On Tap – Port Carlsbad
01/12/13
A: Pours a coppery amber-orange hue with nice clarity and a thin rim of paper white foam that swivels out to a collar in just a few moments. Plenty of bubbly action and some nice tracks of sticky cling with each progression.
S: A real dank herbal weedy aroma with a caramel sweet pale malt backing and hints of loafy bread. There is a nice combination of evergreens, citrus peel, and juicy stone fruit to the beer with some light alcohol spice noted. The nose takes a surprising twist of tropical flora in the end. Solid aroma and quite danky.
T: Flavors affirm the danky herbal nose with some ripe orchard fruit, pines, and a bit of restrained citrus/tangerine peel. Sweet Mary Jane. This one is a bit heavier on the Crystal malts than the typical Port IPA’s. Has a more profound caramel sweetness to it with some crusty breads mixed in. Interesting exotic floral accent in there not much unlike some hibiscus. There is a high level of hop bitterness to the overall beer that just saps the palate. Alcohol is present but well integrated with the other flavors. A nice dank and hoppy IPA that comes off just a tad heavier than some of the other Port offerings.
M: Smooth and creamy mouthfeel with a moderate weight in body and some light alcohol warmth. There is a highly constricting bitterness to the beer yet it’s not nearly as resinous as one would expect. Finish is clean but a bit on the wetter side.
D: First time trying this one out and it is tasty. Another nice dank hoppy offering from Port Carlsbad but I would say far from their best work. Solid hop assault only a bit thicker with the caramel malts.

Poured from a growler into a tulip glass.
A: Clear, light amber color with one finger of diminishing off-white foam head. Moderate lacing remains on the glass.
S: Coniferous foliage and chile fruit represent the contribution of hops, while a fine thread of malt is refined and doughy.
T: Begins barely off-dry, with pine and even stronger canteloupe hop aromatics. Acidity is restrained into the middle where emerging crystal malt takes the existing hop-derived flavors and turns them zesty. A flash of minerality predates the finish where strong, lasting bitterness reigns without much in the way of accessory flavors. A hint of booziness can be detected nearly throughout the flavor profile.
M: Medium viscosity, very creamy on the palate, with moderate carbonation.
D/O: This IPA exhibits a host of clean sensory attributes that make it refreshing at times, even if the full spectrum of West Coast qualities are lacking. Definite citrus qualities are not to be found here, but it is buoyed by its other pleasurable flavors and smells. On the other hand, bitterness is intense at the end while alcohol is too present for the style. It is texturally brilliant, with a creamy presence that cannot be denied and adds a sense of maturity to the overall profile.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. The sign on the board had what appeared to be Han Solo in lederhosen and holding a stein. Orange color, good head, sticky lacing on the sides of the glass. Smell was nice and hoppy, pretty much west coast style, citrus and pine. Flavor was very bitter, dank hops. This was a nice west coast style IPA and one I would order again on sight. Alas, I won't be back to Pizza Port for awhile so I probably won't get that chance soon.

On tap at Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA.
Pours a clear orange with a foamy biege head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, and some tropical fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with a malt finish. There is a medium hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is really tasty and easy to drink.

On-tap at Carlsbad
Pours an amber/orange color with a white head. Citrus peel dominates the aroma. Lots of grapefruit and tangerine peel, some hints of pineapple, and a light pine note. Some toffee sweetness and a fair amount of bread. The flavor is mildly bitter with some pine notes as well as citrus peel. Good grapefruit and tangerine flavor, mild pefrume/floral character, and some light malt sweetness.

Chilled growler into a glass, courtesy of Sideswipe. Thanks, John!
A: Pours a clear, copper-amber body with two-fingers of off-white head. The beer retains well and leaves nice sudsing down the glass.
S: This is on the bitter citrusy side: more rind than flesh of orange, tangelo, and grapefruit. Mild pale malt backing.
T: As the nose suggests, this has a moderate bitterness that slightly overpowers the pale, biscuity malt backbone. It's pure citrus, with the rind qualities of grapefruit and orange carrying the beer. Quite tasty.
M: Great mouthfeel. This has the right amount of bitterness without being too oily. The beer doesn't linger; it cleans up well after itself and manages to leave the palate quite fresh. I drank 3 glasses of this with ease.
O: I shared this with Nanoslug and mentioned that the beer was brewed for the brewpub's Star Wars beerfest and presumably had origins in a Star Wars reference. Neither of us could place it; I only remember the good movies in the series, and they remember the old ones. Mystifying. I'd love to know what the name is referring to.

Served in a pint glass. Deep amber color with a finger of pure white foam. The head dissipates to a thick coaster which hangs around for the entire experience. Great lacing. The nose is pale malt and citrus. Taste starts out with bitter orange rind. Initial bitterness is tempered by a nice biscuity malt profile which gives way to huge grapefruit notes towards the end. The finish is dry with lingering grapefruit bitterness. Very nice. Feel is medium with a lively level of carbonation, which works quite well here. Overall a tasty, refreshing IPA from Pizza Port (no surprise here). Recommended.
