute
750ML

2008 Vintage

Thanks to Brewzer1010 @ Clusterfork #6

App- A nice sunburst orange with a lot of outlying color. A nice one finger head with a decent amount of cling to this one.

Smell- Even for an older bottle its very aromatic. A little citrus, a little yeasty/ A nice small saison.

Taste- This was quite good. A well done and balanced saison with the right amount of yeast and citrus behind it.

Mouth- Light bodied and high carbed. Left a nice soft feeling behind.

Drink- I doubt I will see this again and I was very thankful to try it. Bottle held up really well and was a tasty suprise.

Received this bottle from mikesgroove in my Birthday BIF box. Thanks, Mike!

Poured into a New Belgium globe. Pours a slightly hazy gold, with an offwhite head made up of fine bubbles. Head started out about three fingers, and slowly drops to about half a finger, leaving some lacing behind.

Aromas of lemons, lemon zest, peppery yeast. Straightforward saison aromas.

Flavors of honey and lemon, pepper spice from the yeast, nice bite, some pear, sorrel, good firm balancing bitterness. Finish is medium, with bitter lemon sorrel lingering.

Mouthfeel is medium, more body than I expected, mouthcoating bitterness, that, if faded over the last three, must have been a little bracing when fresh.

Overall, for such a low alcohol beer, it has been kept well over the years. Very good example of a cellared saison. Wish they'd make it again. This was a nice surprise for my non-birthday.

Thanks again, Mike!

'08 Ne Goeien Saison received as a righteous extra from deadeye in an already awesome trade... Thanks Charles!! Shared this one with the brother on Friday.

Poured into my Old Guardian goblet... Very nice clinging everlasting eggshell head.. the brew is lite hazed golden orange.. great lacing.

Nose shows some minor spice and pale malts.. a little lemon zest and grassy hoppiness....

Flavor is nice.. pretty much the same as the nose but with a little honey malt component... lite spice and the hops seem very grassy/herbal but a descent hop bitter bite up front.. lemony.. there is a yeasty element that is hard to describe.... a bit of pear and green apple.. crisp with warmth.. very good. Smooth and lite with a good carbonation.. I would love a case of these to sample and share over the coming years.

Deadeye is a traders' trader. Thanks buddy. I appreciate it.
