On Tap

Pizza Port
Carlsbad, CA

A clear orange and amber with a moderately sized off-white head that that leaves regular, circular rings of lacing down the glass.

The aroma is a pleasant and hoppy one, especially for a pale ale. There's lots of citrus (grapefruit) and pine elements along with some bread and sweetness.

Moderately bitter, citrus hop presence, mild pine, and some cracker malt. A very well constructed, balanced, drinkable pale ale.

Medium bodied with moderate to high carbonation.

A great pale ale. I could always drink this with pizza.

One of my favorite styles from a brewery that makes great beers. Happy to get to try this one.

A - Golden yellow colored beer, foamy head, decent retention and some fine lace and spots left on the sides. Sign of a good APA always seems to be how much stick there is.

S - Floral and citrus hop smell with grapefruit. Some sweet, pale malts but the hops are the focus.

T - Pretty spot on with a pale malt backbone and some nice floral and citrus hops. There is some nice resiny bitterness on the end, but it's light enough that you would like it even if you weren't a hophead.

M - Crisp, lighter bodied, clean finish.

O - Highly sessionable APA that I'm more than happy to drink. Not world class, but no complaints.

On tap at Port Carlsbad good I brought a growler home.

A: A fizzy yellow beer. Literally pours a crystal clear straw yellow pale with a fluffy 2 finger cloud of the pure white stuff on top. Some nice lacey lace.

S: Bright with fruity floral hop aromas. Pineapple and candied citrus. With a tangy fruit yeast component.

T: Lighter than light and super hoppy. Pineapple mango spiciness. Well bittered, nice pucker. How this differs from an IPA I have no idea. Maybe the real lack of malt used here. Virtually non existent -just some sugary breadcrumbs. Tasty tasty!

M: Super light body that finishes dry and very crisp.

D: I could and did drink this brew all day long. A super light and refreshing pale that is uber-hopped yet remarkably balanced. Like a lighter version of Poor Man's. Makes for a great beach or lawnmower brew. I think the sign said 6.8% ABV but it's not even detectable if so.

Steadily becoming my favorite style. A simple straight forward hop delivery mechanism with great sessionability. So nice and refreshing.
Got to love the Port!

On-tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad

Pours a clear golden color with a white head and good lacing. Citrus peel, grass, and pine hops with a light floral character. Some bready malt, but note much in the way of sweetness. The pine is quite strong on the palate and gives the beer a pronounced bitterness. Bready malt, but again, not much sweetness. A bit of floral and citrus peel hop flavor to it as well.

On tap at PP Carlsbad

My pint arrived with an inch of dense white foam atop the crystal clear golden hued beer. Head recedes as I drink leaving some decent lacing. The nose is citrus hops. Orange and tangerine predominate. Taste follows the nose with big citrus notes. Orange, tangerine and mango are showcased. Malt is almost completely absent, as is any trace of alcohol. I don't notice any pine either, just bitter citrus rind. Very nice! Mouthfeel tends toward lhe lighter side and the abundant carbonation suits this refreshing brew perfectly. Finish is dry and bitter. Overall this is an insanely drinkable, overly hoppy, very refreshing APA. Perfect for a warm San Diego afternoon. Recommended!

Growler shared at Big Brew Day by a gentleman from Pizza Port Carlsbad, thanks!

A: Vibrant and transparent yellow gold with a massive two inches of white froth in the snifter. Excellent retention and lots of lacing.

S: Lots of orange, tangerine, and apricot flesh. Malt is absent. The hop profile is vibrant and aromatic. No alcohol is evident.

T: Moderately bitter, with a little crackery malt. Hops impart notes of orange, apricot, tangerine, and a dash of apricot. The hops are bright and expressive. No booze or harshness.

M: Upper light in body with upper moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is dry, sticky, and crisp.

Overall: A delicious and refreshing hoppy pale ale. I ended up drinking 3 pints of this at Pizza Port Carlsbad later that night.

On tap at Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA.

Pours a clear yellow with a foamy bone colored head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. A foamy latticework of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, tropical fruit, and malt. Taste is much the same with medium hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is really tasty and very drinkable.

Chilled growler into a glass, courtesy of Sideswipe. Thanks, John!

Shared with the late chswimmer (RIP). From notes.

A: Pours a clear orange-amber body with an off-white head. Great retention with sticky lace down the sides.

S: Bright, grapefruit citrus with an element of tangerine. A touch of pine.

T: Lightly bitter up front, but that fades toward the clean finish. Cracker malt with citrus hops and just a touch of pine (the latter more noticeable toward the end of the taste).

M: Light-bodied, with good carbonation. It finishes dry with no lingering bitterness.

O: As with almost everything else I've had from Pizza Port, this was good. Hard to go wrong with PP...

Big thanks to Ryan from Pizza Port for sharing this at Big Brew Day!

A- Light yellow, brilliantly clear. Nice white fluffy head that lingered for a while.

S - Hop forward with lots of resiny, citrus characteristics.

T - Awesome! Light, crispy, fresh. Tons of hop flavor going on. Everything you'd want in an IPA, but with a smaller body and lower alcohol. (Just how I like my APAs!)

M - light bidy, yet crisp, refreshing.

O- fantastic quaffable beer. Glad I was thee first to review this! Arthur P. and Hophead84 were here for the tasting & brew day. Always great to share beers with them!

On-tap @ Haymarket for the Pizza Port Takeover.

A - Pours a clear golden yellow, nice lacing, whisps on top.

S - Light hops, floral notes, slight citrus.

T - Floral, citrus, medium hoppy bitterness. Very light hops and pretty straight-forward here, no surprises.

M - Light body, crisp, smooth, refreshing, good carbonatoin.

O - A good APA, but nothing more. Hoppy Birthday and Parking Violation destroy this one.

On-tap at Haymarket thanks to Jeff Bagby and company. Served in a 4oz taster stange. I think the menu said it was 6.8% or so?

A - Transparent golden body, with a finger of white foam that settles to a thin cap, leaving behind spotty lace. Looks like an American Pale Ale all right.

S - Lemon, grapefruit, orange zest, pine, and a touch of earthiness as well. Malt character is minimal and provides faint sweetness.

T - Taste is mostly grapefruit zest and light pithy orange. There's some crackery malt in the background, and medium residual bitterness.

M - Zesty active carbonation, medium-light body. Super dry, with tons of residual resinous hop oils. No appreciable alcohol.

D - Another fine hoppy brew from Pizza Port. I wish I would have been allowed to order this by the pint instead of by the taster, but I understand Haymarket's goal of ensuring as many people got to try these beers - in any case it's the type of beer that screams for a few pints over the course of an evening. Not as sublime as Hoppy Birthday, but still quite good.
