On-tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach

A: The pour is amber in color, but it leans a bit more toward the orange side of things. The head is off-white in color.

S: There is a really different nose to this. I get a lot of fruity notes along with some yeast. Toast and bread with just a bit of caramel sweetness. The hops are mostly piney with a little bit of floral aroma.

T: Like the nose, the flavor is very fruity (seems to be oranges). There's a decent bitterness from the piney hops, but the flavor is most reliant on the toast, bread, and caramel, especially as it warms up.

M: The body is medium and so is the level of carbonation.

D: A good but fairly unspectacular amber ale. A better choice than the blonde/cream ales, though.

Pours a red orange amber into a rocks glass and leaves a fleeting head with nice lacing. (in our hotel room without proper glassware). Nose is sweet roasty malts, a little nut wood smoke and faint hints of burnt sugar. It reminds me a bit of a smoky roasted newcastle. Very easy to drink and refreshing if not simplistic. The roasted malt notes do give it a touch of complexity. Stoked to get to SD on a beer shopping spree and pizza port was a nice stop. Pizza was also good in a high end mr pizzaman kind of way (inside for our BA BAers).

On tap at PP OB. Snifter.

A: Amber with good clarity and a fleeting white head.

S: Bready with biscuit and grain. Light earthy notes and a dash of citrus, mainly orange and tangerine. Nicely balanced.

T: Sweet bread with a touch of caramel and evident biscuit. Low bitterness with orange and grapefruit flesh. Balanced smooth finish.

M: Lower medium body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: A solid Amber Ale. Balanced and drinkable.

On tap for the 4th Anniversary event at Blue Palms Brewhouse in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear dark orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and some slightly fruity aromas. Taste is much the same with a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is drinkable but the flavors seem muddled and not all that exciting.

On tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach on 6/28/11.

A - Clear copper/orange body with a paper thin white head that reduced to a swirly retention and bubbly lacing.

S - Light leafy and citrus hop notes with a mild dankness paired with a sweet caramel malt base and some lightly toasted grainy notes.

T - Leafy hop character with a hint of earthiness in the backend. Malt character is sweet with hints of light toasted grains and caramel. Finishes with a splash of citrus hop bitterness.

M - Medium bodied with an oily texture and mild carbonation. Finishes with subtle bitterness on the palate.

D - Solid pale ale with a slight weed-like quality, hence the beer's moniker.
