On Tap

Lost Abbey
San Marcos, CA

Clear orange and amber with a moderate, persistent white head. Lots of lacing left down the glass.

Well balanced aroma though the local hops really shine. They offer wonderful citrus bursts of orange, pineapple, and grapefruit along with the scent of fresh cut flower stems.

Moderate bitterness but plenty of citrus (orange and grapefruit) and floral hop flavors, balanced nicely with a bready and caramel malt backbone.

Medium to full bodied, though incredibly drinkable.

A delicious, hoppy, incredibly drinkable pale ale. This was my favorite from Randy's Birthday/80's Dance Party Extravaganza!

On tap at Lost Abbey. One of the few beers they had at the brewery that wasn't available at any Bevmo. Nice golden color, mild thin white head, spotty lace that doesn't do much beyond go away in a haste manner. Impressive clarity for a beer that is homegrown estate hops though. Aroma, didn't impart much aromawise, bitterness and that was about it.

Taste, hoppy, but they don't impart much flavor. Just not getting the tropical fruit or citrus out of this one, and it was my first beer of the day. Cracker like malt presence, this is kind of reminiscient of the single hop Nugget homebrews I've had in Nevada. Good, but far from mindblowing, and the one note pony starts to wear tiresome by the end of the beer. Solid, but nothing worth going out of your way for.

At tap at Lost Abbey. Reviewed from notes.

A; Pours a clear light orange with some amber under an smallish off-white head which leaves some spotty lace.

N: Prominant dank and weedy, grapefruit citrus, some faint malt sweetness.

T: Juicy and wet citrus fruits followed by sticky resiny dank weed.

M: Medium body and carbonation. Mildly dry and bitter finish.

O: Freshy freshness really shines here. Nice seasonal harvest offering.

On tap at the Brewery - aka "Fallbrook Homegrown"
Notes from 09/23/11
*served in a pint glass

A: Pours a deep caramel amber color with a thin khaki tan head that bubbled out rather quick. Some fake out lacing disappears with each sip.

S: Nose is soft with some pale malts and some light citrus and pine notes. Nothing crazy.

T: Contrary to the nose this is nicely hopped in flavor overall. There is a bit of bready pretzel dough malt backing. But hops are resiny citrus and piney goodness. Touch of spice that hits the back of the throat. Really fresh hop flavors. So balanced and refreshing.

M: Light creamy texture with a bit of resiny slick mouthcoat. Nice med carbonation.

D: A really well balanced Pale and probably one of the best I have had in a while. Not just being a Homer. Really enjoyable. Could use a bit more aroma action but smooth flavor. Nice hop presence. Easy drinker.

Hells yeah I love me some homegrowns.

Golden color, minimal white head, substantial clarity. Aroma was a little bit of bitter c hops.

Taste was hoppy, but this is a milder pale ale from PP. Dry, light malt, bitter hops. Grapefruit. Better options for pale ales when at PP.

On-tap at Lost Abbey

A: The beer pours amber in color with a fluffy, off-white head.

S: Sweet bread is the first thing I pick up. For a "hoppy beer," it's not super pungent. The hops are a bit more subtle with lots of floral hop aromas and light pine and grass notes. A mild toffee sweetness.

T: The flavor starts off with a light sweetness of toffe and bread. As with the aroma, lots of floral hops, with mild grass and pine. Slightly bitter, bit well balanced.

M: The body is medium with medium carbonation.

O: While maybe not as in your face hoppy as some other beers, this was very nice with lots of enjoyable subtleties.

On tap at the brewery

A- Deep orange/amber color with two fingers of off-white foam. Great lacing.

S- Citrus hops and pale malt. The usual suspects, orange, grapefruit, mango.

T- Bitter citrus rind. Lots of grapefruit and orange characteristics. Backed up by a nice sugar cookie malt presence mid-palate. Bitter hops accentuate the semi-sweet finish and there is a nice, lingering bitter aftertaste.

M- Feel is medium bordering on sticky with a nice effervescent level of carbonation.

O- This is a very nice hoppy pale ale. The low ABV makes this refreshing beer extremely sessionable. I Iike fact that the hops are locally grown. Well done Port! Recommended!

"A pale ale made entirely with hops grown right here in Northern San Diego County. After the hops were picked and delivered to the brewery, a number of folks showed up to volunteer to pick the fresh hop cones from the vines by hand."

On tap at Lost Abbey.

A: Slightly hazy dark orange with a big frothy white head.

S: Pronounced orange and grapefruit flesh with perfumy pine and floral notes. Tropical notes waft from the glass, reminiscent of pineapple, mango, and passionfruit. Outstanding.

T: Faintly sweet orange with lots of pith and grapefruit rind. There's a good amount of pine as well. Alcohol is noticeable. Lightly sweet, with midpalate tropical notes. Malt is crackery with biscuit and bread.

M: Medium body with upper moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is sticky and dry.

Overall: Damn good stuff. Surprising amount of tropical notes from this wild Fallbrook hop strain. Highly drinkable.

On tap at The Lost Abbey/Port tasting room in San Marcos, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus zest, and some floral and perfume-like hop aroms. Taste is much the same with a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Growler fresh from the source, labeled "Fallbrook Homegrown", thanks Kevin!

Pours hazy amber with a quarter-inch head and a partial skim coat througout the glass and some light lacing.

Aromatics lead off with a midly dank and citrus-laden hop profile. Plump malt drizzeled with honey lends a balanced base and some tropical fruit follows through.

Medium bodied with a crispish mouthfeel.

Juicy malt and resinous hops start the palate. Traces of mango, tangerine, and grapefruit follow through.

Finishes with a solid bitterness, doughy malt, and tropical fruit.

A tasty pale ale for sure. The wet-hop dank-greeness is present and the beer is highly drinkable. Hopefully next year there will be more hops available for an IPA!
