This beer is a very dark brown, not massively thick but too dark to show through, with a small tan head that holds up reasonably well and drops mostly spotting on the glass below a ring at top.
This beer has massive depth, character and complexity all over the place, masterfully blended without losing anything. All over this beer is lots of wood, even some soft bark in there, plenty of smoked caramel and vanilla. Creamy dark chocolate and milk chocolate mingle in there as well, a bit of cocoa powder dryness evening the sweetness out. Alcohol adds a warmth and a little kick without going too astringent with overbearing ethanol punch. Brown sugar sweetness comes in and mingles with the lightly smoky notes. This beer seems to move in phases and develop layers, almost dancing on the tongue.
Dryness and sweetness mingle for an overall semi-dry effect on the palate, mixing creamy with powdery without clashing. It's full-bodied without exactly being thick, and it has lots of richness, keeping both crisp and smooth from start to finish.

Side-by-side with the buffalo trace version.
Pours very dark for the style - black with ruby tinge. More like a black barleywine.
Fantastic, very rich. Much more of a sweet whiskey overall than the BT. Bright caramel, sweet toffee, bourbon soaked oaky vanilla, raw oak, some spice. Dark fruits, chocolate and barrel char. Has some tobacco pipe smoke as well. Taste's very rich with a long finish. Full mouthfeel.
Both variants are great, I do prefer this one with a richer bourbon character, but I also prefer ER to BT in general. Fantastic beer - more like a barleywine than a wee heavy.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.
Appearance - Murky deep brown. Thin collar. Pond watery. No real head.
Smell - Great bourbon barrel character. Lots of oak and vanilla. Caramel malt. Brown sugar. Nice.
Taste - Doesn't really live up to the smell, but it's good. Rich caramel. Bourbon. Oak. Some buttery flavors. Brown sugar. Slightly bitter finish.
Mouthfeel - Heavy. Medium low carbonation. Boozy.
Overall - Very tasty, even if it doesn't live up to the smell.

On tap at Voodoo Homestead in Homestead, PA.
Pours a rich dark brown, with a small fizzy head, and not much lacing.
Smells really f'in awesome- some caramel, smoke, chocolate, roasted malt, leather, tobacco, and toffee.
This is a really unique wee heavy and I love it. There's a lot more chocolate and roastiness here. It seems of this character comes from the barrels themselves- I get a dark, bitter charred character, but the chocolate flavors are unexpected and really nice. It feels a bit more like a barleywine, or even a stout, than a wee heavy, but it also sort of just defies conventions, which is just fine. There's some leather, tobacco, toffee, and caramel too, with some oak and vanilla. The alcohol is not present, at all. It's either really well-crafted in that way, or the aging has mellowed this out.
This is pretty thick bodied, with a rich, slightly creamy mouthfeel, and a lower level of carbonation. It's really drinkable.
Another winner- might be the best scotch ale/wee heavy I've ever had.
