Pizza Port

A very sticky, dark burnt orange IPA. Persistent off-white head. Lots of previously mentioned stick all the way down the glass. Very pretty. This is what I think of when I think of a Pizza Port IPA. Gorgeous.

Aroma of citrus, pine, and resin. Dank. Strong, expressive, appropriate, and lovely.

The flavor follows the aroma: tons of pine, resin, citrus zest, and lots of bitterness. A big, bold, expressive, bitter beer that pairs well with salty, cruncy, savory pizza.

Medium bodied with moderate, nearly high, carbonation.

Fantastic. I love Pizza Port IPAs.

Very flat flavor profile. Call it cardboard with hop extract-- the blotter acid of the brew pub. Clear, light golden amber in the glass.

Surprisingly light body. Sharp and harsh. No apparent hint of malt. Watery and totally bitter. Just a slight aroma emerges with some flowery notes. Some resins in the taste, but mostly just a medicinal burning bitterness. Way beyond grapefruit peel. It's not an IPA, it's a chemical reaction. Totally undrinkable, to my taste, but tougher hop fanatics may rise to the challenge.

On tap at Pizza Port in Ocean Beach.

Started the review from a draft pour at Pizza Port Ocean Beach but did most of it from a growler I opened tonight. So, I guess this will be a growler review.

A: Bright and vibrant pellucid yellow gold with an infinite number of tiny bubbles climbing skyward to feed two fingers of white sea foam. I watch the head slowly recede over the course of 20 minutes as I enjoy my serving of Foam Ball. Lacing is everywhere.

S: Fresh tangerine and orange notes with a deep cavern of pine resin and a forest weed. Zesty lemon emanates from the glass. Juicy grapefruit and tangerine aromatics linger in the air. As the beer warms up tropical notes become perceivable: passionfruit, mango, and pineapple. The growler is definitely more expressive in the fruit department than the draft pour I had earlier today. There's a light floral presence that lends a restrained spicy characteristic. The aroma is very good.

T: Incredibly weedy, dank, and resinous in the flavor with lesser notes of orange and grapefruit. Malt is faint and crackery. There's a little more citrus on the back end with guava and a slight herbal flair. There's an upper moderate dry bitterness throughout. Definitely more dank and pine heavy than the aroma, but there's still a pleasing citrus presence. The finish is a little astringent.

M: Lower medium body with lower high carbonation. The mouthfeel is crisp, dry, and sticky.

Overall: Very good overall, though I prefer the more citrus-forward aroma than the dank and resinous flavor. Also, it's pretty dry and bitter so I'm not sure if my palate will be up to the challenge this 64oz growler presents. We shall see.

Beautiful murky and deep golden orange with a half finger lingering head. A sweet citrus dominated by blood orange and a nice hop bite. Slightly maltier than my preference with the weight and mouthfeel of an imperial. Excellent with some light San Diego pizza.
